The Force Awakens

Wow... They have intermissions here in Israel! Well, I think the first act of the screenplay just finished and it is a long first act. So far, the movie feels very much like ANH. The story elements parallel it in many places.

There is so far a major surprise that has to do with the new evil character. I won't spoil it!!!!

The movie so far feels like Star Wars but does not feel like a George Lucas movie.

The opening scroll was exactly like the other six films. LucasFilm logo title card followed by "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away", the Star Wars scroll, and the pan into space.

More later movie is starting back.

My opinion of the movie -

It did a great job recreating the excitement and adventure of the original trilogy. I was left confused as to who is related to who, but I suppose this was deliberate (as it was with ESB).

HOWEVER, I feel the movie was purposely imitating the original trilogy for commercial reasons at the expense of originality.

Now that I am home...

Fans of the original trilogy and not the three fan faction movies should thouroughly enjoy this film.

No spoilers here, just be forewarned.

Great show, no overuse of lens flares that JJ Abrams loves so much and no Beastie Boys music.

Special effects were mostly seamless and the characters were spot on in my opinion. Finn and Rey are fantastic, Han, Leia and Chewie feel like they are right where they belong and all the new guys and gals just feel right.

This movie made me feel like that 10yo watching the AT-ATs march across Hoth.

So now I get to see it again tomorrow in 2D.

As I said before, well worth the wait.....and the hype..... Probably will see it 5 or 6 more times before the new year.

Right now the only thing keeping me from my that is that I'll be in WDW tomorrow night but will get another showing tomorrow morning with the other engineers in my workgroup.

So my sister said she ugly-cried.

I'm fearing a main character we all grew up with dies.

I need to be emotionally prepared for this and I'm doing all I can not to go to that spoiler thread.

The Patience won't be with me.

Do I just wait and wear waterproof mascara and bring a big box of Kleenex?

I can't take it... I hope it's not Chewy.
Hopefully you'll get to see it soon, hopefully you will get to see it with someone you can talk to afterward too. My 18yo was even a bit emotional after one scene.

No spoilers though, you don't want to know until you see it, I was very happy I resisted all the spoilers as it made the movie so much better.

My sister and I are not movie criers and she said she was glad her husband went with and joked she is going to need grief counseling. o_O

I'll hold out. I've waited too long for this to ruin it now. Thanks for the encouragement!

So, if they listed Michael Arndt in the credits for screenplay (along with JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan), this must mean that parts of Lucas' original story must have survived, since Arndt's original script was based on Lucas' original story.

Not really. The WGA strongly protects the original writers, even if the final film doesn't align with the original draft much at all. Abrams and Kasdan did a rewrite of an existing draft, but did not scrap the original script altogether. That's why Arndt gets credit.

I mean, I can see where they probably deviated from Lucas' story. Such as, Lucas' stories are all told through the first person of the droids. Here, it clearly isn't.

I'm more wondering about the characters and the relationship between the characters - if any of that stayed the same. For example, the nemesis character. Also, Rey - her suspected background was never revealed in this film, proving me wrong with what I had expected, but this could change to be true in the next film (like how the relationships between characters were revealed in ESB). Who created Rey's character? Lucas?
