Some had never been to WDW, some not since 1978, some not since late 90s, some had been last year. One had only visited in utero.

Late in the summer, Pop pop surprised us all by announcing his plan to treat all of us to a trip to WDW. He was hopeful of getting reservations to the Polynesian, and as Designated Disney Expert I was put on the case.

Of course, it was too late to secure Polynesian rooms for our scheduled trip, Nov 6 thru 11, due to the large influx of other Njans enjoying a school break and the mobs of Soap Opera fans. Through repeated tricky maneuvers on the Disney website, we were able to get 4 rooms at AS Movies, despite the fact that, over the phone, they were “completely booked.” Despite repeated attempts, we were unable to “trade up”, which gave us a clue to how crowded Disney would be during our trip. We also failed in 4 phone attempts to get Cinderella Breakfast reservations, but did get PS for 4 at the EPCOT Princess Breakfast.

Gma and Pop pop were to travel with us on Delta out of LaGuardia (best nonstop rates to MCO for both the NY area family AND the Philadelphia area family). The other 2 families were flying out of Baltimore (Air Tran) and Portland, ME (US Airways). All were to arrive on Wednesday November 6th. (After my first trip to Disney as a Dad, I’ve planned to arrive the day before we attack the parks so we are rested and ready to go).

Best-laid plans and all, a rainy Wednesday arrived and Gma and Pop pop were a bit late arriving due to a flat tire. But thanks to a PA State policeman, they arrived in the nick of time. We got to LGA airport to find our plane delayed. NJKid was able to complete her homework with enough time for me to lug her heavy books back across the highway to the parking lot and the car. (Yeah!)

Instead of arriving around 4, we were landing around 6 PM. Out my side of the plane you could see the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom! I had been joking with NJKid about seeing Disney out her side, but it turns out we had the view. Without the fireworks you would have never seen it, but it was cool.

Fabio from Tiffany picked us up in a van; we made a lightning fast stop at a Publix grocery store, and proceeded to AS Movies. Any momentum we had built at that point dissipated as we had the slowest check in EVER. A short, but s l o w moving line, and it took about ½ hour to check in once we reached a CM. Some of us went to the food court, had dinner, went back, ordered more dinner for line-waiters and still were finished before check in was completed. We had hoped for Toy Story or Dalmatians, but ended up on the third floor of Love Bug facing the parking lot and back of AS Music.

Luggage delivery worked fairly well, and a phone call got us a refrigerator in a NY minute.

The others arrived late in the evening, but on schedule, and had their own separate Tiffany cars to the hotel.

Although it was thought that the ME and MD people were arriving too late for them to join us for Early Entry, after ME heard about it they wanted to join in. Maine kid was asked where she wanted to go more than anywhere in the world (trip was a surprise) she responded, “Paris!”

Nov 7, Day Two

The NJ clan was up early, as usual. When it turned out the Maine wanted to go early, Pop Pop decided to phone the Maryland group awake to join in. Everyone visited the Food Court for the obligatory Mickey Waffles or grits. Many of the adults bought the mugs. All aboard a bus for the MK. NJKid who already has most of the autographs that are easily obtained was surprised to see 2 who she hadn’t seen before, Wendy (Peter Pan) and Clopin (Hunchback of Notre Dame). She nabbed their signatures before most of us hopped aboard Dumbo. Brother and I were in the ‘first’ elephant, the Camera Dumbo. Peter Pan was closed, so some rode the Carousel (NJMom had already obtained FPs for Winnie the Pooh). After a nostlagic ride on It’s A Small World (some had actually ridden it at the NY World’s Fair), we headed to Pooh. The New-To-Fastpass people were impressed with the process. Then everyone headed to the Haunted Mansion, which was a little scary for the tired 5 year olds. The MD folks had to head back to Fantasyland to revive the spirits of their kid. The rest of us (except for G-ma) rode BTMRR and then Splash Mt (with G-ma). For the first time ever, we knew everyone in our ‘log’ so we bought the picture.

