Hi folks im trying to get to the world again next year for the 3rd year in a row and i need some help!

We have never used the dining plan as it didnt suit us but next year all going well we may go in September when Disney are offering Free Dining as it seems like a great deal!!!

So what im looking for is a real explanation of the Dining Plan and how it works?? We would be staying for 3 weeks and would stay at Pop for 1200 withou free dining or Riverside for €1900 with free dining, is it worth it??

Also anyone whose taken advantage of Free Dining in the past id love to hear your pros/cons for booking it! Thanx in advance :wave::wave:

Looking 4ward to hearing from you guys :sohappy:

Definitely worth it in this case. With only a difference of 600 you would spend way more than that on food. Since you only get 2 meals a day for free, if you are used to 3 then youd have you pay for that seperately, or you could just get a muffin or something and use a snack credit. I say pay a little more to stay at Riverside because in the end you will be saving.

Oh no 2 meals per day is loads!!! What does a meal consist of? How many courses?

Your gonna eat like kings! Make sure you get your reservations in early.
Our dining receipts totaled $2200.00 for 9 days. It's a steal!

Just a note, the OP was stating prices in British Pounds, not US Dollars. 600 Pounds (at current exchange rate) is about $1000.

Also keep an eye out for things like Annual Passholder specials. While Free Dining is almost always the better deal over a discounted hotel rate, it usually *isn't* a better deal at Deluxe resorts. Moderate resorts fall somewhere in the middle where it depends on how big of a percentage the discount is and what the room price is.

If you can get a good room rate, you might end up saving more money booking an AP rate room and paying full price to add on the Dining Plan. You just have to calculate it out yourself and see which is cheaper.

Also, with staying that long, if you definitely will be eating a Table Service meal every day, it could also help to look into Tables in Wonderland that gets you 20% off almost all Table Service locations in WDW. TiW can be purchased if you get an AP (only one adult in your party needs to get an AP to get TiW and an AP room rates). Combining an AP rate and TiW discount could potentially be the cheapest option.

EDIT: Just realized the OP quoted Euros and not Pounds, the exchange rate of which makes it about $900...

As of this year, per night of your stay you get
1 table service meal (includes entree, dessert, drink -- tip not included)
1 counter service meal (entree, dessert, drink)
1 snack (almost anything under $4, there's a lengthy list out there of what you can get)

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/me...09 Disney Dining Plan - Walt Disney World.pdf

For the free dining program he will have to stay at Moderate resort to get the Table service meal. Value resorts now offer 2 counter service meals daily instead of 1 table service and 1 counter service.

We were there last month, and we had upgraded from Pop to Caribbean Beach Resort in order to take advantage of Free Dining. It was SOOOO worth it. Aside from the fact that it was really nice to stay at a Moderate for the first time (for less money I might add), the DDP was great. Granted we would not have ordered 4 desserts with every meals if we weren't on the plan, but we figured out that we could order muffins or fruit that we could take back to the room for breakfast the next day. And yes, we paid for an occasional appetizer or alcoholic drink, but it was nice not to have to bring cash for most of our food. Also, since we spent a day at Universal, we used that day's credits to book a signature meal at the Brown Derby after Fantasmic. For us, it would have been worth it to BUY the meal plan, but getting it for free was gravy. Just make your ADRs early because places fill up quickly during the free dining promotions.

How it works is that you get 1 snack, 1 table service (sit down with a waitress), and 1 quick service (fast food) meal per night of your stay. Our trip was for 8 nights/8 days so each of us had 8 snacks, 8 table service, and 8 quick service meals for the trip...which broke down into 2 meals a day plus a snack, which I used to get a muffin for breakfast each morning, so all our bases were covered.

My husband and I had never used the dining plan until this year because 1) it's a ton of food and we would spend less paying as-you-go, and 2) my husband hates schedules and being tied down by a ton of reservations.

