I, as well, am anxiously awaiting the end of this season. I wonder if Chron went with the same theme.

I'm hoping she goes with horror myself. I'm just getting a bit anxious for the HHN website to update. Hopefully it'll happen sooner rather than later.

Tin Pan Alley Theme

TIN PAN ALLEY
Where the songs and sounds of movies come to life
In the early part of the 20th century songwriters flocked to New York City in an attempt to write the next big smash hit song. Inspired by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, hundreds flocked to West 28th street between 5th and 6th ave (home to many of the music publishers of the time). With all of those musicians working day and night all at once, it sounded as if someone was throwing pots and pans around, and thus was born the nickname, Tin Pan Alley.

Many of those songwriters didn’t stay in New York though. After achieving success on the stage these legendary tunesmiths were transported by major movie studios out to California where they were put hard to work breathing magic into all of the wonderful movie musicals we know and love.

Now considered a part of the Flatiron district, Tin Pan Alley no longer exists as it once did in NYC, nor does it carry on in CA. But, for us at least, it can always live on in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where anything can happen and you might make your way to Tin Pan Alley just in time to hear one of your old favorites, or perhaps be the first to discover that brilliant young voice of tomorrow.

Street Performers
Whilst walking down the alley, be sure to look for Buddy Tremelo “Songwriter Extraordinaire.” Buddy has made his way to Tin Pan Alley with just a few dollars, a guitar and a song in his heart. Buddy came to the studios in an attempt to get rich by writing a song that will be featured in a movie, any movie. He has written lyrics to some of our favorite classic movie themes, and even has some own compositions written to improve the classics. Buddy has also been known to write songs on the spot for the folks he encounters.

Logistics of Adding to Area
Adding two new attractions, a shop, and a restaurant to the area might increase dramatically the guests in the streets and walkways. To alleviate this, all of the cues are housed inside of behind the rides, and should help alleviate any traffic problems. Also, by adding the walkway through the Symphonies building, guests will now be able to get in and out of the area via two routes, thus allowing for better flow in the Tin Pan Alley district.

Marvelous Manic Metronome
A Swinging Good Time

Goal: Add another attraction that will appeal to the more thrill seeking guests to Hollywood Studios.

picture.php

Story When guests ask cast members or go on tours, this is the story told about the metronome.

One often wonders where all of the money spent on movies goes. The story of the Marvelous Manic Metronome is an insight into that world of Hollywood extravagance and spending. Whilst working on his 1952 Academy Award winning classic drama All the Notes Were Flatted, Cecil B. Otto Von Warnerfox, that world famous director, commissioned a rather large metronome for the movie’s scene depicting the main character’s (Annabella Fermata) fall into madness after losing the first violin chair to her long time rival and now lover (Ramon Dequatrain).

Mr. Von Warnerfox, known for his hands on approach and quick temper, had designed a working metronome to stand a whopping 150 inches above the actress, showing symbolically how music had become the most dominating force in her life. When the technicians approached old Cecil B. Otto about his design plans and the concerns they had, he replied, “I don’t give a darn how long it takes, how much it costs, or whatever other excuses you give me, I designed the thing, I know it’ll work, so just build it!” Unfortunately the otherwise immaculate design contained one very tiny flaw that had gone overlooked by the director. The plans called for a height or 150’ not 150’’ and thus was created the largest and most expensive set piece ever constructed for a movie (of that time).

In an effort to recoup some of the expense on the movie, the studios decided to fit a few seats onto the metronome and allow guests to ride on this legendary set piece.

Description: Basically, take a metronome, and imagine if you could ride on the slider that determines tempo. The higher up you go the slower the ride, but the more extreme your drops would be. The lower down you go, the tempo of the rocking would get faster and faster, even though you wouldn’t be going as far back and forth. The Marvelous Manic Metronome is a complex ride that combines elements of a drop tower, a pendulum rocker, and swivel seats to achieve create a new ride experience that puts the rider in the perspective of “riding a metronome.” As the ride operates a random selection of movie music will play in time with the ride’s movements.