The NJ crowd peeled off to Tomorrowland for a ride on the TTA, and then a FP trip on Buzz and Space Mt. We all met up at Plaza Pavilion where some of us enjoyed the Stack Sandwich while others ate other items from there or from Casey’s Corner or a turkey leg.
Just when Pop pop had returned from a trip back to Love Bug to do some business, we all headed right back to the Fantasia pool.

After the break, we headed to the Studios. We all enjoyed Muppetvision, then most of us took a Star Tour. Then the NJ 3 Rock N Roller coaster, then just NJMom and I did a spectacular Tower of Terror after dark with a pretty moon. Creepier and prettier at night!
We also found the “Evil Tower U R Doomed” letters as we were assigned the left library.

After a quick Catalina Eddies’ cold pizza for me, we picked up “Guest of Honor” personalized badges for the girls. NJKid wore hers everyday and was occasionally greeted by name. Mainekid wore hers once in a while when she remembered, and Maryland kid never wore hers because she was afraid people might ask her questions.

Nov 8, Day Three

As usual, NJ and G-ma were up first. After another AS Movies food court breakfast, all except the ME 3some made an early AK bus. The Mainers were just a second or two too late and were turned away from the full bus. This was Early Entry day, and there were long lines at the gates. Bre’r Rabbit was out front, along with more regularly seen characters. We cellphoned the Mainers once we got through the gate, and they told us they could see us from their vantage point in line.

We all rode the Safari, around 8:15 AM. This was one of the best safaris ever, a lot of animals out to be seen. Giraffes were blocking the Jeep in front of us, a truck full of yummies was driven out to entice the giraffes off the road. It was here that the Maine Dad left his AS Movies mug in the check your belongings net. Then we headed to Chester and Hester’s, where the taller people rode the Primeval Whirl, which we actually enjoyed (sorry, anti-Dinorama folks) while the shorter people rode the Triceratops Spin with either G-Ma or the MD mom. Then the little girls went to the Boneyard, while some of us Primevaled again with FPs. NJKid , NJMom and the men rode Dinosaur, which malfuntioned right at the end. It stopped in the middle of the big finish. NJKid and I then waited in the standby line to ride again, while the others went off to see Tarzan show. NJKid ducked and hid most of the ride both times, but claimed to really like it.

We all met back at the pool. NJ lunched with food from the food court. NJKid picked up some of those pool balls, which were almost out of stock.

Then most of us went to the MK (the Mainers did more at the AK and were running behind). MD Sister and her kid’s ticket were left back in the room, so NJMom sprang into action. She talked to one of the higher ups at the window, who was able to check our previous ticket use over the preceding years and found that this was the first time we had ever had such a problem, so they let her in. Didn’t know they kept track of such things, but apparently some people try to pull a scam. They actually gave her 2 tickets that would allow her to park hop for the rest of the day.

We visited the Pirates of the Caribbean, which was a bit scary for the 5 year old. To cheer her up, some got in line for Aladdin’s carpets. I went to try the famous Dole Whip we’ve read about over the years, and ran into the Maine folks waiting to meet Baloo and King Louie. After the carpets, we all moseyed over to Pecos Bills to see if the rest of the guests had left anything in the fixins bar. Then BTMRR for all but MD females and G-ma. Then those that rode BTMRR moseyed over to Splash, which we allowed to ride 3 straight times until the fireworks went off. Great fun! NJ gang and the MEKid were the last 4 on one bus.

SAT Nov 9th Day 4

NJKid and I were up fetching coffee early and saw a rabbit hopping around. On the way back, saw that rabbit or another one hopping some more, near a “Jack Rabbit” sign related to races that Herbie the Love Bug was in.