However, we went in September of this year and they were offering free dining, so it would have been idiotic to turn down free food. We weren't so sure about how it would all work out, but we ended up LOVING it. We had park hoppers and I made only one reservation per day, so it was the best of both worlds because I got a little structure, we got to try a lot of sit-down restaurants we otherwise wouldn’t have paid to eat at, and he didn't feel "tied" to a specific park because of where our reservation was. I think the free dining really helped us sort through the intimidating number of restaurants within WDW because we had nothing to lose. If we had a great meal, awesome! We paid $0 for a fabulous, romantic $175 meal at California Grill and a great $98 meal at Le Cellier. And when we had crappy meals (*cough* Crystal Palace), we didn’t have to walk away feeling angry that we wasted our money.

We don’t stay at the upper-echelon resorts, so free dining (as opposed to a room discount) is the better deal for us. From now on we’re going to try and vacation at times when it’s offered (we’re doing it again in December). I have to say though, DO NOT stay at a value resort during free dining – I would go ahead and pony up for Riverside. EVERYONE stays at the value resorts during free dining – you should have seen the bus stops this past September. There would literally be 10-15 people in line for all the other resorts, and HUNDREDS lined up for the All-Star busses. Yes, we got a 8-night vacation with free dining and park hoppers for the insane bargain price of $1400…but we decided that after this vacation it was worth the extra money to upgrade to a moderate in order to avoid the masses.

All that being said, I don’t think I’d ever PAY for the Disney dining plan. As long as it’s free, we’ll definitely use it and have a great time. But I would never purchase it because I couldn’t justify that amount of food or money. I know we’d feel compelled to overeat to make sure we got our money’s worth. But when the dining plan is free, I don’t feel pressured to force down dessert or order something other than water to drink.

Hope that helps!

:confused: We stayed at Pop this past September and had free dining? It wasn't quick service, it was the regular plan. Even if they changed it to Q.S. , you can just pay for the upgrade which is about $10.00 I believe.

There have been several different free dining promotions, and some of them have only offered the Quick Service plan for guests staying at value resorts. That tiered version of free dining seems to have been offered more often to UK residents than to US residents.

Upgrading to the regular plan would cost $10 per day per adult (10 and over), and $2 per day per child (9 and under).

Instead of saying 'The Disney Dining Plan - Please Help???' ,
we were saying 'The Disney Dining Plan - Please Help!!!'
when we tried it.

Never again. Took up too much time with fixed reservations that you had to get to. Also, for us, too much food- we just don't eat that much.

If the Dining Plan is 'free', then OK but I wouldn't pay for it again.

IMHO

I agree. I love getting free food, but would never pay for it, especially with 11 and 10 year old kids. I'd be paying $42 a day for each of them to eat maybe $15 worth of food.

Based on the $1000 US difference for 3 weeks, you're paying $48 US a day more to stay in a nicer hotel and eat 2 meals a day + a snack for each person. I'm not a dining plan person, but this seems like a steal. I would upgrade to the moderate...

Quick Service Dining Plan

I have seen many posts and sections on here about the plan. This year, with the free dining plan, we thought we give it a try. We just returned last night from our trip. Wow, do you ever get a lot of food. We had the quick service plan and it was incredible. I personally wouldn't go for the Upgrade dining plan where you get a sit down meal, one quick service and 1 snack as we don't want to waste the extra time booking the reservation and the time sitting, waiting, and ordering. Ours you get 2 quick service and 2 snacks each day. That was MORE then enough. We had to use extra up at the end. And the choice of food was huge. One meal we had in a place paid for itself easily. I remember seeing someone complain saying it was bad and that is was a joke in Downtown Disney. That was where we had our best meal and we went there 3 times!!! The meal we had there was almost like a sit down full meal so that is why we don't think it is necessary to upgrade. I think we gained a lot weight with all the food choices. The meals were huge and not like your junk fast food either. With chicken, ribs, subs, spagetti, pasta, pizza, etc... Even the desserts that were included were good including brownies, carrot cake, ice cream, and even creme bruile... Will definetly do it again. You will end up using the extra amounts of snacks at the end and can use them to get gifts to bring back like bags of caramel popcorn, cookies, treats and such... Whoever in one of the posts said it as poor and no choice obviously did not know what they were doing. People also said using the dining plan slowed things down. The ones on the dining plan were the FASTEST through the line!!! It was the people paying with cash and credit that slowed things down. It was so easy to use. The main items have an icon, and follow the guide that they give you and it will be a piece of cake. They just scan the card and it prints and your done... Can't make it any easier...:sohappy:
