Trip Report The "HECK YEAH My Job Sent Us to WDW" + 2 Birthdays Trip Report

The cast of this trip is the same as our last trip:

Me (Lynn) and my husband (Brett)

Trent
: Our son was just about to turn 1 this trip. His birthday was just 2 days after we got home, so we celebrated him the entire trip. It was also Brett's birthday while we were down there, so we actually celebrated both of them!

Introduction and background

We stayed at the Contemporary Resort for 6 days/5 nights from June 11-16. The main reason for the trip was for a work conference I was attending at the Contemporary. The best part was that not only was my job paying for 4 of the nights, the mileage there and back, and a food per diem, but the room rate was so phenomenal, that we had to take advantage and stay an extra night. $179 per night and no tax…yes, please!

Oh and Brett and Trent tagged along. One would think that it was torture sitting in a conference all day while at the Happiest Place on Earth, especially since it was an accounting conference…us CPAs aren’t known for our party-hard skills…but it wasn’t bad since it was so unbearably hot during the day that we wouldn’t have wanted to even go to a park anyway.

I did not do any type of pre-trip report for this trip. Why? Because when I tediously put together a pre-trip report for our April trip and shared it all over the interwebs, it got completely rearranged the second we arrived on property. Oops.

Since this was our first time staying in a monorail resort, our main goal was to maximize the convenience factor…so the plan was to do either Epcot or Magic Kingdom each day, but we didn’t have any specific plans on which one we did on each day. We kinda winged it and it ended up working out so well.

We LOVED not having to get in the car, park (probably at the very end of a row because that seems to always happen), take a tram to get to the park, then do it all over again to leave the park. And no folding up the stroller either! We could just put Trent in and roll him right onto the monorail. It was glorious.

They strolled around before heading back to the room to hang out.

We had a speaker at lunch, so the meal was much better today. (Sorry for the blurry food photos, all photos taken by me during the conference were from my iPhone 4S)

I had a tasty salad with balls of mozzarella cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette.

Get this…the bread basket had pretzel bread! We got two in our basket of various breads and I ate them both – so sorry to any fellow table members that wanted pretzel bread…MINE!

The main dish was steak, mashed potatoes and vegetables.

To finish it up, pistachio mascarpone cheesecake.

During the afternoon, Brett and Trent stayed in the room. I would have wondered why they didn’t go to MK since it’s so convenient and Brett wouldn’t have had to fold up a stroller while carrying a baby, but it was so hot out that he didn’t want to go out and have them both get miserable just in time for me to be done with the conference and ready to have some fun.

So Trent passed the time by making our clothes smell like feet.

After the conference, we took the monorail to the Magic Kingdom. It was still blazing hot out, so I retreated into the shops while Brett took photos of the flag retreat (see what I did there?).

The rice krispie treats were calling my name, so I bought a bag of them, split 2 with Trent and then put them in the stroller where they nearly melted. However, they provided a delicious bedtime snack the rest of the nights. Next time, we should get this instead.

I'm enjoying your trip report. We visited when my daughter was nine months and again at fifteen months. Disney World with a toddler is an adventure. :)

We then headed towards New Fantasyland. Look at that line for Peter Pan….sheesh.

We got Little Mermaid Fastpasses, then admired the beautiful area by Be Our Guest.

We then ate at Cosmic Rays. We both got chicken sandwiches and Trent got an Uncrustables kids meal.

IMG_1927.jpg

I had to eat Trent’s Uncrustable because he only wanted french fries and grapes and I already took the darn sandwich out of the plastic. Sure, I could have thrown it away, but I usually don’t throw peanut butter away. :hungry:

But I couldn’t get mad at him. I mean, how could you get mad at this face?

Ok, not the best example of a cutesy face, but you get the idea.

After dinner, it was our Fastpass return time for Little Mermaid.

I thought it would be interesting to show just how much people really need to not use their camera flashes on dark rides.

Below is a photo Brett took of Ursula on The Voyage of the Little Mermaid. His photo captured someone else’s flash going off for their photo, so this is how their photo turned out as well.

Disney June Day 3-28.jpg

I can barely even see her facial expression or the image in the crystal ball. What I can see are the outlets and speakers that Disney Imagineers try so hard to meticulously hide with special lighting.

Now here is Brett’s photo he took a second later with no flash.

Isn't that so much better? I bet that person that used their flash hit delete on that photo after they saw it. I’m sure glad your flash ruined the magic for others on the ride with you in order for you to have a photo worthy of the trash.

/end rant :banghead:

You can tell you're married to a photography when not only are you mad about using the flash, but you have a totally valid set of statements on why the flash is bad.

That cheesecake looks so good!

Oh man, flashes on dark rides irks me so bad! Especially on POTC!

I was a little nervous about pistachio cheesecake, but it was good!

What make and model of camera are you using for your photos? They're quite amazing.

Thank you - being a good photographer helps too ;) His camera is the Canon 5D Mark III and he uses several lenses, but 2 of the ones he uses the most are the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

I love this TR! Your son is just so adorable and smiley :) Your husbands pictures are amazing as well. What camera does he use?

Thank you! Yes he is a happy little guy. See above for the camera answer :)

A little cheeseball posing action outside of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid.

We then headed towards the Storybook Circus area. I love these next 2 photos. You can be in one of the most crowded places and still have special intimate moments like this where it’s just the two of you being silly and having fun. Oh, and Daddy behind us to capture it

First, we stopped in Big Top Souvenirs to look at the offerings. We didn’t buy anything, just admired.

Then, Trent went bananas over the splash area. He couldn’t walk very far on his own yet at this point, so I had the joy of walking along with him to get wet.

“C’mon Ma! This way…let’s go!”