Another Mickey waffle and then a standing room bus to Studios (first day of Super Soap weekend, unfortunately for us non-soapies). It was the NJ crowd, the MD father and G-ma. All but G-ma did the Rock n Roller coaster, then Njkid and I did it again. She was wearing her name badge so the CM noticed her both times. Then Maine Dad joined us for a 3rd ride. Then Tower of Terror for the 3 dads, as NJMom graciously peeled off when NJKid chickened out in the preshow room. Then NJMom and I were allowed to ride after switching kid to the other guys. Then Pop Pop joined the NJ parents and the ME dad for another drop sequence. Then 3 of the men and the NJ Kid did the Rock and Roller coaster with FPs. (Do you get the idea that NJ Kid has a favorite ride?)

Everyone eventually showed up and we headed to the Great Movie Ride (Cowboy side). Again, a little scary for the littlest ones.

We had made a PS for 50s Prime Time Cafe at the start of the trip...table for 11?

The NJ crowd had so enjoyed a meal with Uncle Dave two years before. We sent pictures to add to his photo book filled with Dave and his various “relatives”. Last year we were told Dave only worked nights, so we didn’t expect much. Told our server was Terry, we had just sat done when Dave himself came over and greeted us and took over our table. Nicknames were bestowed on some, Fuzzy, Sparky, Princess, Pumpkin Noodle, and Sugarbooger. Some of us who went with it had a good time, can’t speak for all. Dave told us the sad story of how his photo book was taken from him a little while ago, so we never saw how our pictures fit in. We promised to send pictures from both visits...check a separate thread I started if you have any pictures from the past to help him out. I told him how he can find raves about him on the internet and directed him to Intercot.

Then I had the idea to ask him if he knew anyone that could help us add seats to our Princess Breakfast reservation the next day. He made some calls, and lo and behold our seating for 4 turned into a seating for 8.

We all made our way back for the swim break of the day. We heard on the bus that the Studios had to be closed to more guests for a while during the day due to reaching capacity.

Some of us headed back to the Magic Kingdom, just in time for the start of the 1st Spectromagic parade of the night (MK was open till 11 with 2 parades at night and fireworks.) We took the train to Toontown to avoid the parade and crowd. Sugarbooger got Cinderella’s autograph and actually spoke to the Princess, ever so briefly.

We met with the others and rode the TTA. Near the end of the ride the fireworks went off, so we watched them from Tomorrowland. Then some of us rode the racecars while the rest took pictures. Then those of us who skipped the first parade caught the second with Pop Pop providing Popcorn. We found a decent spot 10 minutes til parade in front of the popcorn wagon in the circle around the Walt stature. The NJ Dad, kid and grandparents then wandered the park looking for a short ride line, finding none, giving up and leaving.

Part 3

SUN Nov 10th Day 5

NJ crowd up early for a snack of muffins and a delicious blueberry crumb cake to tide us over till Princess Breakfast.

NJ 3 some then took a SRO bus at 715 over to the MK. Despite having a man try to cut into the line at the gate, then getting peeved that people called him on it, it was fun to wait with most of the other folks. NJKid and I met Big Al and Peter Pan (finally), rode Space Mt (walkon, of course), and twice on Buzz. I had gotten two FPs for Buzz before realizing the return time was too late for us to use, so I donated to a father and daughter who rode in front of us. Back to meet NJMom, we killed some time in one of those gift shops right by the gate. I asked the CM if he had anything that said Walt Disney World on it, but he didn’t know I was kidding. I said I was trying to ask the stupidest question ever, he replied that “What time is the 3 o’clock parade?” was his personal favorite.