Ride Building: The entire ride building and ride itself look like an incredibly large metronome facing the street with pendulums on both the front and back. The front of the ride building is right on the street, to the right of Rock N Rollercoaster (if you’re standing in front looking at the entrance to RNR). There are two tunnels on the front of the building, one serves as an entrance, one as an exit. As guests walk through the entrance tunnel, they actually walk underneath the entire ride and then arrive at the cue, which is located behind the building. Inside the entrance tunnel are movie posters for the movies whose soundtracks are featured in the ride. The building itself is surrounded by gardens featuring topiaries in the shape of various musical instruments on one side and musical notation on the other.
picture.php

picture.php

Ride Experience: Guests enter the ride vehicle through a door in the back of the vehicle and are strapped in with an over the shoulder seat belt and a pull down lap bar. Four guests may ride on each vehicle, which is similar to a Tilt-A-Whirl car, only with the addition of upper body restraints.

picture.php

After the safety precautions and spiel, the guests here a Tapping of a baton on a podium, and then the sound of instruments warming up. During this the ride vehicle will rise up and down on the metronome (depending on the sequence that is chosen) until finally settling in on the spot where the sequence begins. After the vehicle stops and the warming up has ceased, a song will begin. This will be some instrumental version of a theme from one of ten different movies. The metronome’s movements will be different for each song selection, some will start up high/slow, some will start fast/low, but all will go through the full range of motions capable. Basically, the higher up the metronome, the slower the movement, but the more extreme the swaying back and forth and the closer to the ground the vehicle gets. (Think “The Imperial March”) Faster music will cause the vehicle to go back and forth more quickly, but not as far or as close to the ground. (Think theme from Indiana Jones) Of course, during the course of the ride, tempos will change and the Metronome will shift accordingly.
Within the larger ride vehicle each individual seat or car is on a pivot point and can swivel 180 degrees. Sometimes you may be facing straight up, sometimes straight down. This gives the ride a true sense of randomness as you are now going up and down, side to side, and around in semi circles.
As the ride comes to an end guests will depart through the back of the vehicle (once it has come to a full and completed stop) and exit to the right, down the stairs and through the tunnel back into Tin Pan Alley.

Songs The following 10 tracks are used in random rotation on the ride. Each one is a new recording featuring tempo alterations and variations to allow the ride to take guests through the range of motions. Guests may wish to ride this over and over again to try and experience all of the different songs.

The Imperial March- Star Wars
The Bare Necessities-Jungle Book
Indiana Jones Theme
Superman Theme
Singing in the Rain
Off to See the Wizard- The Wizard of Oz
Prince Ali- Aladin
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- Mary Poppins

There will also be a rare track that only plays once per hour- The Mickey Mouse Club Theme.
During holidays and themed events, songs pertaining to the theme will be played instead of the usual rotation.

Capacity and Logistics
The ride can seat a total of 4 people per individual car; there are 15 cars per larger vehicle, for a total of 60 passengers per ride sequence. The turnover rate should be approximately 5 minutes including loading, ride time, and unloading, for a total of 12 rides per hours or a max capacity of 720 guests per side per hour. When both sides are fully operational at peak seasons, the capacity is 1440 per hour which makes this an average capacity ride.

Silly Symphonies Pavilion
Connecting Animation and Music

The rather large building in the corner of Tin Pan Alley houses the Silly Symphonies Pavilion. Inside guests can take a tour through exhibits showcasing some of our favorite cartoons of all time, or board a Xyloboat and take a journey to Musicland. Guests may also use this building as a back entrance into the Art of Animation building.

Goal Create a large indoor area at Hollywood Studios, allowing guests to escape the heat. Create a new pathway linking Tin Pan Alley and Animation Courtyard. Pay homage to Disney's first big foray into the movies, animated shorts.
The Building
The front of the building is evocative of the Animation Studio in California with the Seven Dwarves serving as columns, but in this case it is characters from the Silly Symphonies holding up the building; The Male Tree from Flowers and Trees, The Saxophone King from Musicland, the Fiddler Pig from Three Little Pigs, and one of the dancing skeletons from The Skeleton Dance.

