The DisneyStores are SOLD!!

The Disney Stores need to sell Mickey Mouse watches. When they do, and other things aimed at the Disney enthusiast (the people who would seek out the stores), then sales will pick back up.

There is no reason that Mickey Mouse watches, the most iconic of all Disney merchandise, is not to be found at the "Disney" Stores. They need to be distinguised from the Disney selection at Wal-Mart. The two-fer sales and some children's lines are good to have, but what should distinguish the store is the stuff that made the stores grow so much when they first started: true Disney stuff (ties, watches, DVDs, books, pins, art cels, etc.) aimed at the Disney fans, but with enough of the mundane to balance it out.

That formula works for a specialty retailer every time. It never works to have only the same stuff that you can get cheaper at Wal-Mart.

Another nail in the Disney Store coffin...

Disney online sales show 30 percent holiday growth
Mon Jan 9, 2006 6:20 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co on Monday said online and retail sales during the 2005 holiday season rose by double digits year over year.

The entertainment conglomerate said strong sales of its Mix Stick MP3 player and Tumble Time Tigger, among other items, boosted online sales by 30 percent.

Giant retailers Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. saw double-digit incremental growth in sales of Disney products during the same period, Disney said in a statement.

More complete information about holiday retail sales was not immediately available.

The company's top-selling toy for the 2005 holiday season -- with sales of nearly 1 million units worldwide -- was Tumble Time Tigger, a singing, cartwheeling version of Winnie the Pooh's striped pal aimed at toddlers.

Sales of Mix Sticks, portable music players for kids exceeded Disney and retailer projections, selling out in stores and online before the season ended.

Other strong holiday performers were Disney's Princess products, "The Chronicles of Narnia" Board Game based on the hit film, Disney Cuties apparel line for tweens and light-up Jiggly Pens.

January sales included $62.4 million from The Children's Place, a 17 percent increase compared to last year's sales of $53.3 million, and $24.6 million from Disney Store, a 4 percent decrease compared to last year's sales of $25.6 million.

Looks like The Disney Store is dragging down TCP overall results...

Seriously, if Disney couldn't make it work did they really think they could?

The just opened the new DS in our mall a few weeks ago. It's the one with the big mickey head on the outside. I went in to check it out and the size of the store was cut to less than 1/2 the size of the original store, tile floors, no more carpet, they could have at least updgraded to wood. Once again most of the items I saw in there were for little girls. The infant section was one teeny tiny area in the back corner of the store.

I live in Staten Island too! I agree about TDS renovation. It's much smaller and not as nice.

That is going to be the plan for the most park...downsizing the current stores. The store that I used to work at is the biggest mall Disney Store that I have ever seen and we were told to enjoy the size while we could. When they refurb that store it will prob be about 1/3 the size it is now and look completely different. I am yet to see the new look of the stores though, just the new costumes.

We had so many guest coming in to my store over Holiday asking about grown-up clothing and other merchandise that it wasn't even funny. I really think TCP made a big mistake in further restricting our product lines to children-only. All we had to offer our adult guests were t-shirts, and not that many people buy or wear t-shirts in the winter. A lot of our children's lines sold very well--my store met many of its goals--but we could have sold so much more if we'd had more merchandise to offer our wide range of guests. Hopefully it gets better.

We went into one of the new stores today in Burlington, MA. Wood floors and a very strange design. The store had 2 entrances and was almost 2 stores with a door between them. One part was all princess items. The other side merchandise other than princess items, but NO Disney music CDs and a small collection of DVDs. On the way out my 8 year old son said; "Why did they do that to the store? I don't like it anymore."

Wood floors?

I knew they were having trouble with the new tile flooring -- but never thought they would move to wood floors. It sounds very TCPish.

The store sounds different than any other store I've ever been in (and I believe I've been in all the different types). Where's it at?

I miss working at Disney Store. Can't wait to get back there in August after my CP!
