Sword in the Stone Ceremony

Is the Sword in the stone still standing in front of cinderella's carousel? Since they discontinued the Princess interactive show (sorry I can't think of what it was called). You'd think they'd bring this one back for YoMaD which would have done pretty good.

The stone and the sword are still there but they ceased the show about a year ago. I remember a thread showing pictures of the last performance of it.

Yep, no sword in the stone anymore.

I never actually got to see it either:(

Does anyone know why they stopped it?
It was somehow going to conflict with the "Let's have a Ball" show for Year of a Million Dreams. However, the ceremony did not return when "Let's have a Ball" was cancelled. The sword and anvil are still there, though, right in front of Cinderella's Golden Carrousel.

I know that the Sword and Stone are still there in front of the carousel because when I went Dec 23, I pointed it out to my mom.

Because the Year of a Million Dreams celebration is so captivating that we simpletons can't focus on anything else.....

Phew, I'm glad someone out there is making sure that I don't get too confused by having a big celebration and a little show all in the same place. My number 1 concern when going to the World is how confused I will be!

Not to be negative, but...

The demise of this show was all about the bottom line. It required one technician, one equity performer, and one attendant on eight hour shifts. There was talk for quite awhile it would disappear anyway. It wasn't really a show at all but instead...a "happening".

Then there was Let's Have a Ball...which didn't cut down labor hours, but it did get more kids involved than just one-per-show. I don't even know how such a horrible show as that ended up in the times guide.

PLUS, Sword in the Stone had to be downed during peak attendance time anyway, as Fantasyland attraction lines and crowds would protrude into the performance area. So all in all they finally said it wasn't worth it.

Merlin still does perform a ceremony at Disneyland however...

If they take every little piece of magic away because "it is not worth it" then what you will end up with a a very nice theme park where the magic used to live. This was a great hideden gem. I find it curious that it is still worth it for Disneyland to do.

I miss the Sword in the Stone show.:( It was one of my favorites to stop and watch in the MK. I can't believe it's been gone almost 1 1/2 years.

I wish they still did the ceremony. I would love to have been a child and been selected to pull the sword free, that must be the most amazing feeling ever!

I'm a huge fan of the legend of King Arthur. I always wanted my picture with Merlin but I don't think he is available for pictures.

At WDW he for the most part didn't do pictures. Once in a blue moon he would do pictures before or after a show. But 99% of the time he was show only.

I too wish I could have been picked as a child for the show. I loved watching him pick the big tough guys, who for some reason couldn't pull the sword out. One thing I did get to do was be the "official rope holder". Man I miss that show.:(

Well, even though Merlin may be gone, rest assured if a guest of Pure Heart and Deeds steps up to the sword in an attempt to raise it from its anviled slumber, then, the sword may magically rise and declare to that guest:

"Who so Pulleth Out This Sword of this Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of All England."

Well, it may be pulled halfway out of the anvil anyways, so I guess they become half a king.

This may seem like an obvious question, but how did the sword work? Was there a castmember stand near by with a button to push when they wanted the sword to come out? Or did Merlin control who got to pull the sword out? Or is it just "Disney Magic" that I shall never comprehend? :)

I was wondering the same thing myself. When we were there after Thanksgiving, I took a look at it trying to find a magic button or something. (I didn't want to look like a moron, so I didn't spend too much time looking :)) But I didn't see anything, so I assume it was operated by some mechanism under or inside of the stone, to be accessed underneath or from a remote source. I'd love to know how the darn thing works! :p

I always assumed it was a magnetic lock kind of mechanism.

On, you can't pull it.

Off, it comes free.

I am sure that someone knows for sure, but just my assumption.

I forget where, but it was a remote spot in one of the buildings overlooking the show. The release was "manned" by a Disney tech.

I looked it up once because my youngest daughter was once picked to pull the sword from the stone (much to the constertanion of her older sister :) ) I still have the medallion and proclimation that goes with it.
