The Great Movie Ride II - Main Competition Thread

To @Shannoninthemagic point, you have a passion and interest in that subject matter, and that is great. We are all here because of one passion or another, some broader focused than others. The competition or community project setting though is about working on a variety of ideas. Sometimes that overlaps directly with your passion, but when it doesn't that is an opportunity to try something new.
If you can say with sincere honesty, you will join and leave all of your Roger Rabbit and toon ideas for personal projects, we would be happy to see you join. As I relayed to you several weeks before the contest, there wasn't going to be a true opportunity all competition long to work in a studios park or utilize the Roger Rabbit IP. I am not one to leave someone out but pitching the same ideas to your team each round is counterproductive,

Note anyone else out there that is just now seeing the changes announced and would like to participate for the remaining time period, reach out as we would be happy to add you.
With one week under our belt here in Pigeon Forge and our time in Dollywood complete, it is time to explore a bit more into the other offerings of Pigeon Forge and its neighbor Gatlinburg. While Dollywood is certainly a major draw and has only increased in popularity over the years, the tourist offerings locally provide quite a wide range of fun, leisurely, wild, and often zany things to do when in the area. This will make for great “filming” potential for our next scene.
Maybe you are the museum type and want to brush up on your education while in town. Luckily for you, there are a several here, and many of them seem slightly out of place. Since this is a competition about movies, perhaps Titanic is one of your favorites, then head over to the Titanic Museum with yes, a huge partial replica of the Titanic itself. If that is not your speed, then head on over to the Beyond the Lens! Or Salt & Pepper Shaker Museums. No matter which you visit, a must stop is the Alcatraz East Crime Museum, a museum dedicated to the history of crime in the US, with a façade blending features from Tennessee’s first state prison and of course Alcatraz.
If you did not get your ride fix in at Dollywood, then you are in luck, the area also offers numerous standalone attractions to fill out your day. Sure, you could check out the nearby Alpine Coaster, the 7D dark ride simulator over at The Island in Pigeon Forge, the Castle of Chaos at the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Gatlinburg Space Needle, and many others, but there are a couple of iconic experiences in Gatlinburg that warrant your attention: Earthquake The Ride and Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride.
With names evoking glamorous E tickets that you would find at Universal or Disney, these roadside attractions are a bit of a badge of honor if you make a trip to the area. Whether you get your money’s worth is irrelevant, it is the fun, experience, and story you will tell your friends after checking out these must do’s attractions. Effects that may or may not work, odd mannequins, the occasional ride stoppage (no we are not talking about Rise of the Resistance here) could all be highlights of your ride on either Earthquake or Jurassic Jungle. Tourist trap or tourist hit, does it really matter for these attractions with visions of grandeur from our favorite theme parks, but without the budget, design and upkeep to match?

TRAILER TUESDAY
This week's Feature Film is The Evil Dead.
Released in 1981 and both written and directed by Sam Raimi, this horror film follows five college students and their "adventures" at a cabin in the Tennessee wilderness. We'll leave the trailer for you to explore on your own for those faint of heart, but the film ended up being a bit of boost for the career of Raimi who I'm sure many of you famously know him from his work on Spiderman and the more recent Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
Filmed in Morristown, TN, just about an hour from our current shooting location in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, the film has all the requisite 80's horror scenes complete with demonic voices, blood, guts, prosthetics and more as Raimi got creative with what he had to work with, similar to your roadside attraction challenge this week. With a budget of $375,000, the film went on to spawn a few sequels, comic and even a tv series 30 years after the original film. Bruce Campbell who played the lead, became a Raimi regular over the years as you can find him in a number of his projects.

