Surprise! Instead of going camping we are going on The Disney Magic...Our first cruise trip report.

Well I think I need to start this soon before I completely forget what I want to report...So without further ado here is the story of our cruise, or some of it anyway...

Our family consists of myself, my handy husband whom we will call HH, my 10year old daughter "S" and my 5year old son "W." My HH is not too comfortable with this whole trip report thing so he asked that I not show many pictures of him or the kids. I can work within those parameters...

Anyway, for months we were planning a camping trip on the Oregon Coast for spring break, I had requested March 27th-April 7th off of work and been approved. In early January the "kids sail free" on The Magic out of Galveston offer came across my email. I of course went to the Disney Cruise Line website and checked the dates. There was one 8 night Bahamian cruise that left March 29th and returned April 6th...! I cautiously emailed everyone's favorite Kingdom Konsultant @Disneyfalcon and got some price quotes. It was obviously meant to be because we could afford it! So without giving it too much consideration, lest I talk myself out of it... I just decided to go for it and we reserved a category 10 gty room. Then I found super cheap airfare from Spokane to Houston on Southwest. Then my HH and I decided to not tell the kids...

It was a ridiculously hard secret to keep, especially as we got closer to departure day. I had to pack the suitcases while they were at school and then put them back in the closet to hide them. Finally the morning of March 27th arrived. We had originally planned on not revealing anything until the morning of the cruise...but I just couldn't handle it anymore. So as we got ready to leave for our 5 hour drive to Spokane, my daughter finally asked why we weren't taking the camping trailer camping. I responded, "We don't need it, dad and I decided we would sleep in tents instead." Her face just fell, I guess the idea of 10 nights in a tent during the rainy season in Oregon wasn't too appealing.

I asked the kids to sit down for a minute as I retrieved their Mickey Ears. I looked at them and said in a serious tone, "Dad and I have been keeping something from you for the last couple of months." That got my daughters attention, I think she thought it was going to be some kind of life changing bad news. So I handed them their Mickey "horns" as my son calls them and said, "We aren't going camping, but where we are going you are going to need these, we are going on a Disney Cruise and we are leaving right now!! :p "

Cue the stunned silence.

After about ten seconds, my daughter said, "What? What?! WHAAAT!!!!!!:D " Then she started jumping up and down and screaming. I almost started to cry...I loved surprising them with that.

We loaded up for what would be a very long but thankfully uneventful travel day. I took no pictures. We landed at 1am at Houston's Hobby airport and were met by the Supershuttle driver Mohammed (thank you @sweetpee_1993 for recommending I call them) And by 2:30am we were tucked into our beds at the adorable Harbor House Hotel in Galveston Texas.

First real vacation day March 28th in Galveston Texas

IMG_0778_zps3a11ddd6.jpg

This was the view from our hotel room that we woke up to. The Magic would be parked out there to whisk us off on our vacation the next day. We had a whole day to kill so we explored everything within walking distance of our hotel.

First stop the Museum of Offshore Oil Drilling, no trip to the gulf coast of Texas would be complete without it.
IMG_0696_zpsd5390e49.jpg

All jokes aside, it was actually very interesting. They had an actual oil rig that you could explore.
IMG_0765_zps00d67d53.jpg

It was directly next to our hotel. Here is a view of the hotel from The Ocean Star.

IMG_0725_zpsf83a1d5a.jpg

On the opposite side of our hotel you can see the sailboat mast sticking up, that was the tall ship Elissa and the Seaport Museum. Our next stop.

IMG_0741_zpsa651aa08.jpg

IMG_0758_zpsd860acfd.jpg

You can see all the oil rigs in the bay in the background. And this is the back of our hotel. What an awesome location!

IMG_0702_zps6838eb17.jpg

We loved the Harbor House, the building was a renovated old warehouse on the pier. I wish I had taken more photos of the room. They had two queen beds, a couch, a fridge and a microwave. The folks at the desk were super friendly. The continental breakfast was pretty sparse, but it was free so I can't complain.

Directly behind the Oil rig museum was Joe's Crab Shack, we have never eaten at one before and since it was so close, we went over for lunch.

IMG_0771_zpsc1e454fd.jpg

Lunch was good. I don't know if I would go out of my way to eat there again, but it was fun. Our server wrote on everyone's bibs to personalize them. My HH was "The king of all crabs." S's said, "Too cute to be crabby." And W got, "Mommy's little shrimp." I didn't get a bib, because I ordered coconut shrimp and I guess he just thought I was a neat and tidy eater...

After lunch we did a walk around The Strand, which is the older business section of Galveston.

IMG_0817_zps8dd7f822.jpg

This place was awesome, we bought a bunch of truffles to eat...

IMG_0781_zpsf546e864.jpg

IMG_0785_zpse96ce3ad.jpg

Later on we got dinner at Fuddruckers which has really good burgers, we have one where we live...so not very adventurous of us. But we just wanted a good burger...Then my husband and I sampled the local microbrew on the steps of the hotel while our kids ran around and played with rocks...simple minds as they say...
IMG_0819_zpsae0bbb59.jpg

Everyone was excited to get to bed so we could wake up and walk here...

