That is one thing I will not be doing. I think J.J. Abrams made a point of filming it on actual film rather than digital media, with the intent that it have the organic feel of the original trilogy, which packed a punch without the contrivances of 3-D. I am hoping that the new film will work in that vein as well - a great fun film to see that blasts off the screen and takes us through a fun, thrilling adventure, with some lighthearted moments for balance, all for everyone and not relying on the cheap gimmick of 3-D to be worth seeing.

(Let me be clear. I am not really knocking 3-D. I am instead talking about how the original Star Wars movies did not need it in order to take us on a bold adventure and make us feel a part of their world. And in some cases like that, 3-D can be a distraction.)
I love 3D EMAX. The theater I go to is spacious with oversized leather recliners, hard wood floors, and serves cocktails. This is not a generalization but I have noticed that people who pay extra for 3D and/or IMAX seem more serious about watching the movie -- they're quiet, I don't notice glaring cell phone screens or hear people talking on their phones or to each other and no babies. I have yet to see one crying baby in an IMAX theater. People are focused on getting their monies worth when they pay extra.

I also love the massive screens and enhanced sound, you feel like you're right there. And, it seems like you get better quality previews too -- I imagine it must cost more to advertise on IMAX. Anyway, we saw a movie that had been out for a while, so it was showing on a smaller screen and we literally watched a string of commercials before the movie including that one from ABCMouse.com -- just like watching TV at home.

With that said, it does seem like the more well noted film critics tend rip into 3D.

Why Star Wars: The Force Awakens Needs To Be Seen In IMAX

"Though J.J. Abrams revealed that he used an IMAX camera on the film, he later stated that it’s only one sequence, “but it’s a good sequence.” MSW states that it’s most likely the escape from the desert planet Jakku, and this scene will show in 70MM. The “true” eight-story IMAX theaters, as he calls them, will present the full 70MM sequence, while the “shrunk” IMAX theaters will play the Digital IMAX converted format."

And here’s what the IMAX 70MM format will look like in comparison...

Awww, I'm sure my theater does not have the real 70mm IMAX. But, the fake digitally converted IMAX, still looks amazing.

These are the seats that will sell out first.

Of course Morgan Stanley would put it second to the all time highest gross film, They want Disney to do business with them... Avengers 2 would have made a lot more money without all the Synergy BS and the unecessary deaths - in short it was an unsatisfying film, JW was not a 'Great' film it was a FUN film which is why it easily moved past Avengers 2. GotG was also a FUN film. This is what the suits miss and filmmakers generally do not the suits think there is a 'formula' to making a successful film just load it with the right Stars, 'product placement' , 'Brand Synergies' and the proper ad campaign and you will have a billion dollar film. There is indeed a formula for success and it's called making a FUN film to watch but it's hard and unpredictable.

If the upcoming SW movie is not fun but is larded up with 'brand synergy' BS it will not do well, It will do OK probably even make it's budget back.
I don't know, all of the IMAX theaters are booked for a solid month just for Star Wars, so Disney is going to make a ton of money.

I really enjoyed Avengers 2, but I have to agree that it wasn't *fun*. Also, if Loki was in A2, it would have performed much better.

I totally agree with you on Jurassic World, it was both fun and terrifying. And, I also enjoyed GotG.

Can we all just agree to never put the word Trump in a post again? Thank you.
Yeah.... sure thing. LOL.

Hashtag nation? Disgusting. I hate marketing people.
What have marketing people ever done to you? More misdirected anger, I see. LOL.

My question is, when is this up for sale?!!?

Star Wars Bonus - Star Wars fans have made Anakin a top baby name in 2014. Khaleesi is also becoming popular.

Now it's your turn as Legendary Yoda guides you on the path to becoming a Jedi Master. Standing an impressive 16 inches tall, Yoda's dynamic motorized body movement and full voice recognition make him the most realistic Star Wars toy ever. He speaks 115 phrases that will lead you to Jedi wisdom and lightsaber mastery. And with dynamic 360-degree movement, Yoda comes to life with never-before-seen lightsaber action!

"Walmart will be the only place to find the Star Wars Galactic Connexxions trading disc game by Topps, a collectible trading disc game featuring the Star Wars characters generations know and love.

At Force Friday midnight events, Walmart will hand out a free limited edition two pack of the discs, including a rare star field disc that is only available in packs given away on Force Friday. If customers find one of four special redemption discs inside Galactic Connexxions game sold in stores, on Walmart.com or during the events, they can be redeemed for an ultra-rare 14 karat gold disc and a Star Wars room makeover."

"Target is holding a late-night special event and giveaway this Friday, September 4 for Star Wars fans called Force Friday.

