The Future Of The Haunted Mansion

What does the future hold for HM, which is my favourite WDW attraction and is, as I have said before, possibly the greatest classic theme park dark ride ever created. Will there be any big changes, or will it be left alone, aside from any minor refurbs to keep it in good working order? Will the aging Omnimover system at HM be replaced or updated?
Not necessarily looking for facts here (although if you have some, by all means), just looking for some opinions. Alot of talk lately regarding what people think the future of POTC should be, and I was curious about what people's views are on HM moving forward.

I really really wish that TDO would remove the blurry CGI cartoon ghosts from the end of the ride and go back to the old version. MUCH more convincing, and not an effect you could see at home on any TV screen. Also I wish the awful cluttered claustrophobic new queue would go away. It's a freaking mess!

Pretty much that!

This is a biggie for me. I'm generally very afraid (Be afraid!) of pluses to the mansion. Tweaks here and there and especially new additions terrify me. Of the changes made in the last couple of years; I've only liked the "Endless Escher" stairs every other change has been for the worse, IMO.

If changes must happen I'd prefer they be attempted fixes to correct some of the previous "additions". Removal would also be acceptable. That said the scene that establishes the backstory of the Ghost Host should NEVER be removed. It could theoretically be tweaked but I don't trust TDO to handle any major changes to the mansion.

My stance on the hanging scene is to leave it alone! Although I do have two compromise ideas that "could" work provided they aren't taken to the extreme... sadly I don't have enough faith in today's imagineering team to leave well enough alone or know when to stop when it comes to updates and upgrades.

Haunted Mansion = Classic. Shame it doesn't come with a "grandfathered-in" contract or distinction preventing major changes.

Besides stopping the insane way they herd folks thru the stretching room to build capacity, i hope they upgrade the way they light scenes in order to be more consistent and theatrical. (much like the volume set for the doom buggie audio seems to be on a sliding scale). Imho, of course.

this is a good point. That has become worse and worse, it never use to be that way. It's almost unsafe the way they are doing it now and I dread going anymore because of that alone. The loading room backlog and where everyone has to merge into an insane single file line is ridiculous.

HM was impressive the first time we took our son in 1975-way ahead of the times and still impressive to this day as I take my grandchildren. It is such a classic-it will stay forever.

This is where they need the biggest change. The narration in the fireplace lobby is on a loop and doesn't wait for everyone to get in, which means the doors opening to the two stretch rooms are on the same timer. Not only can you miss what's happening (not hear the introduction, nor see the portrait aging gag), but it can start jamming people into the Doom Buggy lobby. I've seen the Doom Buggy lobby packed to capacity because there was an omnimover stoppage, but that didn't stop the CMs from trying to force more guests from the stretch room in yelling at us to keep moving forward. I had to yell back there was no room to move forward. Ridiculous. If that happens again, I'm prepared to take a picture and send it to the fire marshal... and the media.

The other issue with the fireplace lobby is that it's so short and it has just the one portrait gag. If they need that room to simply measure out a crowd's worth of guests to move into the stretch room, then just cut the dialogue. It's a bit of a throw-away...

When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls.
Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!
They could have that with several other throw-away lines in the outdoor queue or on the ride.

The portrait gag could also be on the ride, seeing it age and then with lightning, revert back to normal. Be a great replacement for the horror that is 13 o'clock.

The attic scene needs to be re-lit (light reflecting off the marriage photos obscuring what they're supposed to be) and a much better projection mapping on the hatchet bride.

The graveyard scene has both A+ effects (the singing busts) and F effects (stuffed cloth tied to an obvious metal rod that sproings up). Upgrade the F effects.

The change in the hitchhikers was a step forward and back. Forward in their special effects. Backwards in the decreased visibility.

Im noticing this more and more across property, CM;s are literally yelling at guests now in various locations and attractions. Are things that out of control and gotten that bad? Disney World was not this way even 15 years ago. But good for calling them out at the HM, I sense Disney doesnt follow too many capacity rules anymore, they are allowing way too many into some of these things and too many in the MK in general at one time, and its being brushed under the rug and allowed.

HM needs to continue to change, just like it has over the past years. As technology in lighting, sound and special effects, and even ride technology improve these should be added to prevent the ride from feeling dated.

However, before all the “its perfect” gang have heart failure, the upgrades should always fit the style & feel of the attraction, and pay homage to past designs. For me the escher stairs fail to do this, they stand out as being a lone segment that doesn’t flow with the rest. The graveyard scene also needs some work to, from the removal of the dirty gauze, to improvements in some of the visual gags.

In short, don’t let it stand still and become a museum. Jim S already said,”it was way ahead of its time in 1975”, but it has to be allowed to evolve to stay ahead of its time for future generations.
