The “Was It Puke In the Parking Lot Good?” TR: A Trip of Excess-Sept. 29-October 7

This is my first ever TR and our third trip to WDW since 2007. If you want some background info on me and my family, I direct you to my Pre-TR at

This trip was kinda funky....just different than our other trips. @ShookieJones discussed this is his TR also...something was off...we still had fun, but things were weird and our schedule was off the whole trip.

The title for this TR "A Trip of Excess" comes from too much rain, too much food, and too hot. The "puke in the parking lot good"...well, you're just gonna have to read on to find out where that came from!

Now, without further ado....onto the TR!!

Day One- September 29:

We made our reservations for this trip in November of 2011, so our trip countdown began in the mid-300 days. I rented DVC points from David's DVC Rentals (shameless promotion) and in order to get the resort we wanted (Boardwalk Villas) we HAD to book as far out as possible. Food & Wine Festival began the weekend we arrived, so the EPCOT resort hotels were in hot demand.

Regardless of the near 344 days I had to get ready for our trip, I still didn't pack until two days before we left! I know, I know...this site is full of obsessive planners and people who pack nearly a month before they leave...I am a slacker and a first class procrastinator, what can I say?? In my defense, I did have a WDW box in my closet in which I had been depositing the WDW specific items that we were taking (ponchos, cross-body bag, stickers, travel size stuff).

Anyhoo, I began packing on Wednesday night...we were leaving Friday at 5:00, so yes, it was last minute.

We had been saving our change since last November when we planned the trip. We keep our change in Simply Orange bottles that we "Disneyfy". We managed to fill three jars and when we took them to the bank Thursday, we had $505.00!! SCORE! We always have a contest too, in which we guess how much money is in the jars and the winner this year got to do whatever he/she wanted for three hours during the trip. I guessed $510.00 and I WON!! Since I planned the trip and we were doing what I wanted most of the time anyway...I deferred my prize!

IMG_0272.jpg

The boys had school on Friday, Ryan had to work until 5:00 and I had family court in the morning, but was leaving work at 3:00 to pick up the boys and head home to finish packing. I finally made it out of family court (but not until after sitting through a meeting with a mother and father who were cursing each other out in front of their children...nice...I was SO ready for my happy place!) around 11:30 and decided to go to lunch with a friend...bonus, her in-laws joined us and they insisted on paying for my meal! Yay, more dollars for Disney! I headed home to change out of my “courting” clothes and take our dog to the kennel.

Disney2012008.jpg

I went back in to work after leaving Slinky happy and contented at the kennel. I actually cleared my desk and returned ALL the calls that I needed to make...I was kinda freaked because I have never been able to get everything done that I needed to before vacation...hopefully a foreshadowing of how smooth our trip would be!

Here is my desk, all clean and tidy...or as clean and tidy as it has ever been.

Disney2012.jpg

Picked up the boys at school...they were SUPER excited that we were leaving in just 2 hours!! You may recall from my PTR that when we scheduled our trip we did not yet have the school calendar for this year. After we booked our (nonrefundable, nontransferable room) the school calendar came out and Fall Break had been pushed back a week...like the week AFTER we were going to WDW. I decided the boys were just going to miss a week of school. I prepared a lengthy "Educational Enhancement Opportunity" application so the boys' absences would not be unexcused and they would be able to make up their work.

At home we finished packing all bags and had them next to the door awaiting Ryan's arrival home.

Disney2012010.jpg

Ryan got home around 5:20 and we were on the road at 6:00....a little off schedule, but I was trying to relax...we had nowhere we had to be until tomorrow! Well...I say I was trying to relax, but I nearly choked him when he sauntered in the door at 5:20 after we had been anxiously watching the driveway since 4:50! Then, he had the gall to go in the garage, get out some tools and announce that he needed to do some work in the car. WTH!!! Turns out he was wiring some sort of contraption that let both boys have I-pod chargers in the backseat. Didn't take long, but you know how it is when you're ready to go and your spouse is diddling around (that's a Southern expression for "not doing much of anything"0.

Anyhoo....I was TRYING to be patient and not stress out.....

The boys were absolutely perfect in the car....no fighting, no griping. This is NOT usual! They both fell asleep fairly quickly. That's my "baby" Will!

Disney2012011.jpg

We stopped at our favorite Pilot station just before getting on I-75 in Tennessee for “road snacks”. My husband is addicted to “road snacks” and has to have a stash of junk food that one acquires at a gas station and several Monster Energy drinks in order to make the drive.

Tucker at the Pilot station....the thumbs up became his “signature” photo pose throughout the trip.

