Challenge 4: It Ain't Over Till It's Over

The ESPN Wide World of Sports is one of the many unique and different offerings WDW has outside of the parks. However, we feel its concept really hasn't quite made full use of the potential it has, which is why a full refurbishment of the complex is warranted. Starting in mid-late 2016 after the completion of Disney Springs, ESPN WWoS will receive some major changes as it becomes the ESPN Sports and Entertainment District!
This new area will be nothing like what's there now. It will become a whole new area for families to check out and enjoy their afternoons/evenings, much like DTD/DS, or maybe even spend the whole day there with the many experiences and attractions it has to offer. With updated shopping/dining, brand new sports simulations, updated fields/courts, etc., bus transportation to and from all Walt Disney World Resort Hotels, and the inclusion of more Disney references/characters, this refurbishment has it all!
Sports Simulators:
- Surf Simulator: Where guests can go for a "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" like Lilo and Stitch.
- Tour De France: A new kind of exercise bike where guests are seated in front of a screen that makes it seem like they're riding down the streets of Paris.
- Matterhorn Rock Wall: Basically your typical rock wall, with a bit of Matterhorn theming to it. Be careful as you climb, you might spot a yeti!
Shopping:
Shopping is going to be a huge part of the experience here, whether for purchasing memorabilia or new sports equipment. Disney will be partnering with many companies to bring some of the best in the industry to the ESPN Sports and Entertainment District! It will feature top names such as Under Armour and Nike, stores for some great, modern equipment such as Garmin and Fitbit, and even a Gatorade shop similar to Club Cool!
Below is a poster that'll give you a sneak preview of some of the awesome stores that will be entering the complex during the refurbishment.
Dining:
As with any entertainment complex, one of the most integral components needed for success is good dining. And the newly refurbished ESPN Sports and Entertainment District features a wide aray of restaurants for different types of food and different budgets, all inspired by the many sports and activities that are represented in the complex.
-With this being a district themed around ESPN, it only makes sense to have a bit of theming to the headquarters. The Seasons cafe, the largest company cafeteria on property in the headquarters in Connecticut, will be recreated for guests to get all sorts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
-There are so many different water based sports represented here, which makes a seafood restaurant like you'd find by the shore a perfect fit! At SeaShack, a quick service location, find delectable on the go snacks/small meals including fish and chips, coconut shrimp, and cool beverages. Or, if your in the mood for a full meal, the table service restaurant The Ocean View House offers more high end seafood specialties. What makes The Ocean View House special though? Inside, it has an atmosphere of the beach at night, with low lighting and a "window" overlooking the sun setting on the ocean (similar to the snowy windows in Be Our Guest).
-Baseball is America's sport, and one of the things that always comes to mind when you think of it are the food and snacks! In a small baseball themed area themed to the road outside Fenway park in Boston, there will be several hot dog stands and food trucks selling burgers, popcorn, peanuts, and of course, hot dogs! In addition, the famous Game On restaurant built into Fenway Park will be recreated as a lunch/dinner table service restaurant for guests to enjoy it's amazing food and baseball themed atmosphere.
-At the heart and center of the district will be The Olympian Table, a restaurant with food samplings from many different cultures around the world. It will have Olympic theming, and overall celebrate how sports are a big part of many cultures and that we can come together to enjoy and compete them with each other.
Meet and Greets:
Throughout the refurbished complex, guests will be able to meet their favorite Disney characters all dressed in their "sports" outfits. For example, Lilo and Stitch will be located next to the surf simulator. In addition, characters not featured in a simulator attractions (such as Daisy, Pluto, etc) will meet near the entrance plaza of the refurbished complex.
Streetmosphere/Nighttime Entertainment:
Throughout the day, street performers will add lots of fun energy to the area. Many will perform really cool tricks, such as balancing/dribbling soccer balls, shooting an arrow from a bow to a really small target, martial arts demonstrations, or basketball free throws into difficult hoops. These additions will give lots of entertainment to the guests as they explore the complex.
At night, guests can line up in Champion Stadium, also refurbished, and watch a (scripted) 15-minute comical and exciting baseball game, with one team being professional players, and the other being some of your favorite Disney characters! Who will win the intense game? Find out along with Goofy as your announcer!
There will be some other minor yet important aspects of this refurbishment, too. All of the fields used for special events or activities will be refurbished and maintained more regularly with more people enjoying them. In addition, because there will be more people here, the infrastructure, such as sidewalks, parking, and other things will be included in the refurbishment. Lastly, as mentioned earlier, bus transportation will be provided from all resort hotels.
Overall, the newly-refurbished ESPN Sports & Entertainment District will have a lot to offer in terms of family entertainment, exciting and fun attractions, and awesome nightlife. With this overhaul, the WWoS will go from being that "extra" thing in WDW that few get the opportunity to enjoy, to being considered another necessary part of any trip. Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoyed our proposal!
