Swimming in Disney's lakes

I was told that you should not swim in any lakes or ponds in Florida due to some alge in the water that makes you sick.:hurl:

Why do they have sandy beaches with lounge chairs on them if you should not swim in the lakes? I know I don't go to a beach to just sit on the sand. I like to go in the water as well.:drevil:

What about the jet ski's and the parasailing? I've done both and get pretty soaked when jet skiing (is that how you spell it?) and when I have gone parasailing they actually can dunk you in the water and bring you back into the air.

Good thought I forgot about them. :drevil: Then has anyone seen a gator on the sandy beaches at any of the resorts?
I've lived in Florida my whole life and have swam in lakes and creeks and what not...never been sick from the algae, nor have I heard of anyone getting sick. As far as gators go, I have came across plenty of them (seen them on the shoreline or their heads peekin up from a distance) while I am wakeboarding, and plenty of sharks while I am diving and never been bothered. I must say that as many as I have seen I have NEVER seen a gator at WDW and I have stayed and been quite a bit. There were accounts of them being on property in places but I think that Disney acts immediately to remove them. The beaches have nets about 20 yards or so off of the shoreline with buoys on the top which should help to keep any "critters" out of your way.

also seaweed can get tangled around yr legs

I am not worried about seaweed. I grew up by the ocean and have always had to deal with seaweed.

Actually in pond and lakes the danger is the weeds that grow from the ground. They can tangle you. Seaweed just floats around and can be very annoying. I suspect that the lakes and ponds around Disney have no seaweed. Just alge and gators???

Thanks for the info. The nets make sense. I actually saw a gator in the water by tom sawyers island the last time I was there.

Well, I know that guests used to be able to actually go in the water- my DBro and his ex went on their honeymoon at the Poly in the mid 80's and they splashed around in the lake. I guess the resorts that have beaches all had them when bathing was allowed?? And they didn't want to remove them- they are still pretty, and nice for lounging around at.

As for the parasailing, waterskiing, and other "get-you-in-the-lake" activities, maybe they figure you won't be in the water long enough for any algae/bacteria to affect you?? I'd be more worried about the gators than the bacteria, too!

You're not from Florida, are you. In Florida, where there's water, there are also these things:

And at the Caribbean Beach, they have signs warning about these guys, too:

For theming and so you can sit on the beach. If you don't want to, don't go to the beach.

Yes TSI is the "area" I was referring to in my post. I did hear that Disney reacted quickly in removing him from the area. I wouldn't worry about it, and if you need to cool down and are worried about it..stay within the parameters of the netted area and know that you are protected. I am in the water whenever I am at a resort on Bay Lake or 7 seas lagoon, you will be fine.

There are plenty on property. The best way to see them is pay attention on the outside section of the tracks during the train trip from Frontierland to Toon Town. They also get fed turkey legs in the Rivers of America alot.

The odds of an attack may be quite low, but 1) they've gone way up in recent years and 2) do you really think Disney would want to risk it at all?

If the RoA have seaweed (which they do), I'd bet the various lagoons of the world do, too.

Thanks for letting me know that if I don't want to do something not to do it.:hammer:

As a beach person I would not go to a beach and sit there unless I could go in the water. It is a tease. Other people may enjoy this but I do not.

At the Poly that have lounge chairs on the sand with canvas canopies attached to them this is not just for theming.

Yea, I am sure that you will be fine too. Just a question, why would you want to be in smelly water when they have all of those beautiful swimming pools?:)

No kids!!!! :animwink:

Actually I prefer salt or fresh water opposed to the pools. I grew up on beaches and lakes. And I had read in more than one place you shouldn't swim in any water in Florida that is land locked. And the Poly beaches look so inviting.

There was a park near my parents' house in Miami that had a lake and a "beach" style setup like you see at the Disney Resorts. My mom took me once when I was about 11 years old and I ended up contracting some crazy infection that led to a very scary growth on my neck. I was taken to a group of dermatologists who proceeded to take photos of this because "they had never seen anything like it before." lol it was scary.. I was given medication that burned like a hot iron when applied, but it did the job and I was fine 2 weeks later.

I've been wary of lakes ever since!

I have also seen gators at the Magic Kingdom. While on the railroad between Frontierland and Toontown, the railroad passes through a wooded area with a creek/canal on the left side. I saw a gator (guessing 3-4ft) resting on a log in the creek. In fact I purposely stayed on the train and make another complete trip around to double-check and the wife saw it also.

And I am not talking about the (2) AA gators either!!!!

Neither would I. Which is why I spend no time on those beaches.

The beaches are there for theming. The chairs are there so you can enjoy the beach. Would it be better if they weren't there at all?
