My first thought was why not just make it an app that you could download to your personal devices? This would eliminate the need for an additional device throughout the park that's the size of a phone, when 99% of guests are already carrying around their phones.
Believe it or not, this was actually my original idea for the Pokédex. An intuitive little app that you could use so you didn’t have to carry around another device. I considered it for a while, and then dropped it for the following reasons:
  • The target audience for the land is kids, and not every kid has his or her own phone. Fighting over parents’ devices would be an excellent way to dampen the mood for the rest of the trip.
  • As every phone is different, not every sensor is guaranteed to be present. For instance, Apple is the only real smartphone maker as of yet to implement Ultra Wideband, and only in the iPhone 11 and newer. Unless we wanted to limit certain app capabilities to specific devices, this would greatly hinder the capabilities of the Pokédex. While things like WiFi and Bluetooth are more common across smartphones, there are still devices that don’t support Bluetooth LE, etc. Not to mention the processing power needed to run the Pokémon recognition neural networks. The only ways Universal could get around these cross-device inconsistencies would be to make the app severely limited in order to work with almost every phone, or to restrict certain features to newer phones, which would most likely lead to guest complaints (“My friend’s phone can locate nearby Pokémon, why can’t mine?”)
  • Hardware-specific features, like the in-attraction wireless chargers, are much easier to implement when every Pokédex is the same.
  • When the Pokédex is a separate device, guests are less likely to use their phones! There’s no longer the possibility of pulling out your phone to use the Pokédex and getting distracted by something else.

See the edits above - while I do still have some reservations (ie do people get refunds if the wideband goes down, do people pay more for a better experience) I am always open to new perspectives and clarifications.

Immunity Challenge 6: A Holiday House

8B44C6B7-03EE-4F9B-91FB-A2F996E4B19C.png

During the main challenge your team was asked to revamp the KidZone section of Universal Studios Florida. Universal still has plenty of room for improvement, and given it is now Christmas season what better thing to improve their holiday offerings! For this immunity challenge, if you chose to complete it, pitch a Holiday themed house for either Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios. What is a holiday house? Well during Halloween Horror Nights there are 10 haunted houses that act as extremely popular walkthrough attractions, and these houses are so popular that it has gone on to become one of the best selling theme park events in the state. A Holiday House does not have to be scary the only requirements is that it is a walkthrough and that it is tied into something holiday related. It can be based on an IP or a whole new concept.

This immunity challenge is completely optional, and if you choose to submit something it must be done in a private message set up with @tcool123; don't worry Mech Figment has ways to access that account. Please do not use more than two sentences and one image for your submission.

The immunity challenge is due on Wednesday, November 3rd at 10 PM EST.

In addition given how the elimination process works differently here that it does in other competitions since there is only one team to pull from this means I can post the Bottom Four early as the Chief Imagineer had decided them.

The Bottom Four

@PerGron , @Disney Dad 3000 you are both safe. All six members of Team Creators please vote within the lounges I have set up for each of you. The deadline to submit your vote is on Wednesday, November 3rd at 11:59 PM EST. Remember that the immunity challenge closes at 10 PM on the 3rd as well. If all the votes and eligible immunity challenges are submitted then we can advance to the next challenge early.

In addition remember that this is a double elimination which means the two players with the most votes will go home.

I'm mentally taking this game way too seriously and I care about @D Hulk as a friend too much to have this mess with my mental health. I'm taking myself out of the equation to avoid the inevitable panic attack/freakout of me getting voted out.
Perhaps you already made up your mind, but I may know what comes next and even if you get voted out (again IF) it will not be a definite end in the game.

Would suck to quit the game only to find that out later so figured @tcool123 would not mind for the benefit of the game overall.

Yeah, don’t quit, @TheOriginalTiki. And don’t hold it against me for making a difficult nomination choice, please. I’m sorry that this week has been so hard for you.
I was never upset with you on any sort of personal level, I was just upset at how it was affecting me mentally. I hope that makes sense. Isn't depression/anxiety FUN, kids?!!? 👽👽

MechFigment's Reviews

Hello Team Creators rest assured this will be a continuation of my analyzations similar in style to the one that you call "tcool"; it's as if he wrote them himself. Just a heads up MechFigment is a huge fan of the Pokemon franchise, and has played at least one game from each generation. Pokemon as a whole is a logical choice as we're already seeing Universal Japan leverage the IP in the parks to boost
attendance; I expect that sooner rather than later we will see something similar here in the states. With all that said let us jump right into it!

To start off I have a few qualms with the premise of the land. My first issue is that the region is simply called the Everglades when most of the recent regions have unique names (Unova, Alola, Galar, Lental, etc) it's surprising to see just Everglades. This isn't to say it's a bad concept I actually think the Everglades/Keys would be a fantastic backdrop for an area in the Pokémon games given its biodiversity and natural beauty. My other qualm is that the only Pokémon from the first generation are present here, and without any variants or anything to set them apart I feel like it may have been best to simply recreate an area in Kanto as that is what the team seemed to do. The reliance on the original 151 to me seems like a squandered opportunity when Pokémon like the Totodile line, Corsola, the Snivy line (could be a commentary at the invasive snakes in the state ala Alola's Ratatas/Yungoose), Carnivine, etc. I remember earlier in discussion how some suggested special forms of certain Pokémon like a mangrove inspired Trevenant, and I think some customization like that to some of the 151 would have also sufficed. I understand why the 151 was chosen given they're the originals, but at the same time it just feels safe.

