The 60th Anniversary of Disneyland: The Reality of it All

So early next year then.

I mean it would need to fit into the existing parade - Star Wars is not a fit for Soundsational, which doesn't even have any Pixar units. If a new parade premieres that Star Wars would fit into, then it will be in the lineup, but there isn't a parade at the resort currently that it would fit into.

I don't know where that rumor came from, but I never bought into it.
I believe Miceage posted the Matterhorn star rumor last year or even the year before that. They have since said it won't happen...Disneyland Forever made that challenging since the Matterhorn is used as a canvas for projections.

My issue with Paint the Night is that they run it every night. I'd like for them to switch to weekends only.
Why is that a problem? Can you imagine how much worse it would be if people could only see it two nights a week? The park would be flooded with AP's & guests cramming the sidewalks 4 hours early.

I think the star would still be doable with the projections. What makes it impossible are the flames shooting out of the top.

He looks like he wants to destroy the castle.

On a TOTALLY random side note. I was watching a video of WOC:C and noticed what potential the show had. The opening and finale are amazing and the animation and disneyland clips are great. They literally could take out the Star Wars seven clip and let it go clip and have a pretty solid show..not the best...but somethint pretty darn good. Anyway yea...sorry

It would have been pretty darn good if Disney executives had stayed out of the way and let the shows creative team do its job. This is the third WOC show they've meddled with and damaged as a result, this time arguably causing the most damage. Incidentally, there are three WOC shows.

Wasn't the original WOC supposed to be just the Walt era movies before Iger intervened to make it more modern?

Oh the executive muddling is so obvious in the shows. I mean when scenes like let it go just randomly pop in for no reason, you know it was shoved in. If removed, the show would have flowed much better.

I'm not sure World of Color can be salvaged, anyway. It's just a boring clip show with water and lights. I doubt that's going to change. People eat it up, even though Disney's just throwing crap up there at the mist screens. The masses adore the Frozen and Star Wars trailer segments.

The original WOC included an Alice segment that was just as long as say, the Mermaid segment, as well as a short Hercules segment. Those were deleted and the order of scenes changed significantly. If you listen to the original score for the show (search on YouTube) you can hear how the show was SUPPOSED to go and it flows so much better.

I don't know if Iger axed Alice because it's an older film. I've heard that before but don't know where it came from or if it's true. I just know at the last-ish minute Iger personally intervened to change the original show. He has a lot of experience in water shows. *eyeroll*

World of Color 1.0 and it's variations (it had many changes over the course of its life) was quite delightful and when viewed from the optimum positions was breathtaking. It's still at the top or near the top of my favorite Nighttime Spectaculars (also loved Remember Dreams Come True at DL and the far too short lived Magic, Music, and Mayhem at MK).

World of Color - Celebrate is simply a mess.

I'm a big fan of Davison's work; but, even I'll acknowledge that this show gets SO MUCH wrong in the use of the technology and story telling available. It's almost as if the Celebrate team didn't understand what worked really well in WoC 1.0 and what didn't work well. Celebrate amplifies the shortcomings of 1.0 and reduces down the areas where it got things right.

The main issue with both shows are when they become "too flat". What this unfortunately means is that when the mist screens are out and it is relying on projections to dominate the performance, the exceptional potential of the fountain tech can't shine. If you think back to 1.0, the least impressive sequences were those that pulled up the mist screen "landscape" for extended periods and the fountains in front and back were put into support duty with very little dynamic action. This landscape of mist and projections dominates Celebrate. I recently went through my pictures from my August/September trip and it was shocking how many sequences of Celebrate use the exact same 3 mist screen with a couple of side fountains arrangement. 1.0 was much more dynamic in the fountains firing from the front to the back and in a much wider array of shapes, sizes, and get this... colors. So, odd to focus on the use of color in a show called World of Color. Celebrate at times feels like a water based version of going to a drive-in movie. Very flat and 2-D.

The other thing that jumps out at me with Celebrate is that it has no build up or climax in the use of the technology available. From the very opening of the show, it throws everything out on display (like the flame launchers) so it never gets the chance to "build" to anything. 1.0 did a far better job of creating those moments (like the first time the fountains jumped to full height and the first use of fire).

That's just the technical deficiencies in my opinion. Thematically, the whole celebrate DLR (but mostly Disneyland) thing seems better suited to Disneyland park and not DCA - especially for this year. It's almost like the obvious choice in giving DL an upgraded Remember, which celebrates the history of Disneyland resort, and give DCA an upgraded 1.0 (which celebrates Disney cinema) seemed like it was too expected - so the conscious decision was made to cross those streams no matter how awkward it would feel. Personally, I find the celebrate Disneyland aspect of the show to be confusing as it kind of goes against the entire purpose of DCA the park... which is to pull guests away from Disneyland. "Here's all the great stuff from Disneyland... maybe you should go over there and visit." Good idea... I think I will.

As it stands now, Celebrate only hits its stride in the great post show.