Disney2012012.jpg

Dinner was Zaxby's (we are addicted to Zaxby's...to be fair, they do warn you that it is addicting in their advertising) We drove six hours to Macon, GA where we had reservations at a Hampton Inn. We arrived around 11:56 ( to be precise!) and headed straight to bed.

Okay. First things first: so glad you liked the BWV! Isn't the location of the Epcot resorts the BEST?!

Next, have you emailed Tammy about a roomie for the girls cruise?! I'd love to see ya there!

Moving on, we're also not overly huge fans of the Cape May dinner. Of course I'm not because I'm not a seafood person. Tracey tends to critique the crab, etc. as to how horribly overcooked it is.

Gotta ask, knowing your hubby worked with boats for so long, does he get impatient with the slow-ness of the Friendship boats? Like the speed at which they pitter along really drives me insane. I want to jump overboard and swim wherever I'm going because I'm faster. I know they're supposed to be relaxing and all but, sheesh, there's better things to be doing! And, okay, I'm a little spoiled to my "boat rides" being at an average speed of about 65 mph. LOL!

Love that you put a pic of you and your boys out there! Good to see you were actually there, too!

I'm feelin' ya on the Muppets love. I'm right there with ya, girl.

Starring Rolls. Oh my. Okay. I knew the cupcakes were TDF but I had no idea about the sammiches. That sucker looked goooooood!

The sharks in the art gallery.....boat paint, perhaps, would be more applicable? Yes? Tracey's boat is painted all glittery.....one of the very few nice things I can say about the stupid boat that I've lovingly named "That Other B*tch". LOL!

Tutto. We've not eaten there. You lost me on the salmon...it's fishy which can't be a good thing. LOL! The gelato totally looks yummy. Ryan & Tracey could totally bond over their lack of love for chocolate (which I agree is NOT normal) and critique their tiramisu selections. Tracey really has discovered a love for tiramisu because it's not overly sweet. I can see that. But still, how is it possible to not love chocolate????

Oh yes! I'm enjoying it all. More more more!

Yes! I LOVED the location of the Epcot resorts! I never want to stay anywhere else. Walking to two parks and being able to take the monorail from Epcot to MK (which we never did) just spoils you!

No, I have not emailed Tammy about a roomie...I have to somehow convince myself that it is OK to go on a cruise without my family first. :)

The Friendship boats are SO SLOW! We only took them to DHS once and we learned our lesson. As slow as I am, I think I coulda jogged faster! When Ryan worked at Sea Ray, we were used to cruising along at 60 mph in a nice cushy cabin cruiser. I love that you refer to Tracey's boat as "That Other B@tch"! That would be such a cool name for a boat!

Cape May dinner....I would have been so UPSET if I had actually had to turn over $200 for that meal. The desserts were good, but I could not find one single entree that I liked and I am not picky (well, not THAT picky).

I think that may be one of the only pictures of me from the whole trip. I took virtually all the pics on my Iphone. I really tried to just be in the moment and not stress about taking pictures. It is a bummer to look back though and wonder if I was really there!

Muppets....YAY! The Swedish Chef, Beaker, Animal....oh, how I love some strange featureless puppets!

I didn't realize Starring Rolls had such awesome sandwiches either, until I saw a picture right before we left. They were some of the best sandwiches on property. Cupcakes aren't too shabby either :)

Sharks in the art gallery....yes, it does look like bass boat paint doesn't it?? Not my cuppa tea, but it takes all kinds. Ryan's buddy rebuilds wrecked cars and I think he was impressed with the paint and pinstriping.

Tutto...I was so looking forward to this meal and it really bums me out that we chose this over Via Napoli (which I love!). Maybe we just ordered wrong?

I am going to try my best to get more posted tonight. We are trying to put up the Christmas tree today and are having light issues....seriously, why is it ALWAYS the lights???

I love reading about your vacation. I am totally jealous. Where about in KY are you from? I live in Northern KY.

Thank you! It seems to so weird to actually be writing a TR as I have been reading everyone else's for so long.
I live in Somerset....about 75 miles south of Lexington. Where do you live in Northern KY? My dad was from Ft. Thomas.

Saw that guy with the fishing jacket and MK. Weird but awesome in a strange way.

Cool! That guy was awesomely weird! He was totally owning the fairy thing and I had to admire that. He was very nice to pose for me too...since I was very rudely going to photograph him without his consent.

I live in Alexandria in Campbell County but originally grew up in Walton in Boone County. Somerset is a nice area. I have a friend who is from there. I probably have heard of your dad. You said he was a doctor. I used to work in a doctor's office for 18 years and in the healthcare field for over 20 years. What a small world!