Force Friday at Target will include the launch of over 300 new products from the upcoming Star Wars movie The Force Awakens.

Select stores will be staying open late to debut the new Star Wars products at midnight.

Shoppers who come early have a chance to win a 4-foot-tall Chewbacca as well as a “fun giveaway,” according to Target.

For Star Wars fans who can’t make the midnight debut of Force Friday, the Star Wars shop at Target will be holding more events on Saturday, September 5 starting at 11 am.

Events include a giveaway for kids, photo ops, and demos of the new Star Wars toys."

Been checking everyday! I also want the new star wars battlefront so its a good bundle for me anyway. :joyfull:
I can see this selling out fast. So, definitely preorder asap. You probably already know this but just in case -- there will be two Star Wars PS4 bundles and second bundle will only be available at Wal-mart -- the details are below. This exclusive store only thing is such a headache, lol. Good luck!

"The packaged console features a 500 GB hard drive, a copy of the deluxe edition ofStar Wars: Battlefront, and four classic games: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter and Star Wars Bounty Hunter.

A second bundle featuring the Darth Vader console, a copy of Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars Edition, and related hardware and figures will be available only at Walmart." -USA Today

I totally love 3D but the regular IMAX is awesome, too!

I want it beamed directly into my brain so it will then be on the biggest screen ever !
LOL.

Anyway, I guess every retailer will have their own little Star Wars trinkets, gifts and exclusives. So, Star Wars fans really have to do their research. I would much rather plan a Disney vacation and book my FP's at midnight, it's so much easier! LOL.

The Force is definitely strong with retail outlets getting ready....

Whole stores have been rearranged in preparation of the Star Wars onslaught.
Boxes have arrived with giant labels all over them warning not to open until Sept 4th.
Threats are being tossed around....basiclaly, 'open them and you die' mentality.
Sheesh..!

They are really trying to create a mania feeling with this.....i can feel it and I'm not even paying too much attention to it.
I can only imagine what the uber-fans must be going through right now.
Freaking out would be a understatement, likely.
I saw them all geeking out at the D23 Expo...and that was before 'Force Friday' became a....'thing'.

I will just sit quietly off to the side...munching on my 'Star Wars' graham cookies i just found at the local grocery store....

Awww, what a nice thing to say -- now, stop making me like you.

Oh, and I totally agree. I think an internet sabbatical may be in order for me until the movie. But, WDWMAGIC forum is far too addictive and it's so hard to stay away. LOL.

The Star Wars Aftermath novel is starting to leak online. The whole Journey to the Force Awakens book stuff is more what I'm looking forward to on Force Friday.
Oh wow, that's awesome -- I didn't know about the book. It's available for pre-order on amazon.com for $13.99 on Kindle and $16.80 for hardcover for those who are interested.

Has their been anything mentioned about the event in WDW? Im wondering if i should go.........
You should go only if you seriously want to purchase something uniquely Star Wars or if you just want the 'free' messenger bag, if not just visit the store the next morning.

I put all the information on the Force Friday Mechandise Party thread.

OMG, that is hilarious.

Here is more information on Disney's global unboxing event on the Star Wars YouTube channel from MarketWatch.

>Disney is betting big on ‘Star Wars’ merchandise with unboxing extravaganza<
Disney DIS, -0.59% will hold a live global merchandise unboxing event on the “Star Wars” YouTube channel for the products and toys that will accompany the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” film. In a news release, Disney said the event will play out over 18 hours and in 15 cities in 12 countries. The “New Years Eve–style celebration” kicks off at 7:45 a.m. local time on Thursday in Sydney, Australia (5:45 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday), and will wrap up at 8 a.m. Pacific time (11 a.m. Eastern) on Thursday at Lucasfilm’s San Francisco campus.

The massive event will hit countries in Asia, Europe, Canada and North and South America, and tap online personalities from Maker Studios network — the largest content network on Google’s Inc.’s YouTube GOOG, -1.92% GOOGL, -1.80% — to help unveil the “Star Wars” merchandise.

Disney’s ambition is grandiose, but merchandise has always played a major role in the proliferation of Disney’s brands and franchises, and the event press release notes that unboxing videos on YouTube are a booming trend. Disney cited data from YouTube and OpenSlate showing that 18 of the 100 most viewed YouTube channels worldwide center around toys and unboxings, and those 18 channels amassed 8.1 billion views in the first quarter of 2015.

Disney’s 2013 animated hit “Frozen” sold more toys in 2014 than any other toy property, according to NPD Group’s toy division president, Juli Lennett. With more than 300 different items on the shelves in 2014, “Frozen” toys raked up $531 million. That and the fervor that attaches to the “Star Wars” brand are reasons Disney’s unboxing extravaganza is no surprise to Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
