...I did say I wanted to bring back Dreams! for the 30th, right? 😉
(Don't worry, I added something from the original Dreams! 10-year (you read that right) pipeline plan for our plan.)

Disney Village Updates
Although Disney Village is smaller than most of the shopping districts at other Disney resorts, it still has a lot that can be worked on and improved in keeping with the 30th anniversary celebration for Disneyland Paris. One of the key upgrades will be an expansion of the most popular store in Disney Village, World of Disney. Not only will it feature a special anniversary section, but it will feature interactive play spaces geared towards entertaining younger guests. A new entertainment experience will be the addition of a Virtual Reality Experience. Several options will be available to guests, themed to Disney films. Initially, there will be three offerings, featuring Star Wars, the Avengers, and the Incredibles. These will be rotated regularly to keep guests interested. Another addition will be themed boats to take guests on tours of the waterway connecting Hotel New York, Sequoia Lodge, and Newport Bay Club. Finally, Disney is excited to announce that the theater at the far end of Disney Village will finally be in use again as home to official Disney Theater Productions! The first show featured in this Disney Village Theatre will be Frozen, a reproduction of the recently cancelled Broadway show. Depending on popularity, new shows will cycle through annually or biannually to continue drawing guests in. As you can tell from these enhancements, every area of the Disneyland Paris resort is focused on sharing the wonderful stories of Disney with as many guests as possible, and we here at Disney Village are excited to continue that mission beyond the park gates.

Tectonic Plates
As part of the Discoveryland refresh, Pizza Planet will finally receive a facelift that will help it fit a bit more into its' surrounding area. Passing through a rock entrance tunnel, guests will travel to the center of the Earth. After ordering at the counter, which is themed to a research outpost, guests may take a seat in the jungles of the Earth's core. A few small dinosaurs can be heard. Looking up, guests can see the rock ceiling of the Earth's mantle. Tectonic Plates primarily serves American food.

The PlayDisneyApp Comes to Disneyland Paris

Launching January 1st, 2022, the interactive PlayDisneyApp from Disneyland and Disney World Resort will be coming to Paris. This exciting app allows guests to interact with the park in ways never before possible. These include -
  1. Interactive Experiences on Queue Lines: Key rides will have “interactive” queues, where guests can scan items with their smartphones to trigger an animation. The following eight attractions have been refurbished for January 2022 to include these opportunities: Peter Pan’s Flight, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Phantom Manor, Space Mountain, The Tower of Terror, and Beagle Boys Prison Evasion.
  2. DisneyTrivia: Put your knowledge of Disney to the test with a series of trivia challenges, often themed to the land you are currently inhabiting. Countless trivia has been added to the app, making it a true learning experience.
  3. DisneyPlaylists: Download the app to your phone and get free iTunes music loops of curated official Disney playlists!

But the fun doesn’t stop there. These features are present in all PlayDisneyApp parks. For Paris’ 30th, something special will be coming.

Welcome to the Character Collection Challenge, a sprawling exclusive-to-Paris event lasting the entire year. Beloved characters are running wild in Disney, you should try meeting them all!

This challenge uses up-and-coming AR technology. You’ll be able to “see” the characters through your phone camera, wandering through the park. “Take a picture” of the character through the AR lense to “unlock” them for further use.

The characters can always be found on Resort Property and will appear marked in the “Character Collection Challenge” section of the app on a resort-wide map. Characters appear randomly, and once present will remain for 20 minutes before disappearing for a random length.

Most characters have a “general area” that they can be found. For instance, Minnie is found in the entrance plazas of Disneyland Park and Studios, while Rafiki hangs out at the Robinson Treehouse. This will encourage guests to travel all around the park, possibly discovering new areas they would not have gone to previously.

Each character comes in “sets” of their respective IP. There are 25 sets, each with five characters each (125 characters total). When you complete an entire set, you are eligible for a special commemorative pin! Just present your completed set voucher to the Disney Store.

Some sets are limited time. For example, the Spring set only lasts for the season of spring, after which those five characters will not be available for unlock: but the Summer set now will! The Nightmare Before Christmas is another limited-time set, lasting for Halloween and Christmas season. Anniversary Weekend, Bastille Day, and Holidays last for the months of April, July, and December respectively.

What makes the Character Collection Challenge different from other “collection games” like Pokemon Go is what you do with the characters you’ve met. Now that you’ve “met them” you can have them join your story.

Tying into the central theme of the “The Story’s Just Begun”, guests will be able to create short “stories” of clips of their adventures in the park. The clips can be modified or left largely alone, and then put to background music. One could make a nice “trip report'' of their adventures that day, or they could plop in 3D models of all the characters they’ve unlocked and have them interact in a unique way. This is your opportunity for creativity -- the only requirement is the videos must be less than one minute long, for storage reasons.

Steps to Make a Video
  1. In the PlayDisneyApp, record your experience at Disneyland Paris so far. Stop recording whenever you’d like. Feel free to start recording at a different stop, and the next clip will automatically follow the first one.
  2. Plop down any characters you’ve unlocked. You can add speech bubbles, and a text to speech audio replicant will make it sound as if that character is speaking the words (this tech has been used before and although at times glitchy certainly works).
  3. If you happen to have any Disney Pins, you can use them in your video too! After scanning with your device, plop them down as stickers to go alongside your video.
  4. Choose a music option for your video. You can use the curated Disney Playlists or any songs you own on iTunes.
  5. That’s it! A simple video editor, designed for guests to mess with while waiting on long lines.

Once the videos are completed, they can be stored on your phone for personal use or be uploaded to social media with a specific hashtag. Your story will now be played within the park, on a series of temporary screens set up all around the resort. This takes the storytelling emphasis of the celebration to a whole new level!

Walking around the resort, you’ll find triangular screens at key intersections. These will play the most recent stories from the app!

A cast member assigned to monitoring the app’s social media presence will review every story before it is uploaded to ensure it is appropriate, and a bot will automatically blur anyone close to the camera and not in said guest’s party.

Location of the temporary screens set up around the resort.

Like Disney’s Pin Trading during the Millennium Celebrations, the Character Collection Challenge and Storytelling opportunities will add a whole new reason to visit Disneyland Park Paris. After the year concludes, the temporary screens will be removed, but guests can still collect characters and create stories to post on social media, under the #TheStorysJustBegun hashtag.

Whether competing in the sprawling Character Challenge or simply wanting to know some ol’ fashioned Disney Trivia, Parisians will surely love the PlayDisneyApp!
