The 60th Anniversary of Disneyland: The Reality of it All

More live action scenes than 1.0 unfortunately.

Not sure on the animated specifics just yet.
I'd expect a lot of live action Walt from all his TV appearances, tbh.

I still don't like that bloated clip show World of Color. I don't get the fascination with it. A huge disappointment.

Content wise, yeah, nor do I. But the technology and spectacle blows me away every time.

I don't think anyone has really said what WOC is going to be made up of - since it looks like it's going to be Walt-centric, I'd expect a lot of that and legacy stuff - Mickey, etc.

AND OLAF

*just kidding*

Disney wanted to create buzz, I guess. But I think most people riding in its current state are just confused by the illuminated lenticular window.

Nah.. Either they don't notice because they simply don't ride it often like we do -- or they do ride it often and have some idea something is brewing in there. Give Disney a little more credit. :)

As for the PR, got to imagine there are a billion things going on at any given time within the company that have varying levels of priority. Hatbox is cool and important to us geeks, but in the grand scheme of things, is really just a fun little crowd pleaser and not something worthy of heavy PR muscle.

My guess is they'll simply have him show up there one day for us to discover -- have us all go crazy on social media about it, and then follow-up with a proper announcement/behind-the-scenes. That's what I'd do.

Oh for sure it is a tiny addition in the grand scheme of things. The problem is the only people it will really appeal to already know it's coming and are just annoyed by Disney pretending like it isn't. The whole blog post thing - guess what it is (even though you already know) and maybe we'll tell you! - and then they didn't say anything. o_O

MiceChat releases their news before they ever get close. Here they have an opportunity to engage the core fanbase on social media and do something fun - instead it's just frustrating. Lame. But "lame" describes the entire WDPR social media policy. They blow at the whole thing and repeatedly muck up despite paying untold thousands of dollars to "consultants" and spending untold thousands on mommy bloggers with 20 Twitter followers.

Yeah, but the reality is that the Parks Blog (or any company owned property) doesn't really cater to us. They're not dummies...they know where we get our news and updates and know there's no way they can compete with those sources as an official news outlet for the company. Therefore, they don't even attempt to be that and go after a wider, more casual audience and style their content as such.

We know the Hatbox Ghost is coming. They know we know. Does the 30-something mom in Alabama who's pumped about the Frozen/Maelstrom makeover and checks the parks blog daily (like we check Micechat) know or even care? Probably not.

I think that's a mistake on their part though. How many casual vacationers skim the DPB each day? Most of what they post is so obscure and fan-related (you can't have big news every day) I can't imagine that "normal guests" are clicking there every day to just see what's new.

Your point about the Alabama mom is an important one though - WDW has much more of these casual "bad decision" fans ("Why would they tear down the hat?!?!?") than DLR does and the audiences for each resort are not compatible despite "DISNEY PARKS" branding. They're really at sea, and from someone who works in PR, they've done a horrible job.

Each post has to be run through legal, so the result is a sterile, uninformative, fun-free blog full of Duffy pics.

We may have to agree to disagree, but they've handled everything about the 60th announcements very poorly and as a result, have just annoyed their core base. Never a great result.

I'm not even *that* much of a local, but the pass has basically paid for itself in a visit every two or three months for just a weekend.
Totally agree, I live in Las Vegas and have the premium AP. I make it down for a 3 day getaway every couple of months and it's a huge money saver. I spent 18 days at DL last year so it averaged out to about $35 a day for my pass. I probably spend another $65 a day on food, snacks, and merchandise though so it's still not cheap but the pass does make it affordable. Without the pass I'd probably only make 1 or 2 trips a year.

Definitely don't disagree with you... Guess I'm just too much of a realist and accept that's how things go when you're dealing with a behemoth company like Disney with so much red tape and opinions on how things should be handled.

As a supergeek, I'm just happy to have so many other reputable sources to get my news from and really don't let myself get bothered about how Disney handles things. In the end, anyone who really wants to know what's up knows what's up.

Just to put things in perspective, Universal is well into construction on a rumored King Kong ride at IOA. There is a ginormous show building already up. They haven't even made a peep about it...

They've lost control of the narrative and stuff like this just proves they have no idea how to handle the interwebz.

Agreed! The Parks Blog is a boring wasteland most days, and they have totally lost the 60th PR campaign to unofficial blogs. Miceage Updates have done more to explain what's coming to the majority of people, with more targeted insight from folks like you @GiveMeTheMusic on message boards like this where a relatively small number of fans convene and chat.

I don't know if it's TDA to blame for this sloppy mess, or if it's the Parks Blog people holed up in Celebration, Florida cubicle farms. Or maybe it's a combo of those two ham-handed outfits. But it's obvious the PR and Social Media team has lost the message on this one.

Luckily, the sloppy PR hacks living in cubicles aren't involved with the actual creative and operations teams in Glendale and Anaheim who will truly be the ones to bring the 60th Anniversary to life for Disneyland visitors.

While I'm not irritated with TDA now, I do wonder why it it took to JAN. 28, 2015 to come out with the big Entertainment for the 60th, when the 50th entertainment along with its art and other things coming to DLR and around the world was announced one full year before the 50th start date. Heck!, FOF was announced on the Parks Blog before May 2013, and it's not even an anniversary parade! The 59th was a BIG letdown for 60th news except for the logo which is nice mind you. I was worried of a "little info event" when the parks blog siad on Jan. 27, that "some" info was coming out the 28th. I figured it would be the obvious: announcing the Fantasyland Upgrades since almost all of Fantasyland was close on the 28th, along with maybe a preview of Merch. Then DL would keep us drooling for Entertainment news till who knows when. Thank Goodness that didn't happen and we got overlays for SBC and CCT!

Regarding Fantasyland, forgive me but Isn't it obvious to just about everyone that Fantasy land us getting upgrades or at least, being seriously worked on with most everything closed for weeks and months? Does DL really need to announce that? I do think DL should announce a new yeti for the Matterhorn if they plan on putting a new on in there. I'll be shocked if the Matterhorn Star is announced before May 22. I would expect them to wait on that until their Christmas plans. Whatever Christmas they plan on having in 2015.

Forgot about MTP. I'm shocked that DCA is staying with the May 14th/15th End Date for FTN and maybe more? You would think Guest reactions to Frozen Fun would have some impact on May 15th. Unless The 15th is saved for 60th surprises??? I don't see the Frozen Pre Parade before Soundsational running away in May, IMO.

Any 60th news I forgot to mention?

The show would have been a bazillion times better if they went with the original story-driven show that Steve Davison pitched.

I'd like to guess what clips Walt-themed WoC show will present.

I'll be shocked if the opening speech is excluded. I'm also guessing bits of the Disneyland intro will be included.