Touchwood Pictures presents...
Backstory
Throughout the centuries of the Volunteer State’s existence, there have been many folk tales told of chimeras, monsters, and ghosts. Some people believed them while others were suspicious of them.
One autumn evening, a group of six UT Knoxville college students got off the beaten path near Pigeon Forge. What they saw that evening was a amalgamation of cryptids from all sorts of American folk tales. After they all emerged from the Whispy Woods that night, they quit college, and opened a research station to study these ominous woods. The series of stylized, obscure drawings that are found in their station speaks for themselves for what is out in the woods. The former college students now operate a shuttle service into the woods for those who dare to see the legends for themselves.
The research station also includes every book and newspaper article out there that has ever featured any of the Tennessee folk tales. Some of the folk tales that are featured:
- Loveland Frogman: half-frog, half-man sightings across Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee
- The Bell Witch: stories of strange happenings at the Bell family house in the 1800s
- The Pitty-Pat: tales of shadowy creature dating back to the Civil War
- Hellhounds: reports of a woman in college giving out ridiculously large puppies only to find out that they turned into 7-foot tall creatures, some of which seemed to wait along deserted country roads
- Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp: although most accounts of this creature come from South Carolina, there have been sightings in eastern Tennessee
- Wampus Cat: part cat, part human, this 4-foot tall creature feeds on small mammals
- Hopkinsville Goblins: extraterrestrial encounters at the Sutton family farm in 1955
Area Description
Laboratory of the Unknown is a restaurant attached to Tennessee Whispy Woods (TWW) is themed to a research/discovery center where scientists work to analyze the mysterious creatures of folk tales that have been spotted in the Pigeon Forge Valley.
When guests enter they will walk through a 'museum' of discoveries made - such as fossils, 'photographs', etc in the center. From there they have several options for where to go.
The first is the ticket stand for the ride, which will feature several automated kiosks and a stand where an employee (or a few depending on crowds) will be working.
The second will be the entrance and exit for TWW.
The third will be a gift shop which will sell clothes, shot glasses, toys, and other generic tourist-trap merchandise based on the creatures and the laboratory. An example of the cryptid themed toys would be this adorable jackrabbit plush:
The final will a stairway upstairs to Laboratory of the Unknown, the facilities themed dining experience.
Roadside Attraction
Tourists board a log shaped dark ride vehicle that seats a capacity of 4 guests, and are whisked off into the unknown, similar to the tales of the college students who ventured into these same forests not long ago as described in the curt queue area approaching the attraction.
As rides begin to lurch forward, two wooden doors open up in front of them and soon the riders are encased in complete darkness. Wolf howls can be heard in the distance, mist begins to encircle the vehicles and a cool blast of breeze can be felt from above. The vehicles continue on ever so slowly through the track in the woods. Suddenly the vehicles stop and out from the right hand side of the vehicle pops a Wampus Cat screeching and clawing at the vehicle. The vehicle continues forward before approaching the Bell Witch on the left hand side, screaming at the gets to get out of her woods.
Frightened now, the vehicles continue to move forward at a bit more of a brisk pace, or at least it feels that way to the riders as they are unsure of what lies beyond the next two double doors into the upcoming room. Soon a Lizard Man animatronic and a Loveland Frogman blast out at the vehicles from beyond the facade of trees on both sides of the vehicle as it stops once more to take in the surroundings. What is this attraction? Why is this on the roadside? Much like other famous roadside attractions -- Who knows! But who cares because this is kind of bizarrely unique and a cool experience.
After escaping the Lizard Man, riders turn back through the forest on the opposite side of the interior of the show building, back towards the loading station, but before they do, riders are spooked by Hellhounds barking and clawing at the vehicles from the right hand side, before making an abrupt turn out of two double doors and into the light - and back towards the loading station.
Laboratory of the Unknown
A premium dining experience like no other...
Similar to Be Our Guest and Skippers Cantina at WDW, the laboratory will have three unique, highly-themed sections. Guests will dine in one of these sections but are free to walk around and check out.
The first is the Grand Atrium, which will overlook the below museum, and feature more museum-like displays.
The second is the Laboratory, which will have advanced scientific equipment analyzing foliage and atmospheric pressure.
The third is the Cavern, which will be full of gemstones and ominous sound effects.
Since the attraction focuses on folklore from around the country, the restaurant will serve food from each of these regions. Popular dishes include Southern Fried Chicken, New England Clam Chowder, Pacific Halibut, Midwestern Streak and Corn, and the New York burger.

