Believe it or not, this was actually my original idea for the Pokédex. An intuitive little app that you could use so you didn’t have to carry around another device. I considered it for a while, and then dropped it for the following reasons:My first thought was why not just make it an app that you could download to your personal devices? This would eliminate the need for an additional device throughout the park that's the size of a phone, when 99% of guests are already carrying around their phones.
- The target audience for the land is kids, and not every kid has his or her own phone. Fighting over parents’ devices would be an excellent way to dampen the mood for the rest of the trip.
- As every phone is different, not every sensor is guaranteed to be present. For instance, Apple is the only real smartphone maker as of yet to implement Ultra Wideband, and only in the iPhone 11 and newer. Unless we wanted to limit certain app capabilities to specific devices, this would greatly hinder the capabilities of the Pokédex. While things like WiFi and Bluetooth are more common across smartphones, there are still devices that don’t support Bluetooth LE, etc. Not to mention the processing power needed to run the Pokémon recognition neural networks. The only ways Universal could get around these cross-device inconsistencies would be to make the app severely limited in order to work with almost every phone, or to restrict certain features to newer phones, which would most likely lead to guest complaints (“My friend’s phone can locate nearby Pokémon, why can’t mine?”)
- Hardware-specific features, like the in-attraction wireless chargers, are much easier to implement when every Pokédex is the same.
- When the Pokédex is a separate device, guests are less likely to use their phones! There’s no longer the possibility of pulling out your phone to use the Pokédex and getting distracted by something else.