We'll be staying at Pop. One of my friends works for Disney and got us really great discounts. We've planned this trip in only 2 months! Haha.

I would love to stay at Pop someday. On our first trip we almost stayed there, but we had to stay at a moderate to get the free dining promotion. Also, really want to do a trip on the fly like you are. With a year to plan, I tend to get a little too and then the trip can never live up to my expectations.

Have fun!

This is a fantastic trip report, more please!

Stop...you're making me blush! Thank you so much! It took me several days of typing to get the whole thing done. I typed in Word and then cut and paste to the boards. I really love it that you guys are enjoying this! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I will try to post more tomorrow evening. I have a HUGE PTA fundraiser this Thursday and after that I can relax and concentrate on my TR. I have almost finished writing it, but have to cut and paste and insert pics.

wow...great report. :)

Thanks! I am having fun doing it! Glad you are following along...I will have more soon!

Thanks Enzo! I looked for you guys everywhere we went!
I sure think my family is beautiful too...if I could only get Will to smile! Your son reminds me so much of him.
I am trying to be authentic with my writing "voice". I am a sarcastic, wise cracker in real life so I am trying to write it like I would say it. I started out writing it all happy and perfect...but, it sounded so dull..so I thought, just be true to your voice!
I will have more up soon. I have written to the next to last day so all I have to do is cut and paste.

DAY FOUR: IN WHICH IT RAINED AND RAINED AND RAINED

For some unknown reason, the alarm did not go off this morning, so we didn't wake up until 8:15! Quelle horreur! Waking up at 8:15 in WDW is like waking up at noon in the real world....we were slackers!!

Somehow, we all managed to be ready to go by 9:00. That NEVER happens at home.

Today was October 1...which meant is was Epcot's 30th Anniversary!!! So, where did we go today??? Where else but.....ANIMAL KINGDOM!!

While we are huge WDW fans and love to travel to WDW...we are not huge Disney geeks (not meant in an offensive way to Disney geeks). When we found out that we would be at WDW during the Epcot 30th anniversary, I was darn tempted to go....

However, the crowd levels during our entire trip were VERY high (well, by my count anyway!) and I knew that Epcot would be PACKED today. So, off to AK.

Photo of random strange black bird that would not get off that car and strangely, kept jumping on only black cars.

Disney2012074.jpg

Since we were running behind, we decided to skip our usual breakfast at Boardwalk Bakery and eat at AK. I had scanned the breakfast menu at Pizzafari and it looked pretty good. What I didn't consider was that to get to Pizzafari, we had to traverse through much of the park without having time to stop and look at it.

Breakfast was very good and the restaurant was absolutely empty at this time. I had the spinach and goat cheese frittata, which was a nice departure from the ham, egg and cheese crossant which I had been having everyday. Ryan had the breakfast pannini and enjoyed it, although it came with no sides and he was still a litle hungry. Luckily both of the boys had ordered Bounty Platters and there was LOTS of that to share. Forgot to take pictures.

Next up was a trip to Africa and a little game sighting on Kilamanjaro Safari. I vowed not to take pics this time and just enjoy the animals. Luckily for you (HA!) Ryan took pics. Soooooo, you know what's coming now............... behold the oh-so original, never before seen, pictures of the safari.....

Some type of antelope thingy trying to lick its butt. Nope...can't reach.

IMG_0333.jpg

A murder of crows....always wanted to use THAT phrase in a sentence!

IMG_0335.jpg

A rhino reclining...

IMG_0336.jpg

Weird tree with roots on top........

IMG_0344.jpg

Giraffe
IMG_0345.jpg

Giraffe butt......."does my butt look big in these spots?"

IMG_0347.jpg

Sorry giraffe...stop chasing the bush truck!

IMG_0351.jpg

The safari was really great and I enjoyed the deletion of the Little Red storyline. We had a good driver and saw lots of animals. We had to stop near the lions as an animal was in the road. We were stopped for a good 10 minutes and we began joking that the lions had planned this and we were gonna be ambushed!

IMG_0368.jpg

It seems an ostrich was in the road and a wrangler had to come lead them off.

IMG_0380.jpg

This was definitely the longest and most enjoyable safari we have done!

We then walked through the Pangani Trail while Ryan and Tucker tackled Mt. Everest.

Purba Tashi...anyone else watch Expedition Everest??
Disney2012263.jpg

Ryan loved the ride....Tucker not so much..........

