Project Nine: Happy Birthday to You!

You’ve made lands, produced a Broadway spectacular, created a one-of-a-kind E-ticket, done some placemaking, and even redone a park. Now, why don’t we take a chill pill?

A major anniversary year is always celebrated in the parks in some way whether it be Tokyo Disney Resort’s all-out celebrations or Disneyland’s small rededication ceremonies. And with many of these birthdays come presents. A new nighttime spectacular and new parade are par for the course. But some parks include even more with new seasonal events or total refreshes of iconic attractions.
Everyone loves a birthday party and that’s what we want you to create here. There are many parks celebrating major anniversaries soon: The Magic Kingdom and Walt Disney World at large will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary, Tokyo DisneySea will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary, and Shanghai Disneyland will be celebrating its 5th Anniversary in 2021, Disneyland Paris will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2022, and Tokyo Disneyland and the Tokyo Disney Resort at large will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2023 (not to mention that 2023 is the Centennial Anniversary of The Walt Disney Company itself).
Your challenge this round is to choose one of these parks or resorts and create a grand anniversary celebration that would put Tokyo to shame.

At the end of this project, ONE person will be eliminated. Anyone else on the team besides @Sharon&Susan is eligible for the role of Project Leader. Sharon&Susan and @Outbound have PoMVP and are not eligible to be nominated for elimination. Good luck team. This project is due Sunday, July 26th at 11:59PM Eastern.

Research is going to be important this round. We mentioned "a celebration that would put Tokyo to shame" in the prompt so research what that means. Additionally, we want you to assume COVID didn't happen and all is normal atm (if only).

Going off this advice, I think this comprehensive guide from TDRExplorer about the 35th Anniversary Celebrations would help us a lot:

So I think that the most obvious choice would be Magic Kingdom. There's already some stuff in the works (Tron), but there is a ton that isn't being touched that we could focus on to really make this special. Personally I'd love to see Tomorrowland get some work done, maybe pirates as well, and there is a lot that we could do with temporary food. Aside from that, a new fireworks show, parade (maybe an updated electrical parade like Paint the Night), and the like could be really great.

That's my initial thought as well after I read the prompt. We will never know the actual plans for WDW's 50th Anniversary pre-COVID-19 so I think it would be fun to speculate on what could have been.

Also, just to further start the conversation beyond WDW, but Disneyland Paris will be celebrating two major anniversaries in 2022: the 30th Anniversary of Disneyland Park (and DLP as a whole), and the 20th Anniversary of Walt Disney Studios Park. WDSP doesn't really get a lot of love anniversary-wise since the park is included in the overarching anniversary (see the 25th Anniversary celebrations despite the Studios turning 15 at the same time), but with the major expansion to the Studios on the horizon, I wouldn't be surprised if Paris will do a double-celebration package.

That's a very fair point. Maybe we could have half of the team focus on Disneyland Paris, and the other on Walt Disney Studios Park.

In terms of what we could do, absolutely Discoveryland overhaul (I'd love for the land to go back to its' Jules Verne roots.) Refresh some of the more ignored areas of the park, like Adventureland. Maybe overhaul Alice's Curious Labyrinth? Then normal parades, entertainment, and the like. I'm not entirely sure what WDSP could get, but it could definitely use work.

If we revisit the 20th Anniversary of Disneyland Park, they had a brand-new-ish parade/cavalcade (Disney Magic on Parade!, which is basically a redressed Once Upon A Dream Parade, and the 20th Anniversary Celebration Train), a new fireworks show (Disney Dreams!, my love), among other new offerings. If ever we move forward with Paris, we could replicate that formula, especially with the new lake (I'm thinking something similar to HarmonioUS tech-wise and World of Color: Celebrate! story-wise to tie it to Disney cinema history).

All of that sounds great to me. I'd love for the park to celebrate cinema as a whole like it used to, but I think that Disney's removed too much of that identity to really fit anymore. A show celebrating Disney cinema specifically would work really well, though.

Disneyland Paris has grown SO MUCH in the 10 years since the 20th as well so look at what happened during the 25th as well.
Also, as mentioned in the prompt, go Tokyo scale with this: new events, new shows, etc. Let the judges see an absolute celebration for the park or resort you choose.
