Surprise, surprise! The Nutcracker movie stinks.

I guess if it was any other studio releasing this, results would be OK but because every Disney film is expected to make at least half a billion, it had no chance

A movie with a giant net loss for the production company is a movie with a giant net loss for the production company regardless of which production company. Many a non-Disney movie gets labeled a financial flop, so, don't know what point you're trying to make.

It will probably break even after cinematic + disc sales. But that will be seen as a flop.

Do you have any figures of how much a movie is expected to make past the theatrical window especially when it's not well received by critics and audiences? A hundred million dollars in DVD sales seems a steep hill to climb.

I really enjoyed the first one. Also, wasn't it a fairly big success for the Mouse's wallet?

It was, but movies like that and Wild Hogs didn't belong with Disney's brand....

Just $282 million more to break even.

Disney knew this was going to lose once A Wrinkle in Time bombed, they just didn't know how much. Really, the best possible realistic scenario, financially speaking, is playing out. Low $20 million opening, strongish 50% hold against The Grinch. Doing way better than A Wrinkle in Time internationally. Really, I don't believe they could have reasonably expected much more after the March bomb and another set of poor reviews. They're lucky that it's not worse, IMO.

More than half of Disney Studios movies lose money in their theatrical window, but, National Treasure 1 & 2 bucked that trend. They both netted about $25 million. Critics panned them. Audience scores were OK-ish. Surprised they didn't go back to this well.

And we can stick a fork in this one. There's only a few minor international markets for it to premier, so, at $117 million B.O. it ain't going to do more than $130 million (if indeed it can even get past $120 million with over 90% drop from first to second week in some markets). In the end, it will have been a net loss for the company at about $120 million in the hole. Pretty much the net loss for A Wrinkle in Time.. And BFG. At least it wasn't as bad as Tomorrowland at a loss of $165 million.

The only young-girl-lead in a fantasy movies to turn a profit in the past 20 years are: BatB, Cinderella, and Alice1.

And people wonder why Disney's gonna remake more live action princess movies...

Both this movie and A Wrinkle in Time came across in marketing like over-dressed, overwrought messes, in my opinion, which made them fall flat. They just didn't seem to have real emotion -- or "heart" as Walt expressed was missing from Alice in Wonderland. Whether or not it was true in these, I can say that the previews definitely did not show it overcoming the overwrought production. Both looked leaden with it, to me. Sometimes the special effects and costuming can overwhelm a script rather than serve it. These were movies (unlike some action superhero films) where production can overwhelm the story and heart -- and the previews (which draw audiences through the door) made it look that way, to me.

It surpassed production costs globally. So eventually this makes money. Not the kind of money Disney expects but not a total write off some studios suffer.

Disney only sees half (actually, probably less than half) of the Box Office take. The theaters get the other half. Also, marketing isn't part of the production budget. So, take the production budget and add half as much.

So... it is a huge net loss for Disney Studios. Just as I posted above... so... why are you saying it's break-even?

It will get a few more dollars from theaters. Be offered on digital over Christmas (many people wait for digital) and then go to disc.

From most critics I had read earlier it is said that it will be an annual tradition on streaming and Disney will be able to sell it to cable channels every year.

It may take awhile but it should ultimately turn a profit.

Like how popular the third Santa Clause movie is?

There's optimism, and then there's wrong.

BTW, if "most critics" say it will be an annual tradition, you can surely quote three of them saying that... please do...

I would but that is a lot of research and you can't afford my fees.
