News SWL Is Proof That Disney Has Lost Its Way

Yep, it’s Star Wars land. Not increasing the prices to insane levels, not building a dirty Oil Refinery in DCA, not Pixar Smear, not Project Starbust, etc. Disney was on the right track and Star Wars ruined everything.

Those all suck for sure but I think everyone was waiting on SWL (the land that had the budget and the A team of imagineers) to really formulate an opinion on what current Disney/ WDI is capable of - and it seems that they did not meet expectations.

It’s amazing how many different demographics they missed on with SWL. So that begs the question, what demo are they appealing to currently? I think it’s primarily people that didn’t have expectations. Casual DL guests and casual Star Wars fans. And even with them, I think the reaction is that the land is “good.” It’s obviously an issue when you re neither exciting the hardcore DL fans OR the hardcore Star Wars fans with a billion dollar addition. ROTR should probably convert some of the naysayers from both groups into fans of Galaxies Edge. How many, remains to be seen.
I’m trying not to get in the fray here...but I do have to say this is so intelligent so far...great thread and a productive exchange.

But I think what disney has done...with all Star Wars...is basically strip out most of the attachment to ANY potential demographic by trying to “streamline” out all the things that the fans really want.

Ironic...because as Kennedy tries to be “progressive” and “inclusive”...and if reports are correct Disney wanted to basically erase the OT moving forward by catering to the children (gee...that mistake sounds familiar)...they have taken all the sauce out of it.

The Lands seem to be the physical embodiment of that...nothing to “hate”, but nothing to “love”.

Even those that are defending it more don’t say they love it on any emotional level - if you notice

I agree with the result but I think their intention was to try to cater to everybody but in the process of watering it down, the land doesn’t really cater to any one demographic strongly. It’s just kind of lukewarm with mostly everyone.

I’ve went into a lot more detail on older posts.

Stardust is the most postively impactful project DLR is going to get between the 60th and 70th anniversaries. Ignoring how empty is it now, navigating the park during high crowds (ie Halloween, Christmas, and Socal Resident Ticket Weekends) was terrible. Disneyland's compactness is a nightmare to move through especially during parades, nightshows, or fireworks. Crowd handling and direction around Main Street is like crawling through a maze. The fact that money was spent on removing retail space and improving the guest experience in just moving around the park is a miracle.

Removing a few planters and making more stroller parking doesn’t do anything about the real problem of too many APs. Of course now that’s all been a waste of money.

In essence...I’m saying the same thing.

By trying for “everyone”...you make it bland to everyone. Forgettable.

I just watched the documentary about the toys “plastic galaxy” and they did a graphic that showed countries where the original trilogy had unusually high popularity:

Disclaimer: I’ve called Star Wars a “NATO fanbase” in a bunch of threads for years...

Here was the list from that movie:
US
CANADA
MEXICO
AUSTRAILA
JAPAN
KOREA
GERMANY
ITALY
FRANCE
SPAIN
UK

I mean...I was WAY off 😬

Ok we are saying the same thing. You just threw me off when you said “streamlined out..” in your last post.

Yeah I’ve pretty much been saying the same thing since I first saw the land.

I just read somewhere in the forum (forgot where) that there may be some thing doing with comic fans/Star Wars fans not being big park goers? But that is just speculation.
While I just barely missed the Pandora/animal kingdom opening madness it still would have been pretty bad without FP. I had no desire to risk a repeat performance this year over at Disneyland and went to Legoland instead.

Yeah...I guess “cast too wide of a net” fits better...

And of course is 100% opposite

You know what I would like to see them do in the future for the land? Have a BACK IN TIME BATUU NIGHT. What I mean is, since they are obessed with having this take place after LAST JEDI, have a event for a few months or a year similar to SEASON OF THE FORCE where we get to go to BATUU during the time of of the OT TRILOGY. That way we can have Vader, Luke, etc. there. You could add a new mission for the Falcon set to the OT time, you can have ROTR overlay set to the death star where you can have a Emperor AA and Vader AA and still use the same show building. That would be fun.

^^^ brilliant. What's most intriguing about this, is that the media was very lenient regarding Disney's newest dog-droppings offerings. But now that the immediate result of a new SWL is lighter crowds, some journalist(s) are starting to call on the Disney suits (if that's what this article even is).

Does anyone else find it interesting that Chapek isn't really mentioned in the article?