Disney2012345-1.jpg

They are on the back row, in case you couldn't pick them out. Tucker got a headache and was in a bad mood after that as he didn't feel so well.

While they were riding Everest we had stopped for a frozen lemonade for Will. It was so hot that we escaped the sun by sitting inside the “bell tower” across from the Harambe Market.

Disney2012078.jpg

Suddenly the skies opened up and it began pouring rain! Lucky for us we were already under shelter. However, people began looking for shelter and started cramming into the bell tower with us. A mom with a stroller came in and announced that her daughter was sick and had a fever............grrrrreeeatttt! Another man came in and promptly started hacking.....we backed out of the tower and sought shelter under the awning at the back of Yak and Yeti. Germ free zone!

Ominous clouds gathering over Mt. Everest...must mean a blizzard is coming!
Disney2012262.jpg

You may ask why we didn't put on our rain ponchos and venture out....well, Ryan had the backpack with said rain ponchos. I began texting him that we were stuck under an awning and could he rescue us after he got off EE. I told him where we were and he kept saying “What bell tower??” We finally figured out that he was across the street in Harambe Market, so we made a mad dash through the rain and found him. Of course, it stopped raining as soon as we located him.

We were wet, hot and starting to get hungry, so we decided to head out and go to our room to rest and refresh until dinner. Tucker needed some food so he could take ibruprofen, so he got an Asian noodle salad....check off another WDW snack! It was tasty and light.

On our way out we passed Flights of Wonder and it was just getting ready to start. We had never done this and it was on my list. We REALLY enjoyed the show....just enough corny humor and the CM playing the part of the tour guide was great!

On our way out of the park, we stopped for pretzels....I got the jalepeno cheese pretzel (another check off on my WDW snack list!) It was good with not TOO much heat. It was after 2:00 so we decided not to eat lunch and save our appetite for dinner......

Disney2012075.jpg

My notes for the rest of the day are non-existent, but I know we went back to the room and rested until dinner. The heat and humidity had gotten us again!

We had ADR's at Kona Cafe at 5:40, so we headed out around 5:00. We drove to the Polynesian as we don't do the internal WDW bus system. We just like to be in control of our transportation and get into our own car at the end of the night. We had also found a short-cut from our room to the drive in front of the Boardwalk. The door to the outside, right next to our room, led to a path that went straight to the drive. Literally, a one minute walk! Ryan would go get the truck and we would meet him on the road.

We checked in at Kona and explored the Boutiki while Ryan and my dad headed to the bar. My dad got a Mojito which he pronunced the “best Mojito ever!”

Waterfall outside the Polynesian...
Disney2012079.jpg

Oh look....I was really on this trip...and it looks like I got leied too!
Disney2012080.jpg

While waiting I checked out the menu and was shocked to see that our favorite item “Tuna Oscar” was no longer offered! All the adults had had the Tuna Oscar on our last trip and it was our favorite entree of the entire trip! We had planned the repeat trip to Kona JUST FOR the Tuna Oscar. Apparently the menu had changed a few weeks before we arrived and I had not checked.

Disney2012082.jpg

Our waitress was lackluster and harried. We ordered a Wasabi Mary (another item on my WDW snack list down!) and ended up sending it back. YUCK! Totally undrinkable. I promise that we are not rude people and we paid for the drink. We don't complain to the wait staff either. I am just letting you readers know our opinion of what we had.

For entrees...we all had to drop back and punt since our Tuna Oscar was no more. I ordered the replacement tuna dish, Togarashi Spiced Ahi Tuna served with tempura fried vegetable maki roll and red wine reduction. The waitress warned me that Togarashi is a very HOT spice used in this dish and that I would only like it if I liked A LOT of heat. I LOVE heat...so bring it on!

Disney2012084.jpg

YUM! The seasoning is the dark coating on the outside of the tuna and it was VERY HOT!! The first few bites were killing me, but then my tongue went numb and it was all good after that. The vegetable maki rolls were HUGE and I would have been happy with a meal of only those...they were THAT good!

Ryan had the sustainable fish (I think it was Mahi mahi) with forbidden rice, swiss chard, and Hibiscus-Beurre Rouge. He did not enjoy this dish. The forbidden rice was black rice that had the look and consistency of the gravel that goes in the bottom of your fishtank. Black rice is a little off-putting! The hibiscus-Beurre rouge was a very floral tasting sauce and that combined with the fishtank gravel, made for a strange mixture.

Disney2012085.jpg

My dad had the Pan Seared Duck Breast and pronounced it adequate. Not the best duck he had ever had, but ok.

