The Force Awakens

Director Steven Spielberg has seen the movie 3 times already. While he admits it could be the biggest film of all-time (as anyone could predict when it was announced there would be more Star Wars movies after Ep. 6)...he was reluctant in praising the film's story.

But again, Spielberg has a long relationship with Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy and a mentor/friendship with Abrams, so we can’t expect him to offer objective public commentary. Remember his comments about the Star Wars prequels, directed by his friend George Lucas, were always positive.

  • After a screening of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Spielberg admitting the film brought him to tears and told the press: "It’s absolutely amazing – it’s the best of the last three episodes. It’s the best way you could possibly imagine for George to finish it off, it has a tremendous ending and it’s very dark. You’ll cry at the end, it’s wonderful… I believe the emotions will come because the ending of this film will represent the ending to an entire saga.”
  • I can’t seem to find Spielberg’s quote about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but I remember him praising it saying it offers something for everyone.
So he praises the prequels, but only comments that TFA could break records at the box-office, and refuses to offer any positive feedback on the film's story / quality, or even simply say: "It's good." Combine this with another friend of JJ's who has seen the entire film as well, praised the action & imagery, yet when asked about story was hush-hush and could not even say he / she liked it. Makes me a little concerned.

But then again, Avatar was mostly eye candy with little story depth, and we all know how well it fared.

Heck, Spielberg produced the Transformers movies, and that franchise has no more story than "giant robots beat the **** out of each other".

i don't think it'll be the best story ever but I think there will be a neat plot twist and surprise or 2 that will have people on the edge of their seats. For me I'm excited for everything about the movie. Story seems to get put under the magnifying glass more than the other components of movies. Just like every other Star Wars film it will be a fun movie.

Any idea if there will be any critics reviews released before the movie opens? I don't give a rip about what any critic thinks, but I am curious as to how well this film will be received.

fair points but i think the most likely event here is that JJ told these guys to say absolutely NOTHING about the story. good bad or other. they've done a great job keeping the storyline details hushed and one of the ways to do that is to tell everyone to keep quiet, even with praise.
