The "E" In EPCOT

I have seen that "environmental" in place of "expiramental" thing in official Disney material before. I don't know where, though.

Those t-shirts, if they're the same ones they were selling in the parks, are not very high up on the quality meter. FWIW.

Since Epcot never fulfilled the dream of EPCOT, I was glad when they changed it from an acronym to a word. I think I'm in the minority there.

Most people never really understood that "EPCOT Center" was never supposed to fulfill the EPCOT concept. The entirety of the Florida Project is EPCOT. EPCOT Center was suppose to be the "center" of EPCOT meaning the major transportation hub. But the Florida Project with the inclusion of Celebration, Golden Oaks, the Theme Parks, Water Parks, and Downtown Disney really does come close to what Walt's vision of EPCOT was. And that being a city where people live, work, and play.

I'm (probably) older than all of you. I recall Walt describing what became the city of Celebration when he talked about EPCOT. Later, when somebody was desperately seeking financing for the second park, he shoved the table models of Future World and World Showcase together at the last minute and called it "EPCOT." He chose that unifying park name because there was a video of Walt using the acronym. The original film contained a lengthy overview of his ideal "community of tomorrow."

Yeah, I'm only a spry 49, but Roy was aware that it wasn't really EPCOT that is why they added the word "Center" to the parks original name.

Roy O. Disney died in December of 1971 and Roy E. Disney was never really involved in the various EPCOT projects. World Showcase has its origins in EPCOT's central shopping district and was being pursued as a stand alone facility. Future World was based in the EPCOT Theme Centers which sought to carry on the theme of partnering with companies to carry out industrial and technological innovations. Both were attempts to work up something without the headache of residents. The models being pushed together was done by John Hench and Marty Sklar. Celebration has little to do with EPCOT except being a town that was built by Disney. There's much more to the story of EPCOT, EPCOT Center and Celebration, but those are the highlights countering the issues with these posts.

I had thought it was Marty and one of the top imagineers (Hench as you mentioned) who was part of the EPCOT Center Mash-up. I just threw Roy in there based on the quote. And I do know that Celebration wasn't even considered part of the EPCOT plan but does accidentally fulfill the "living in" part of the concept. That is until they spun it off. Now it's just an over priced housing development next to WDW.

But I am far from a Disney Historian. As I proved.

I saw the link for like, a tenth of a second...until I got the OOPS...something went wrong page!
Looks like someone on that site might have uh...figured it out. :p
Alas I just checked and the page is still up with Environmental. Guess that e-mail saying my "opinion" on what the "E" means was forwarded to management really meant "We don't care what you think... we're saying it's Environmental now."

Pathetic, really. Sadly, there is a whole culture of this now...people who work for companies but can't be bothered to learn the history of that company.
Or what an acronym actually stands for.
I wonder if it was a mistake , or if the copy writer was told by a manager that this is what it stands for, because I said so.

On a more serious note, I would love love love it if WDW would rename itself/ The Land / EPCOT into the 'Environmental Community', or worked with that new acronym in some form or other.
Preferably combined with some serious, Walt-like ambition to contribute to society's progress.

Why not make EPCOT the world's greenest theme park? Something like that would be awesome, would restore dignity and pride to the park, relevance too.

Because experimental can easily encompass environmental progress and still apply to other fields. Though, before EPCOT gets a focus for being more green, can someone please address the Indy Cars and how inefficient they are?

And as a side note, hipsters care little for the environment, as environmental awareness has reached far too high a level of mainstream, and they will have to put up with Starbucks, as a no-name city corner cafe is the preferable choice.
