I am originally from way upstate New York but have lived in Pittsburgh for nearly twenty years, now. People ask me all the time where I am from bc I have an accent. I think it may more be bc my mom and grandmother have very thick Scottish accents. My 8 yr old DS says Picksburgh and tennis shoes, and it drives me crazy. Noone here plays tennis:D
As long as u don't say yinz my least favorite Pittsburgh word.

I call them sneakers or running shoes.

I call them sneakers. DH's response is "why do you need something to 'sneak' around?" Then I remind him that he hasn't played tennis in years and the racket in the closet is a nice dust catcher. :D

And on a related note...while it's been a long time since I lived in NJ...just try and envision a hint of a TX twang w/some moderate "tawking." ;)

Try the strong Cajun accent. My daughter sounds like a French Bostonian. She drives the "cahr". And floats the boot with her Doddy. (Drives the car and floats the boat with her Daddy.) I am from N'Awlins. We don't have accents there like where my husband is from Down the Bayou. LOL.
We constantly get "axed" where we are from. lol

Never had a problem in WDW (good at understanding accents I guess), but on the long car ride down one year I had a lady working at a fast food joint in Kentucky or Tennessee where we stopped for dinner tell me that she liked my accent. She asked us, "Where y'all from?" which I can't lie, sounds WAY HOT to this Canuck when said in her accent, only to have my Michigan born and raised wife answer, "Canada". Talk about throwing someone for a loop! She couldn't figure out for why my wife and her mother sounded so different from me and the kids until I explained to her that I come from a border city and that my wife and her mother were both Americans from Michigan, not Canadians. The weird thing is she thought they sounded more foreign than me for some unexplained reason! :D

My parents are from Europe and my dad especially has a really thick accent so I am really good at understanding people with accents. Now my hubby on the other hand grew in the midwest and can not understand anyone with an accent. I have to translate English to English for him. LOL

I never understood a word our server said at Nine Dragons in China. All I could think of was the movie Topsy-Turvy and Miss "six-pence please" Other than that there have been times when a strong southern (i.e. Larry the cable guy) accent met a strong New England accent (i.e. Jack Kennedy) and we each had to say things slowly to be understood.

This made me laugh cuz Larry the cable guy is from Nebraska (which has almost no accent I know I live here now) and his "acccent" is fake! LOL