TOUCHWOOD PICTURES
TENNESSEE WHISPY WOODS
Hello to all our voluntary members of Touchwood Pictures, participating in what is now a purely “for fun,” non-competitive Imagineering workshop! I hope you’re enjoying this new direction. Do not hesitate to provide us hosts with feedback, for instance regarding prompt duration & due dates and how all that works with your schedules. We want you to have fun!
This week’s prompt was pretty much a roadside attraction, set in Pigeon Forge where the competition is fierce. It’s a small-scale project, which can sound simple but that in turn requires great team communication to deliver a cohesive final product.
While topic-wise you could go pretty much anywhere with this – Jurassic Jungle is pretty dang unhinged – I appreciate the local Tennessee flavor you’ve chosen. It would resonate with locals, and it would be unique (and hopefully travel-worthy) for visitors.
The backstory and overall attraction description are a good beginning for our adventure. As a roadside attraction, it couldn’t hurt to put in a little more exterior description. How would this look to drivers zooming past? Would it include an instantly memorable sight, like the Top Secret upside down White House at the Wisconsin Dells, or the nation's assorted “World’s Largest _____” tourist traps? Would there be billboards (preferably chintzy) from hundreds of miles out? Most area visitors won’t already know about this, so you’d need a good visibility campaign.
The log ride (simply called Roadside Attraction?) is conceptually intriguing. Tonally, it splits the difference between Splash Mountain and Knott’s Timber Mountain. I could totally see an A-list park like Disney striking gold with a cryptid / Fearsome Critter themed water ride like this. Your version, in contrast, reads far more ramshackle and homespun, in that delightfully tacky roadside attraction sorta way. I like that! Brief, indescribably off, yet brimming with personality. Brer’s illustrations add a lot.
The Laboratory of the Unknown is a good add-on. Venues such as this often boast a wide variety of activities…enough to let tourists fill out a few hours on-site with their wallets open, and enough to attract a whole family with a wide variety of interests.
From the earlier intro, I came in expecting to read a little more about a museum and a gift shop as well. (Both of which would definitely be welcome.) The restaurant as well feels, er, undercooked. With a bit more time, a bit more in-depth description and fleshed-out menu, it could be more. At this point, I don’t mind it if Touchwood Pictures spends longer developing stronger projects, especially if you’re all interested in it. The one-day extension certainly helped; don’t hesitate to ask for even more!
First off, thank you to the members of the newly formed Touchwood Pictures, for continuing this journey on The Great Movie Ride with @D Hulk and I. While not what we envisioned (things happen), we are happy to have the mix of old and new contestants from the season taking this ride with us for the remainder of the season.
As Hulk mentioned, if you find time is not on your side, don't hesitate to ask for an extension of a day or more if needed. At this point, it is all about giving ample time for your creativity to explore the project challenges and see what you can come up with since even the easy-going competition setting, we were using is gone.
This week, you were tasked with creating a new roadside attraction for the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. Our intro highlighted only a few of the, how shall we say, interesting experiences the area has to offer. Jurassic Jungle and Earthquake are some all-timers, so let's see how your new attraction stacks up with the tourists.
Tennessee Whispy Woods
First off, the folk tales/cryptid angle is a solid way to go here. I got a little worried at first that you might go too far with your other ideas that would be a bit out of place for the area, but this idea is a great direction to take for a new roadside attraction.
The backstory and area description does a great job setting the stage. Nothing to complex, and just enough detail to let us know what's happening, and snippets of the various creatures we'll see. While nothing to horrific like our feature film Evil Dead, this has all the elements of what could be a mild thrill and fun experience. I know time was an issue for most but would love to see even more detail in this section with renderings of the exterior, oddball attraction posters, how tourists know about this place (marketing)etc. but descriptive wise, all we need is here.
The ride through description is brief, but I like the direction this is taking and where it could go. With the subject matter and setup, the opportunity for a really off the wall experience is here, fitting with the local offerings. I think you could have gone even sillier, but you do hint at the zaniness some in the write up. The premise and execution of this attraction has real possibility to be one of those must dos, though why am I doing this type of thing. The cryptid artwork used here does a fantastic job bringing life to the presentation.
A restaurant was not a challenge requirement, but its inclusion here is a great idea. A weird dining experience to accompany your ride could only help in attracting guests, and a themed meal would slot right into the tourist offerings. As with other portions, there was room here for more detail and info, but the idea has great merit, and would be a great combo with the ride.
Overall, I think Touchwood (never get tired of saying that), was on to something here. This was a bit of an oddball challenge, that required a bit of an oddball attraction and Whispy Woods was created with the right spirit and intent that was called for. Time permitting, I'd love a bit more details here and there, but overall, a solid start for this newly formed Studio. Look forward to what's next in store from you all!

Whether you include a ride, or rides, the size, scale, experience and more, is entirely up to you, but make sure your park captures the essence of the film you choose. A full listing of films from The Great Movie Ride can be found here.
