TCM teams up with Disney to refresh Great Movie Ride

Just a thought, can this ride even operate without the show stops? You could get rid of the CM's doing live spiels, but the vehicles are not completely automated - the CM's initiate movement and control the speeds. The stops at the gangster/cowboy scene and Anubis are needed for the flow of the attraction.

I'm sure the ride system could be automated, and the show stop scenes could be reworked to not need CM actors, but its unlikely that this much change will happen, so its unlikely that the live spieling will be removed.

I hope the iconic neon marquee signs are not removed.

Unrelated comment: some of you mentioned that the current script pokes fun at the movies but it does not in any way.

If the CM's were removed, the entire Anubis/Switcheroo scene would be a complete waste of space.
The Western and Gangster scenes could probably work without stopping but the temple would have to go. Maybe after the rest of the park is overhauled, the scene could be changed.

I suppose all the rumors about the GMR closing or being replaced will finally be put to rest! I knew the GMR was safe. When I ride it a few months ago, my opinion was it needed updating, not replacing.

TCM is so perfect for this since Turner owns the MGM library. I'm not sure what Disney's contract is for the rights of the MGM titles for use at the studio park are, but this deal allows for continued use of those rights through a third party.

Does this deal allow TCM to use other property rights they own as well on the GMR, such as Hanna Barbara?

This is awesome news! I doubt we will get a full DHS redo announcement along with this tomorrow but fingers crossed!
This is definately part of the DHS makeover project, so that is quite possible. They may just announce the deal with TCM but not project details. Those details could be announced when they announce the DHS redo...

However, the 2017 chopping block rumor makes me wonder if they have bigger plans. Pure speculation on my part, but it's entirely possible that TCM signed on for more than just 2 years, and maybe they're working with Disney on a bigger project to replace GMR. Considering all of the changes happening at DHS, I could see this as a very real possibility.

They're booked as an events space until 2017 aren't they? I suspect TCM aren't paying many millions for the sponsorship, just enough to pay for the refresh and licensing of new clips, with a bit of cash left over to keep things running until the booked events have taken place and another attraction or two have opened to take the pressure off GMR as being one of the last five standing.

Then in a couple of years that too will close, to be the Frozen Kingdom or whatever Disney decide to do next with the building.

Great sponsor, but I find the ride to be a complete snoozefest.

I like classic movies but, for me at least, the ones they've included are too obscure and the implementation is cheesy and cheap.

I'd love to see them, at the very least, add large screens in the background showing clips of the movies themselves and up the animatronic quality. Swapping out some of the more obscure scenes for something more relevant (doesn't mean current) is a necessity IMO. A

nd no, unless you were going Disney the whole way, I wouldn't add any Disney or Marvel to it (although Lone Ranger, Tron and Mary Poppins would make some great scenes!).

And, while I love the movie, the Alien scene has got to go or be changed to be not as scary for little ones. A cool battle scene between Ripley and the aliens from Aliens 2 (Aliens) would be a great replacement.

Oh so remove the only bit of excitement on the ride?

I believe its a five year deal between TCM and Disney,,, please correct that anyone if wrong.

My understanding is this does not mean that GMR show scenes won't be updated or the entire ride replaced at some point. This is phase 1 because it's quick and easy to do to offer change.

Whether or not anything changes down the road remains to be seen

What if the CM role is re-defined as Robert's co-host or something?

Based on reading responses here (and the front page article - wouldn't load for me yesterday).

IMHO, having Robert at the preshow is going to be a downgrade - I believe the trailers speak for themselves. If the 'continuous loop' of the preshow goes away (and you have to wait outside the 'theatre' to watch a lesser preshow in full), the downgrade is much, much, more pronounced. (Disturbing the preshow could more than offset the good that TCM will bring to content in the finale).

Kiddies - everything doesn't have to be for them. Does the witch or the alien scare them? There are other attractions for them to enjoy. Perhaps not yet in DHS, but once the carny rides come....

'But the new generation doesn't relate to old films' - So? TCM makes it even more about classics (and minimizes the need to 'update' w/ new things). And that is a good thing...

Musicals - are an important part of Hollywood. And if you think of all the Mouse's animated classics, a good many (a majority perhaps?) are animated MUSICALS. So in effect, a good percentage of the parkgoing public are fans of musicals...

Fantasia - can that realistically be replaced with animatronics (what's behind that wall?)...

The preshow should have him explaning the the movies to help guests better understand. How is that a bad thing? Honestly I don't even remember the last time I saw the pre-show. We're lamenting that loss?
I think he was lamenting having to wait for and actually watch the pre-show as opposed to passing through to get to the ride.