My boys are luckily very adventurous eaters.....Tucker had the Grilled Lamb Chops and we all agreed that this was the best entree. Cooked perfectly and a very generous portion. He did not, however, eat the roasted root vegetables and swiss chard that came along with the lamb chops.
Disney2012417.jpg

Will had the Pan Asian Noodles with Tofu in a ginger garlic sauce. He seemed to like his dish...but pasta is his addiction.

We were stuffed by dessert, but we couldn't pass up dessert since it was included in our DDP! I had the banana chocolate crème brulee, which I LOVED!! I think someone had the chocolate fondue (yummy...I mean where can go wrong with melted chocolate???) and Tucker had the Kilauea Torte.

Will on the totem guys...we ask for a pose and this is what we get? Do I win for the child who refuses to smile??
Disney2012268.jpg

We hopped on the monorail to MK as there were EMH's until midnight. I didn't write notes about what we did and my memory is failing me two months down the road, but I know we road the TTA .

Disney2012418.jpg

Apparently we rode Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. Connie and I battling it out for the future of the Universe.........

Disney2012274.jpg

I had to put this picture in here because A) I won and B) this is the first picture of Connie I have come across!

My dad and Tucker...they look kinda lost, dontcha think?

Disney2012276.jpg

Ryan and Will.....Will just gets bored and stops even firing his weapon...not even a challenge to beat him. Ryan looks like he's wearing a white morph suit...bwahahahaha!
Disney2012275.jpg

After riding what we wanted in Tomorrowland, we crossed the bride to the hub and were trying to make it over to Adventure Land, when lo and behold....the fireworks started! We had to scamper through the crowds to make it across before the lights went out. We then rode POTC and Ryan and Tucker went to ride one of the mountains (Splash or Thunder). The rest of us decided to do the Hall of Presidents, only to realize that it was not open during EMH's...duh.

Disney2012086.jpg

By this point it was parade time and we sat down by Sleepy Hollow Treats. Amazingly, Ryan and Tucker showed up out of nowhere just before the parade started. We decided to slip out before the parade crowds.

Cool picture of the castle with the lights off. Notice the reflection of the castle in the water...Ryan took the picture and was very impressed with this effect.
Disney2012279.jpg

I am assuming we went to bed when we got back.

What is your friend's name? Sadly, this town is so small that I may know him/her! I love this are and we live right by the lake. Can't complain...the cost of living is low and we are a short drive to the beach.

Haha. Most people that stay at Pop say they'd love to stay at a Moderate/Deluxe someday, not the other way around!

Well, I must say that having stayed at a moderate and now a deluxe, it would make it hard to now stay in a value. But, I would still like to try it!

Renting DVC points was definitely the way to go! We paid a little over $100 a night for our room at the Boardwalk. Can't beat that!

We rented DVC points and my first resort choice was Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I was pretty bummed when we didn't get AKL and got our second choice, Boardwalk. I LOVED Boardwalk! However, I think Beach Club looks pretty awesome...you CANNOT beat the Epcot resorts location. Walking to two parks is pretty sweet. You can also walk through Epcot and take the monorail to MK.

I am loving your trip report. And rest assured that other people try on crazy hats too. It is tradition for us and we have tons. I would post pics but in between computers and don't have any on this one, but believe me it's a highlight!

I have always wanted to try renting DVC points but when it came down to it we are always nervous putting our vacation and money in outsiders hands. I am so glad that it worked out for you guys and you are staying in a beautiful resort.

Thank you! Yeah...something about the hats...they just BEG to be tried on! The very first picture we took on our very first trip to WDW was a pic of son, Will, trying on a Sorcerer Mickey hat in the store at PORS.

I was a little worried about renting DVC points since we have always purchased our WDW packages directly from Disney. However, I heard about David's DVC Rental from a TR on this site. I checked them out and they have glowing reviews and testimonials. They also advertise on WDWMagic and are a "trusted partner" or something. They were extremely responsive and helpful. Disney sends you confirmation and you can purchase DDP through David's DVC Rental. Great experience and I highly recommend it!

It rained on time at AK on our last trip, finally brightened up after lunch but by then we were soaked!

What is it with the weather at AK?? It always seems about 10 degrees hotter then at any other park and when it rains, there is no escape!

I wish I knew some of the travel books say is seems hotter because less shade but it always seems to be the park we leave the earliest even though I'm totally into animals. I should probably just go on my own next time.

That was the only time we went to AK on this trip and I fully intended to go back. I love animals too and really enjoy just walking through the Pangani Forest and Asia area. Maybe I should go back alone too...
