Test Track Speedometer

Why is it that sometimes when you ride Test Track the LCD that shows you the speed says 64.8 mph and other times it'll read 65.2? Can they actually adust the speed so you get that added thrill?

Though, when they do push it to 65.2 mph, and break for the re-entry.. they have to jam those breaks pretty hard for that slowdown and believe me.. you will get jostled as the car bucks...

Its because that Spedometer is fake. Its set to display the exact same thing every time, just like the screen you see at the end of the ride that shows the data being "uploaded'. The LCD shows your actual speed. Sometimes you actually can hit 65.2, but usually it only hits 64.something

Can the castmembers who work that ride set it so that it does go faster? <shrug>

Are you talking about the overhead one?

It always says the same speed. You should see it when the cars creeping by at a blazing 5mph and it says 65.

Yeah.. been there.. done that.. got the PASS ;)

They'll give you a pass to go back on it again when the ride is back in operation.

the overhead speedo always has the same speed, but the LCD onboard is your actual speed... mostly, the weight of thd individuals in the vehicle will help determine the speed of the loop.

**ahem** credit where credit is due please... Quote the author.

Well, I guess I had it backwards.. the spedometer is real, the LCD screen isn't. But how come its always say 64.6 for me? You'd think they would round it to 65.

As for your question, they can't make test track go faster. Well, maybe they can, but its not designed for it

Actually niether of the spedometers are real... I have seen a car sitting in the station that is not in sync with the ride cycling through its engine sound effects and displaying a speed of 65 on the LCD... The outdoor spedometer also displays the same speed for every car... It starts its run cycle when the car hit a trigger point on the track in just after the teardrop... However, even though the spedometers are not real the ride still achieves a top speed of approx. 65 MPH just like they say...

FYI, the cars are capable for speeds faster then 65MPH (around 85-90) MPH, however the track is not... Basically it has the do with the stress on the track in the high banks... The track could take a little bit more, but basically it is at its max safe limit right now...

Yeah, I have heard that also, I think i heard that cars get up to 80mph but the track will not allow it... The speedometer usually always says the same, but though im sure, that sometimes it may be a bit faster, I think its 65mph or something like that...

Well I've never noticed the on board "speedo" - perhaps just not had time, enjoying the ride - too busy looking elsewhere. I'll watch out for it next time.

I heard somewhere that the actual degree of the bank would need to be changed (as well as the structure of it) to decrease the amount of forces...if the speed was pumped up...but if they did that, then in case of a breakdown (not on Test Track :) ) the angle would be uncomfortable to be in a stopped car.

Actually, the track AND the cars are designed to go at about 90 mph. That is precisely WHY the track is so heavily banked. The track could handle cars moving at 90 mph, but disney execs thought that would be too intense...so it goes at 65 mph.

The track was designed to handle a car moving 90MPH over it before the weight of the cars was changed... The origional design called for much lighter cars which would impose less forces on the track... During the final stages of design, however, WDI found it necessary to add more structural support to the cars which added more weight to them... The track remained the same though... More weight = less speed due to the forces imposed...

Force = Mass x Acceleration (if I recall correctly from high school Physics). I thought it was a great ride at 65 mph. I also wondered about the Speed-o-meter and was going to ask about its fakery until I saw this thread.
