Tent in August?

My wife swears when she was younger, she and her family used to tent it at Ft. Wilderness during the summer months and says it wasn't that bad. I personally think it's been a lot of years since then and she doesn't clearly remember, but she says she wants to try it this summer because it's the cheapest way for a family of 5 to stay on property. Anybody ever attempt this - cuz it sounds like madness to me! I don't mind camping, but have never gone when it's so hot.

Trust me- you will be sooooo uncomfortable. It is so hot and humid in August- and let's just say- I'm not going near a tent during one of FL's daily August thunderstorms. I know you'll spend lots of time in the parks- but going back to the room and cooling off and showering is the only thing that makes August bearable for my family.

Just my opinion.

Time has a way of erasing bad memories and leaving only the good ones which is why your wife has fond memories of camping at WDW in the summer. Either that or she has a memory impairment brought on by the inevitable heat stroke caused by tent camping in central Florida during August.

Tent camping in Florida in August is absolutely miserable. It is hot and incredibly humid. You will sweat 24/7 and you will hear "I am hot" from your kids in an an incredibly whiny voice no less that 70 times a day. It rains almost daily which all but guarantees that everything you bring with you will stay in a perpetual state of dampness. Find a way to get the extra money for a room at Port Orleans Riverside which is the least expensive way for a family of 5 to stay at WDW in air conditioned comfort.

Drop me a line and I will run the numbers for you.

wow

Having been to WDW in August without camping, I can only imagine how uncomfortable camping would be... It is hot and humid, put yourself in a tent and it is misery... There are lots of other ways to save money:
-if you are driving this is easier, but if not, pack a suitcase with nothing but a case of water bottles, you can get a 36 case for $5 instead of paying 2.50 a piece at the park
-bring breakfast bars or mini boxes of cereal for breakfast, if you are driving you can run to the grocery store and bring fruit as well
-bring fruit snacks and granola bars for snacks, one you won't hear "i'm hungry" every five minutes, two, it keeps cost down, three they aren't just eating ice cream and cansy all day, four, fed kids are happy kids
-have the kids do chores to earn Disney money so when they get there they know what they can spend and thats it
-designate ahead of time which days they are going to get treats so they don't keep asking until you finally cave
-have a garage sale or use ebay adn graigslist to generate some funds
-split meals. My husband and I always split a double cheeseburgr meal at teh counter service restaurant, it is more than enough food for the two of us and it saves us the calories

My initial response to this is to tell you to go ahead and do it and tell me all about it because I have some relatives I really don't like whom I may suggest this adventure to.

Seriously, don't do it. Get the Kingdom Konsultants to help you find a great deal for a room.

We did it when I was small..every august for 2 weeks..6 of us in a tent..we did have box fans and I remember it being hot but not that uncomfotable..

It really all depends on what you can handle yourself..

Have fun no matter what you do..:)

I have gotten a good sweat going by walking to my mailbox in August. The trip back up my driveway to the A/C in my house is enough to tell me that a tent in August is shear madness. For the love of humanity, don't do it!

You would be better off staying off property than tent camping in August. I couldn't imagine spending all day in the very hot park and then coming back to an equally as hot tent.
