Survivor S40: Winners at War

Apparently several players would have voted for Michele, but once they heard some people like Tyson advocate for a Natalie win, they switched to secure a Tony win.

A lot of people felt Michele should have come in second, but she lost votes because the majority of the jury didn't want the Edge returnee to win.

Poor Michele. But I'm glad they made it so Tony won.

It also makes me wonder... was Michele playing an even bigger game than we saw? I felt like she got a great edit and was playing hard, but wasn't shown much. I wonder if that's because she received 0 votes, so the editors and producers didn't focus as heavily on her story.

For the record, I think the order should have gone:

1st place: Tony
2nd place: Michele
3rd place: Natalie

Despite Natalie's triumphs, she did not do a whole lot strategically when she got back in. She latched onto Michele, who she knew had no other option, played some idols, and won some immunities. Michele was the more strategic and social partner of that duo.

Interesting stat:

The last three females winners were Natalie (S29), Michele (S32), and Sarah (S34). They finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively, this season.

This also extends the longest streak of winners from one gender (the 6th straight male win).

Survivor has lowered the application age from 18 to 16. It's unclear if that means 16 and 17 year olds can play, or if they can just apply and start the application process early, so that they're ready as soon as they turn 18.

Tony losing would have been really disappointing. Having said that, one of the things that makes Survivor interesting is the unexpected results. If Michele had managed to sway the jury, that would have been an interesting and legitimate win.

I don't have a strong preference for the 2nd/3rd place finishes, but I agree with your ranking.

I think it's a good thing we had Edge before this season. It allowed these returning players to see it play out, and see how unfair it was. It also set the precedent of, if you're the returning player you'd better take every risk and make no mistakes. Rob was justified in calling that out. Had Underwood not won previously, Natalie would have stood a better chance.

The way Jeff communicated that absolutely hinted at a teenager season.

I am so not down for that. Very rarely have the teenage players been exciting. Michael and Julia are really the only two who have been good. The rest kind of flopped.

I also have seen it mentioned on Twitter that kids that age should not be going through that mental state. It was frequently talked about this season how much of a toll it takes on your mentally. And these are winners. Imagine 16 and 17 year olds going through that. Hard pass.

Another interesting stat: Natalie becomes the first woman to receive jury votes since Chrissy in season 35.

Sorry for all of these stats. I keep finding them as I scroll through Twitter, and I find Survivor stats fascinating.

The list of people to win Survivor, then make it to the final Tribal Council their very next time out:

1. Sandra Diaz-Twine
2. Parvati Shallow
3. Natalie Anderson
4. Michele Fitzgerald

Granted, it was a little easier to do this season than when Sandra and Parvati did it.

Good point, younger people may not have learned how to deal with the bullying and judgement that come with being in the public eye.

To say nothing of what happened last season on Survivor. Imagine a young girl being put in that position.

So before 39 aired, I had spent the summer rewatching old seasons, compiling my own season rankings and my rankings of ever player ever.

I have ranked the following season's players: 1-17, 20, 26-28, 31, 33-40. The ones not ranked I either haven't watched recently enough, or don't remember enough about them. So my rankings are incomplete. I hope to finish them over the next few months. But here are my current top 10 players:

1. Parvati
2. Tony
3. Boston Rob
4. Kim
5. Sandra
6. Cirie
7. Sarah
8. Jeremy
9. Yul
10. Rob Cesternino

Obviously more of that will change as a rewatch more seasons, but that's where my list currently stands.

so many interesting things coming out in post game interviews. Dalton Ross had interviews with the final 6. It clears up a lot of things, especially the end game.

cant wait to hear Rob Cesternino post game interviews.

I probably won't get to all of that stuff until this weekend, but the bits and pieces I'm hearing are interesting!

Given the same limits of seasons from my player rankings, here is how I currently rank the top 10 seasons:

1. Micronesia
2. Heroes vs Villains
3. Cambodia
4. Cagayan
5. David vs Goliath
6. Winners at War
7. The Amazon
8. Borneo
9. Blood vs Water
10. Cook Islands

Again, upon my rewatch I will probably move some of these around, but that's where it sits currently. With Winners at War at #6. I debated really hard between DvG and WaW for #5. But I just felt that DvG had the better all-around season. WaW had higher peaks, but was not as consistent IMO.

Natalie's win was predicated on essentially having "won" 6-8 other things in the first place. I don't think it was "buying her challenge win" in the least.

I found it far more annoying that a frankly random player like Chris happened to win a single challenge. He really didn't do anything. I would have had a similar reaction to Wendell winning the comeback challenge.

Natalie, as she outlined, had a massive laundry list of a resume. It was not just because she spent the most time on the island either. Amber should have been fairly equally positioned, but clearly wasn't. She continued to brutally dominate, even after the first come-back challenge when there were a huge number of people competing against her.

The most broken aspect of the EoE probably boils down to the jury. You shouldn't be eligible to vote if you never had a conversation with some of the finalists. EoE maybe needs to be purged after the first comeback. Something still needs changing if they use it ever again.

Arguably one of the most deserving people got to come back. But it was still a lucky fluke and perhaps not conclusive enough that they really fixed that game aspect.