NJMom showed up and we monorailed over to EPCOT, where we spotted most of the rest of the group as we circled Future World from the monorail. We had a planned meet at the Test Track FP area so we could all get FPs for after breakfast. Some of us did do the singles line, where if we had better negotiations with the CM could have mostly rode together in one of the half empty cars. Oh well, still fun, even with strangers. Then yours truly and all the females headed over to the Princess breakfast. Very cute, the little girls were stunned by the number of princesses wandering around. The food was OK, potatoes were excellent, it was certainly filling. Althought it took a while for the first Princess to come to our table, they all eventually did. There’s a wrangler to make sure everyone gets a turn and it seemed to work on our visit. Snow White, Mary Poppins, Mulan, Aurora, and Belle were the Princesses on duty during our visit. NJKid had 3 of the autographs already, but violated her own “No Duplicates” policy with the rarely enforced “Princess Breakfast Exception”. This time Mulan was dressed as a female, so it was really only 2 repeats.

The other men met us after, and we all rode Maelstrom, then had to dash over to Test Track before the FPs expired. All but MDMom and NJMom rode this time, all had a good time, even G-ma. Then we all made our own way back to the hotel, some stopping for ice cream and Spaceship Earth (some had ridden it first thing and skipped it).

More swimming, while Pop pop watched his beloved Eagles lose to the Colts formerly of Baltimore. We had great room clean up by Maria, who made quite the displays, including a “hammock” full of toys in one room, strung between the bed lights.

Brother and I dashed to MK for Buzz FPs pickup, then exited park to meet up with others. His wife and daughter were delayed, so we tried to reenter park and were stopped by turnstile. Turns out they stop if the same ticket is used 4 minutes apart (we were leaving and reentering to meet various groups of family members). Turns out the 2 Maine ladies were delayed getting hair wraps and a long wait for another bus at AS Movies.

NJKid was given 1 FP by a stranger and did Buzz by herself! Then the rest joined us for a 11 guest Buzzfest. Some left to meet Ariel, others used FPs for Space Mt, then 4 of us used the second Buzz FPs to ride again (the complex figuring of which FPs to get in what quantity and how to play the Next FP time schedule was a constant mental exercise during the trip). We then railroaded over to Splash, where I was handed 4 FPs for the ride, but ME Kid refused to ride without her Dad, so he rode with the 3 little ones. I dashed to meet the others at Pecos Bill’s, but they got the last hamburgers of the day as they were closing (about an hour before the park). Some of us then got on BTMRR while the rest went to Small World. Although the non-experts had planned to meet again at Pecos Bills (?) we luckily all met up on accident at Peter Pan, which was down for about half of our trip. We all rode it as our last ride, then exited to our 4th MK fireworks of our trip. NJKid and I dashed around the castle (spotting a couple in the process of getting engaged) and made it to Casey’s while everyone was watching the fireworks. Enjoyed a traditional park closing hot dog and fries (I think I ate there 4 times during our 1974 trip, and it was DD’s first ever hot dog there a few years back). Back to the hotel and collapse.

Mon Nov 11th Departure Day

Breakfast Pizza for me, not bad! On way out, spotted ME Dad and kid waiting for pool to open (later flight for them). Mickey’s fountains turned on right at 8 AM so they hopped in the empty pool. Another kid saw them and said, Look Dad, Everyone’s in the Pool!

The MD crowd’s Tiffany car and our Tiffany van were both there, we said Why use 2 vehicles and we all hopped in the van with Fabio, our driver on the way out. MD Kid said how about one last ride..Haunted Mansion, which had earlier terrified her, so we all had quite a giggle. Flight home a bit bumpy and late due to storms in the Northeast. Family actually saw one of the Soap stars in the airport in NY and asked each other how they liked their Disney trip. (I don’t know her name, but she’s David Hasselhoff’s ex-wife, according to those in the know).

Things we learned:

Make plans FAR in advance if you want Polynesian village.

Don’t go during Veteran’s Day, NJ school break and Super Soap weekend.

Buy lots more fruit, bread and peanut butter on grocery stop.

If you bring a cellphone, might as well bring the charger too. And setup a voicemailbox before you leave.

Don’t leave your tickets in the room, and write down the info on the back in case you do and give it to the reliable one in your group.

Sit on the left side of the log at Splash Mountian.

Always take the midday break.

Thanks for reading.