I think the natural look of the land will be a huge boon for theming as Universal Studios currently has no area which features nature, and as such this would aid in setting apart your land from the rest of the park. The walkthrough of the land is nice, and the map is a great supplement as it allows for an easier time to navigate mentally while reading through all of this. The land sounds like an ease to navigate, and the central carousel is a nice touch.

The Pokedex is always great, and I appreciate how you were able to work it into the land. Some parts of this page feel unfinished given how the Expansion Pack abruptly ends after mentioning only three pokeballs. I think the importance on including the ease of charging the Pokedex throughout the land was a smart move as devices of such technology often drain faster than expected. I think all of the high-tech features are really cool, and the usage of the positioning and sensors is impressive. The battling functions are really neat, and the transferring of Pokémon into Pokémon Go is great; I'd finally be able to get my hands on Pokémon like Kangaskan and Mr. Mime as they're the two Pokémon I am missing from the 151 on that game.

Team Rocket: Poke-Pursuit is nice to see as it adds a quality family coaster to the area, and would be much more of a draw than Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster ever was. The queue while simple is effective, and logically builds up the idea of being here for a huge challenge within the stadium. The preshow while being comical and entertaining is an effective way of setting up the attraction that follows. With that said the preshow is rather cute and the fact that it's split into two distinct preshow rooms aids in capacity, and elevates the whole attraction a new level. The extra detail on the ride of the Pokémon being sucked up reflecting what's happening in the land is a nice touch, and a detail that definitely would not go unnoticed. Overall, a really cute ride with lovable characters that would be sure to entertain guests. A far more superior replacement to the former family coaster in the area.

The Safari Zone as an explorable interactive area allowing for kids to burn off steam was a great improvement on the previous play areas in the former land, and for that I applaud you. I'm not 100% sold on the volcano being a part of the facade given the Everglades setting. With that said I understand why it was included as it was a simple way to get away with including fire types, but given the rest of the land is inspired by the South Florida region it is a bit surprising. I think the way the Safari Zone works as a whole however worked really well, and was a great way to involve a lot of the Pokémon while working in biomes. I think guests will be pretty entertained going around spotting all the Pokémon, and the various AAs that are throughout the attraction add a wow factor to the walkthrough exploration experience. PokePlaza Merry Go Round was a cute addition, and was a great way to incorporate a bunch of diverse Pokémon while adding a bit of family friendly capacity.

The interactive experiences really aided in fleshing out the entire land, and added a lot of value into the area. I will say I wish it was talked more about how the Pokémon would be roaming the area, and how they would interact with the environments. Little details like that would have brought life to the area, but with that said the project is still very detailed. I applaud all of the effort that has gone into the project, and appreciate everything that went into the whole experience. I think the various gyms are really neat, and the puzzles to get inside them are a great way to work into the puzzles typically seen in the games. The Battle of the Elite Eight was a bit odd to see given Pokémon is known for the Elite Four, but this does align with Pokémon Sword and Shield. With all of that taken into account I think this was a really great way to work in the battling mechanic, and given how hard it can be to get that right in person I think you guys nailed it!

The Pokémon Center was a nice enough shop although with all the plushes being present it may be a bit overwhelming to find a specific Pokémon in the retail section. The added benefit of being where you can update your Pokémon's move set was a nice thing to see. The Pokemart is a nice complement to the Pokémon Center, and does an effective job of being the one stop shop for the rest of the land's merchandise. PokePlaza Grill was nice, but I wish a bit more of the menu was mentioned even if it was one or two items. Diglett's Dough House is a really cute concept, and I love the name. The various punny pastries are really cute, and design wise would probably be a favorite among guests. I wish the Juice and Smoothie Shop had a more set in stone name as it feels like it was a last-minute throw in, but the menu itself was a great touch. The various flavors and connections to the berries from the games was a nice touch, and won me over. I do think having a mention of all the snacks at the end was an odd layout choice as it could have been a great way to flesh out the PokePlaza Grill description.

Some overall takeaways this land tries to blend the anime and video games together while also mixing in a whole new region, and I personally understand why this is the route taken however given it seems that Nintendo typically doesn't reference the anime in the games I'd be surprised to see the land work that in as well. In addition, I think communication and pacing is key for projects that are a full-on land. I'd like to also mention that it's important to do a quick run through to make sure there's no dead links or links that send you to the wrong tab ;) I think last challenge you guys hit the head on the nail on what it takes, and with a bit more time y'all will really nail it down. PokePlaza was an enjoyable read, and if it were real would be insanely popular. In my opinion it is a far better use of the space than what is currently there as not only would it be a draw for children but for older generations as well given the generational appeal of Pokémon. Great work Team Creators!

Wanted to share my immunity project because I'm super proud of it, especially the Dan Aykroyd scare actors screaming at you to buy their vodka :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious:

Christmas with the Kranks: The Maze

This maze will be inspired by the insane commercialism at play around the holiday season, seeing the titular Kranks putting on the maze in-universe as a way to upstage everyone else on the block as far as over the top tacky Christmas decorations go. The neighbors are none too happy though, so watch out for the Dan Aykroyd scare actors who shout at you to "FREE FROSTY" and "BUY CRYSTAL SKULL VODKA!!!" as you go through the wayward winter wonderland of the Kranks where the TRUE villain is the cynicism of the holiday season which has only been amplified ten-fold since the release of the already infamously cynical film.
