The Debate Over The Biggest Blockbuster Of The Summer Comes To An End!

However, it may likely be the recipient of over-flow from sold out Pirates performances across the country, which will help beef up its second weekend.

I agree. I think Shrek and Spidy will profit from filled theaters showing PotC. That's one of the reasons why I think that Shrek has a higher chance of taking the number 2 spot (more kid friendly)...than Spidy. I'm with Nemo...no way its falling to number three on its second weekend.

For what it's worth ...

I'll be seeing "Pirates" more than once, to be sure, but I've been reading the reviews on the wire while goofing off here in the office (:D ) and they haven't been very kind. One in particular was quite savage. One complaint shared by all is that it's too long.

I'll make up my own mind, thank you very much, but how many will read these and pass on it altogether?

I read an article the other day about how the critics are going to bash the movie just because they know it's going to be popular and because they don't want it getting nominated for an Oscar.

edit: All the reviews I have read have been positive. They all say it's enjoyable and better than the second. The only negative things I have read about it is that it's too long and there's too much going on.

The critics have said that all of the Priates movies have been too long. They have been the length they needed to tell the story the movie makers intended, and movie goers have loved those stories and will love the one told in the 3 hours of "At World's End."

But you are basing your prediction strictly from your own opinion...nothing more. I am sure there are many, many movie goers that do not see Shrek as the "weaker of the three". You just are not going to see Shrek drop over 80% at the box office this weekend.

I'm not basing it on just my opinion. Shrek The Third has wowed audiences far less than Spider Man 3. A strong opening weekend doesn't prove a movie is good, it just proves that Dreamworks did a good job of promoting the movie.

Nearly every movie goer this weekend will try to get into a theatre showing "At World's End" and those that don't I believe are more likely to chose to see "Spider Man 3" than "Shrek The Third."

But like I said, on Sunday, we'll see who is right.

Well I give it an A :ROFLOL: :p

Not that I'm a critic but I stopped paying attention to them, I went and enjoyed the movie so much and to me, that's all that matters.

I 100% agree. These critics don't know anything. They have know purpose. You should see a movie because you want to, and not what someone else has to say.

If you read alot of the reviews, it seems that they're all a little too slow to follow the movie. Maybe major media outlets should hire critics who can keep up with the rest of the world!

I would wager the critics probably try harder than the average fan. Most people (not the diehards) are probably more interested in seeing swordfights, laughing at Johnny Depp and keeping a general track of the plot than in putting too much thought into how every scene advances each narrative thread.

I agree. Sometimes, I truly do wonder if they even see the movie. I think they send their friends, and get them to tell them about the movie. Then they just write up some quick article and publish it like they're the final authority on what is cool and what is not.

I have always believed that critics are just bitter people who could not make it in the business......
Agree 100% with everything here. You know something is off when all the critic reviews are negative and 99% of the movie goers love it.

The first one got pretty good reviews, as I recall, and I liked it. Reviews for the second one weren't so great, and in my opinion, neither was the movie.

I don't think this is just a case of critics panning the sequels because they're too cool for the party.

At World's End has an average user rating (no critics involved) of 5.4/10 over at metacritic.com at the moment, by the way.

Sorry there, Captain Jack...looks like you are probably wrong on all your predictions.

$17 million confirmed for Thursday, but early estimates for Friday are pretty low.

Friday estimate.

Shrek is still way ahead of Spider-Man, as well.

There was absolutely no chance whatsoever that Spidy 3 would make more than Shrek 3 this weekend. The only way it could have happened is if all the Shrek 3 prints had been destroyed over the week.

A strong opening weekend doesn't prove a movie is good, it just proves that Dreamworks did a good job of promoting the movie.

This is true for every major studio. A lot of pressure has been put on opening weekend numbers since most movies fade away after a couple weeks. Disney falls into this category as well...Pirates is opening on a record number of theatres and this movie will secure the top spot of best opening.

I've brought up Titanic before and I'll do it again...since the quote was a good one. Titanic did not have a good opening weekend, the promotion of the movie was okay....the word of mouth is what catapulted that movie into the top 10 grossing movies of all time. The only movie in the top ten released in the past 20 years. People dispise that movie now, but what it did was truly remarkable - minus a great opening weekend.

Friday's estimates are in and they fall well short of Spiderman 3 and Dead Man's Chest. Even if you include Thursday nights tickets AWE does not beat Spiderman 3. Disney may be looking at a disapointment

Looks like $43 million for POTC on Friday...that hurts. It is going to have major trouble even making Spidey type opening weekend numbers in it's first 5days. Sadly, that could spell trouble all the way around for POTC...who knows, maybe everyone is waiting for Potter in July.