Silly Symphonies
The building contains a long hallway that wraps around the perimeter of the dark ride. In that hallway are galleries of the various Silly Symphonies that we all know and love. Items from the archives will be brought in from time to time and put on display for all to see and enjoy. This hallway will also connect to the Animation building and allow guests an alternate route for traveling the park.

The Disney Classics Theater
There is also a movie theater located at the place where the two building meet. This theater shows a loop of the most popular Silly Symphonies with an emphasis on the shorts that showcase music and/or animation breakthroughs. It is similar to the one on Main Street, only slightly larger and with a décor evocative of the 1930’s.

Musicland

Ride Summary
Guests will board a boat and take a journey through one of the most beloved cartoons of all time Musicland. Guests will see the cartoon unfold around them and find themselves caught in the middle of the battle between the two neighboring kingdoms, the Isle of Jazz and the Land of Symphony.

Vehicle
This ride will be a water boat ride similar to Small World of Pirates of the Carribean.
The boats for the ride will be very similar to those used on Pirates of the Caribbean with a few minor changes. The front and back will have what appears to be a Xylophone attached, making the boat appear to be a much larger version of the Xylophone used by the prince in the cartoon. Also, these boats will have a special locking mechanism on the bottom that will allow them to make use of the “crashing wave” effect in the big battle scene. Cast members will refer to the boats as Xylo-Boats.
picture.php

Special Effects
This ride will make extensive use of the mist screen technology, improved audio animatronics, and a new ride mechanic called “crashing wave” technology.

Crashing wave technology will allow the boat to be lifted out of the water and then crash back down again without the need for lift hills. This will work by locking the boat into a platform and using hydraulics to lift the vehicle out of the water and then back down again in a fluid forward motion. This will have a similar feeling for the guests of having gone up and down a lift and drop only slightly faster. This will allow for guests to feel as if they are being rocked up and down by waves.

Before Reading this Description, I encourage you to visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBKmkbRLXGM
And familiarize yourself with the cartoon as constantly inserting links for photo references will be inefficient. The numbers in the description sync with the points marked on my interior building diagram.

Silly Symphonies Opening- 1. As the boat rounds the corner, we go through a series of mist screens in front of us, showing the Silly Symphonies opening credits. We then see the title card “Musicland.” And finally a mist screen 2. with the Map of the isles from the opening.

3. We are introduced to the Land of Symphony; we ride through the ballroom where instruments are dancing to the Minuet in G on either side of us with the Queen herself directly in front, sleeping on the throne. All of the characters are AA’s. We turn before we hit the queen and follow the Princess. She exits up above us, and we exit through a doorway in the ballroom, 4. once outside the palace we see the Princess looking over at the Isle of Jazz and waving her hand.

Across from the Princess is a Projection of the Isle of Jazz, a hoping place that produces some lively music which begins to drown out the Minuet as we get closer and closer. Upon turning the corner, we are now in the throne room of the Saxophone king, 5. and we can see instruments jazzing it up on either side of the boat. We see that here, the Prince is about to fall asleep on the throne. We exit the throne room much like we did the previous time, this time following the prince. 6.

The Prince spying the Princess is the last thing we see as we turn the corner and find ourselves traveling alongside the prince 7. who is rowing towards the princess on the other isle. We turn another corner to see a scene of the Princess and Prince holding hands and making music together, 8. much like the cartoon.
We turn the corner to see the Queen and her guard arresting the Prince 9. and marching him off towards the Metronome Jail.

We now turn into two big scenes, one is of the King Preparing his troops for war , and the other is of the Queen readying her army.
In the scene with the king we turn to the left and see all of the horns rising into view and king marching out to conduct them. As the horns start to play, we feel blasts of air coming from them.10.

The next scene is the Queens castle and the organ that converts into a cannon, the same blasts of air blow through in time with the music.11.

We turn one more corner and enter the centerpiece of the attraction, the battle scene. 12. This is a huge room (think the opening of Pirates) and we can see the two Islands on either side. Caught in the middle are the guests and the Prince and Princess. Blasts of air, splashes in the water, and all sorts of lighting effects are going on around us, but the big attraction is the “crashing wave” technology. This will allow the boat that the guests are riding on to surge up and then crash back down similar to the boat in the movie.

We near the end of the battle scene and see a mist screen in front of us depicting the scene in which the King and Queen are each trying to rescue their child. 13. They seem to reconcile as the screen gives way to…

The big finale, 14. both islands playing music together from across both sides of the room, with a bridge of harmony in the center, on which the King & Queen, Prince & Princess are all seen holding hands.

We float under the bridge and into the tunnel for the disembarking cue. The wall shows the credits as we prepare to exit the ride.

Joey’s
Fine Dining, Entertainment, and a touch of Showbiz

Goal When looking at dining options around the World, one notices a series of trends. The table options at the Magic Kingdom tend to focus on characters, at Epcot they represent cuisines from around the world, at Animal Kingdom unique and unusual flavors are on display. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it seems that environment, and recreating a specific atmosphere are front and center in the design of restaurants. The Brown Derby recreates the elegance of dining with celebrities, The Sci-Fi drive in showcases an era where eating in your car and watching campy films was a good way to spend a Friday night, the 50’s prime time café takes us back to the golden age of TV and the nuclear family.

I personally long for more evening entertainment options like the Hoopdeedoo or Spirit of Aloha, and miss The Adventurer's Club dearly. This is my attempt to capture that type of experience.

Joey’s will take guests back to the days of dinner clubs, where a delicious meal and an evening of entertainment were part of the same package. Inspired by the movie musical Pal Joey, this Signature restaurant will provide guests with a unique experience and a delicious menu.

Story
Joey Evans, famed song and dance man, has finally found his home. His wish of owning a club has finally come true, right here on Tin Pan Alley. Joey left San Francisco, after unsuccessfully trying to open a club out there, and headed around the country on tour. Traveling from city to city, Joey was unable to find a suitable location for his dream club, until he landed at the Hollywood Studios. Joey had been hired to play a minor role in Cecil B Otto Von Warnerfox’s The Notes Were All Flated. Mr. Von Warnerfox liked Joey so much that he agreed to help bankroll his club, provided a table were left open for the director at all times, should he choose to stop in and view the show. In fact to this day only a select few have ever been able to dine at “The Directors Table” and if you see someone sitting there, you know that they must be very well connected in “The Biz.”

Here is a clip from Pal Joey, giving you an indication of the spirit I'm going for.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-chWouJQflw

Location Located on the corners of Sunset Blvd and Tin Pan Alley, Joey’s features the perfect blending of East and West coast. Music from the greats who wrote for stage and screen, Gershwin, Porter, Moss, Hart, Rodgers, and Berlin are all featured in the floor show done at every dinner seating. Joey’s location makes it a prime destination for those seeking a pre or post Fantasmic meal.

That scene from White Christmas should give you an idea of what the room would look like.

Menu The menu will be classic high-end faire. Steaks, Chops, and Seafood.

Drinks
While Joey’s has a full service bar featuring several draft beers and soft drinks, the ________ tail take center stage here. Manhattan’s, Vodka Stingers, Martini’s and a variety of other drinks are featured in a little black book kept on the table that describes each of the drinks with suggestions for what type of drink to order based on personality and situation.

Appetizers/Salads
Joey’s Salad- crisp romaine lettuce with ranch dressing, cucumbers, tomato, and crumbled blue cheese
Fresh Spinach Salad-goat cheese, Granny Smith apples, balsamic dressing and pine nuts

Red Velvet Cake-A rich chocolaty cake with cream cheese icing

The Show
Dinner seatings are for an hour and a half, waiters take the order upon guests being seated. Most nights will feature three seatings, at 5:00, 6:45, and 8:30. On evenings when Fantasmic is showing, there will be a special adults only seating, post Fantasmic. The only thing “adult” about this performance will be the bawdiness of the humor and the song selection (think the late shows at the Adventurer’s Club).

Drinks and appetizers are delivered to the table during the first set in the show, entrée’s during the first break, and desserts during the last break.

