Taking our own Luggage...

Hi all,

The Fiancee and I are heading on our honeymoon in late August and our first night at WDW we're having an early dinner at the California Grill. While there is a CHANCE we could get our luggage delivered before dinner, we'd rather just bring it with, but have never done that with the Magical Express before. Do we just wait at baggage claim, get our bags, and hop on the ME with the bags? Obviously we don't put the yellow stickers on the bags, correct? (Sorry if this a dumb question - just wanted to be prepared!)

Thanks all!

~Amy~

Yes.

Don't use their tags and proceed to the carousel. Get your luggage and take it with you to the bus.

Congrats!

As long as you don't use the yellow tags, just wait at the carousel like you normally would.

If you put the tags on the bag, you'll totally be "those people" who stand there forever waiting for bags that won't be arriving.

Depending on your airline you may be hauling your luggage across the airport, not fun if you are in a rush. Southwest is on the other side of the airport. You could carry on a small bag with things you need right away like a change of clothes and check the rest of your luggage that can be delivered to your room.

Exactly so!!! As others have said just dont tag your bags with the yellow stickers or they wont come out at the baggage claim area. Have a wonderful time!!! Marie

Why not just pack a small carry on with what you need and let Disney take care of the rest? We always have a carry on because of husband's medicines and a few extra clothes. Then when we get to the hotel if our room isn't ready we check it at the luggage place whilem we go off to the parks. Never had a problem.

This is great advice for MANY reasons. Yes, WDW ME baggage delivery COULD run late - but it's far more likely that the airlines will just get confussed and deliver your baggage to Uzbekistan.

That carry on is best thought of as your 24 hour emergency kit - it lets you shave, has the IMPORTANT stuff in it, and gives you time to shop for clothing if the Airlines just blow it.

Speaking from personal experience, the airlines DO blow it. My last trip, we were severely delayed out of Newark Airport, and didn't arrive in Orlando until almost 1 AM. Our luggage, however, never left Newark.

There is nothing worse than it being 1 AM and realizing you have no change of clothes and no toiletries. After a long day of traveling, all you want to do is take a shower, put on fresh clothes, and go to bed. Unfortunately we weren't able to do the second part of that until after 4 PM the following day.

Is it required that you wear clothes to bed while staying at a Disney resort? That could be a problem. ;)

LOL....you guys are all a hoot! (Yes, I said hoot.) We could put everything in a carry-on, but as I'm always paranoid our luggage will be lost, AND my luggage always weighs in at JUST 49.5 lbs, I already pack a ton of crap in my carry-on. Swimsuit for when we first arrive - make-up, suntan lotion, hair dryer, brush, purse, books, blankie (yes, my future husband is still bitter that I love my blankie as much as I love him), etc. Since the carry-on is normally pretty full, I thought I might want to take advantage of bringing our own luggage on the ME with us - I'll talk over all your entertaining suggestions with him and see what he wants to do! :)

Seriously, I would never pack my arrival day dinner clothes in checked luggage, no matter where I was flying to. It's just asking for trouble.

I have to aggree with this. Always expect your luggage will get lost or delayed and carry-on what is required for at least one day. Most likely you will not have any problems, but it does not hurt to be prepared.

Caveat: I am not sure if this is still the case, but it was when I witnessed it a little over a year ago.

One big advantage of using the DME yellow tags is the agent responsible in case of lost luggage. If you do not use the yellow tag, you are responsible to work with the airline to locate and have luggage delivered. If you use the yellow tags, DME manages this on your behalf with the airline carrier. They coordinate everything from daily compensation to get necessities to full compensation for completely lost luggage. While you are enjoying yourself at the parks, they are doing the work with the airline.

We were at AKL and there were two different people in the situation. A mother was there with her daughter about 13 whose luggage was completely lost. DME coordinated with the airline and compensation to get necessities at WDW. New clothes were a daily thing and not cheap at WDW. She received clothes for the entire week. The other family did not use DME. They were constantly battling with the airline. Until the airline declares a complete loss, compensation is minimal and mostly out of your pocket until finalized. The father was always very vocal when arguing with the airline with words that should not be said at WDW.

We find it best to pack the first two day in the carry on.
You just never know and that should be sufficient time to locate and deliver to your resort if lost. Having a wife that worked for the airlines for many years, even a direct flight doesn't guarantee you bags will make it.
prepared = :) unprepared = :(

I guess because I was lucky enough to travel with my family since I was young I always thought it was a known thing to pack some extras in your carry-on just in case..as i found this week most people do not know that..i have been listening to a co-worker for the past 3 days arguing with her son's track coach and the airline over lost luggage..the poor kid arrived in Disney with nothing other then things packed in his carry-on to entertain him on the flight..after listening to her and several others talk and fuss about this, majority of the people here looked at me like I was crazy when I said I always pack a carry-on with at least 2 days worth of essentials..I even had one of my supervisors ask if thats why Disney Cruise Lines suggested to her to pack her bathing suit and evening wear for the first night in her carry-on..she continued to ask why she wouldn't get her bags right away and why they would have to be x-rayed when just going on a cruise :brick:..I choose not to answer because I believe my answer would have been extremely sarcastic..sorry I'm rambling..but rule of thumb do everything you can to be prepared for the worst when it comes to luggage and I always would go with putting the yellow tags on for the exact reason someone mentioned earlier..Disney will take of everything!

For you, it's easy, pack a light dress that doesn't wrinkle too badly in your carry on. For him, he doesn't have too much of an option. For him? Wear Khaki's an oxford button down shirt and a jacket on the plane, and pack shorts and a golf shirt. Switch at the resort to play in the parks and switch back for dinner. Sometimes the easiest option is to wear your heaviest clothes for travel, and pack the lightest. For you, a lightweight "toss in the bag" dress is your best option.

They are going to California Grill which is business casual dress. There is no need for a jacket and khaki's. It is summertime and wearing decent cargo shorts and a golf shirt to California Grill is fine. Now V & A would be a differant story.

Unfortunately there are many people feel it is fine to where t-shirts and hats in signature restaurants as well.