The show itself consists of a host (Joey) who performs big band standards (think music made famous by Frank Sinatra) with a group of women backing him up and a live band. Dance routines, specialty numbers, and group numbers mix with solo’s to make for an entertaining tour through the American Songbook. Songs include, The Lady is a Tramp, Someone to Watch Over Me, Sisters, Me and My Shadow, and the big finale That’s Entertainment. Between songs, Joey interacts with the audience and tells jokes, all with a rather roguish demeanor.

Lunch
During the afternoon the club is open for families between the hours of 11-4. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, and lighter fare. During the lunch service, guests will be able to see a stage show that runs every hour on the hour. The show lasts about 40 minutes and features songs from famous movie musicals. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, We Go Together, Bye Bye Birdie, A Whole New World, and various others which will change depending on the cast that day.

Maestro Mickey’s Music and More
Your one stop shop from Classical to Pop

Overview
In an effort to bring back stores that are unique and offer merchandise unavailable elsewhere, Music and More will feature only music themed merchandise and several exclusives not available anywhere else.

Building Description
This store is housed between Joey’s and The Silly Symphony Pavilion. The exterior is of a brick building, very square and straight, with no indication of what might be inside except a sign that reads “Maestro Mickey’s Music and More…” with a violin and a trumpet painted on it. The look should remind one of a New York or Los Angeles two story store. Inside, the store is anything but ordinary, it is much larger that the outside would indicate and features all sorts of color and props. The color palette and decorations of the store will be inspired by Fantasia.

Merchandise
I don’t know if anyone will get this reference, but this should be like the Colony store in New York city, which is the GO TO place for anyone in the area for sheet music and hard to find CD’s. It will also be like a virgin mega store in terms of depth of selection for the genre’s of CD’s being sold.

Sheet music, and I mean SHEET MUSIC. This store will the place where you can purchase piano, guitar, and various other instrument sheet music for ALL of your favorite, classic, and new Disney movies.
CD’s of every Disney movie, attraction, and tv show ever made. This would be the place to come for trying to find that hard to locate album you’ve been dying to add to your collection.
Instruments are available for the very high end customer. On display, and serving more as show pieces than as everyday merchandise, there are Violins, Trumpets, Saxophones, and a whole variety of instruments crafted with Disney logos and other designs. These are works of art and instruments all in one and sell for quite a pretty penny.

My Disney Soundtrack Stations
Inside the store are stations that allow guests to purchase My Disney Soundtracks. These cd’s contain songs chosen by the guests from a LARGE collection, including many tracks from the parks and rides. Guests choose the songs, the artwork for the cd and case, and then how many copies they would like. After purchasing, the guest will receive their copy after only a brief wait, or can have it delivered to their hotel room, if staying on property.

Story
Everyone knows that Mickey, when not acting, enjoys working as a conductor for local bands and orchestras. Few however, know that Mickey is an avid collector of instruments and sheet music. He has decided to start his own store as a center point for the world of music, and hopes that musicians both aspiring and professional will stop by and share his passion. Guests should be sure to check out some of Mickey’s memorabilia hanging on the walls, including; posters from his past concerts, the sorcerer’s hat he got to wear in Fantasia, the costume he wore for The Band Concert, and one or two of the busted instruments from Concert Hour.

Summary

In conclusion, I hope you all enjoy my presentation of Tin Pan Alley.

My limitations in this contest come down to my lack of artistic ability and I hope that my words, photo references, and crude drawings convey the ideas floating around in my head.

Basically, I see this section of the park becoming an exciting land akin to the energy and vibe you feel when walking through any of the lands in the Magic Kingdom, or what you feel when you first enter Hollywood Studios.

With something for thrill seekers, families, nostalgia buffs, music lovers, gourmands, and Disney fans, I feel that this expansion offers something for everyone.

Thank you all for your kinds words, insightful criticisms, and patience over the past few months. I have truly enjoyed being a part of this contest. I will be away from my computer starting tomorrow evening (a three day camping trip with the school I teach at). So I won't see the results until Friday, but I wish Chrony good luck and I know that she will deliver an excellent alternative to Tin Pan Alley for you all to enjoy.

Thanks again,

Fractal514

PS- I reserve the right to add links, text, or make spelling corrections prior to 9pm Tuesday evening. Judges please let me know if that is a problem.