Thank you! Mai Tais were my favorite, they had two kinds. We liked "The Captains," not sure exactly what the difference was once The Captain got ahold of it... I have to say compared to the Disney Parks cocktails were way affordable on the cruise 4-6 bucks for a nice mixed drink.

I can't wait to here about the Fantasy. I am super curious about the bigger ships now. I need to go back and reread some trip reports now that I have actually gone on a cruise.

March 31st Sea Day and Easter Sunday

IMG_1005_zpsabee8b3b.jpg

Yup...That's chocolate!

I had briefly entertained rousting the family for Easter Sunrise service outside on the deck, because that sounded pretty neat. But in the end sleep won out...So we were up by 7:15 for our character breakfast at Parrot Cay. We had been instructed in no uncertain terms by our wonderful dining team that we could not be late for breakfast. So we arrived promptly at 8am autograph books at the ready.

IMG_1006_zps2282ba0e.jpg

Breakfast was no frills, eggs, pancakes, French toast and omelets...Right after we ordered a crew member came to our table with very strict instructions. "Have your autograph books ready and only two photos per character with each family." My husband looked at me as if he knew I was going to break this rule...Which I might have.

Breakfast came out quickly and then the characters showed.

IMG_1011_zps91e8ec4e.jpg

My daughter whispered to me that Goofy's handler was actually Prince Charming from the show the night before.

We got a visit from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto and Chip very quickly and were served our breakfast. We finished eating but there was no sign of Dale so we sat and waited. Our servers filled the time creating hats for us out of napkins. My HH got the best one which included the covers to the serving dishes. My son refused to wear his, so next thing we knew, Evandro our server was methodically tying W to his chair with cloth napkins, then he drug him tied to the chair out into the center of the room and put the napkin hat back on him. It was really, really funny.

I thought it was kind of a risky move on Evandro's part, he had to judge us after only two days; were we the kind of parents who would laugh and take photos while he tied up our five year old. Or were we the type of parents who would pretend to laugh and then use our video to sue Disney for emotional damage and child abuse...Lucky for him we are the first type. :p At this point I decided that I really liked our serving team. They were so much fun. The kids folded up a nice little bonnet for Marcus and he even agreed to a photo with the kids as long as I promised, no Facebook, no Twitter, no You Tube, no blogs, no posting of the photo in public...So here is the picture ;)

Just kidding! I am a woman of my word.

Dale finally made it to our table and then we exited breakfast. I think the napkin hat thing was the best part. Unfortunately the characters are really rushed so the kids didn't get a ton of interaction. W was especially excited to get his book signed. This was really his first Disney experience that he was old enough to understand what was going on. And all of it is still very magical to him. Not that it isn't magical for our daughter, but she has met lots of characters and had many more Disney trips. W is having all of his Disney firsts :) which are so special.

After breakfast we returned to the room to discover that the Easter bunny had come and left Easter treats on the balcony and hidden eggs in our room!
IMG_1047_zpsdbb7bccb.jpg

Well I guess the eggs weren't quite hidden, but distributed.

The kids checked out their treats, ate some candy and then we decided to participate in family scrapbooking so off we all went. We were given two sheets of scrapbook paper each (more freebies!) and then there was lots of things to cut out and glue. We had a nice time of cutting and gluing.
IMG_1048_zps200d6c1c.jpg

After scrapbooking we relaxed in the Promenade Lounge. I really liked it in there. We could borrow board games and play with a nice view of the outside and it was quiet. I am a huge fan of quiet.
IMG_1041_zps5d321951.jpg

My son stacked up his smarties.
IMG_1044_zpsbfbdd512.jpg

All that relaxing made us hungry so we went up to the Buffet on Deck 9 for lunch.
IMG_1054_zpsd0855955.jpg

More chocolate...

Here are our adorable desserts, the jello was the kids favorite. I think children are immediately drawn to tiny spoons and forks.

IMG_1057_zps7a61300f.jpg

After lunch we decided to give swimming another try. It was again very busy at the Mickey Pool, but this time S was swimming with her brother. W mostly stayed in the hot tub by the goofy pool and I was able to get a lounge chair close by. The hot tub was PACKED with kids. After swimming W and my HH returned to the room for afternoon nap. S and I went to deck 4 to watch the approaching Coast Guard boat.

Unfortunately one of the passengers was having a medical issue and needed to be offloaded. So they had steered the ship closer to Key West and a Coast Guard boat pulled alongside and they made the exchange off a platform on a deck 1. Luckily the seas were very calm. We didn't see the actual offloading of the ill passenger or their family, nor do I think it would be appropriate for me to show the pictures of that. But here is a few pictures of the Coast Guard boat. I was fascinated by all of this, as an ER nurse I was already wondering how they handled medical emergencies. One of the things I wanted to do was go and see what kind of medical facilities were in the ships health center, but I never remembered to go at a time when it was open. Not that I am even sure if they would've shown me around...
IMG_1068_zpsb7359d67.jpg

IMG_1070_zps8134ae88.jpg

I don't think the ship was stopped for more than 5 minutes and we were on our way again.

S and I went up to deck 9 for a bit and I made her an appointment to get her hair braided. We could now see the Florida pan handle and quite a few yachts and sailboats.

Pictures from deck 9

IMG_1059_zps95d327f6.jpg

The Incredibles were on the giant TV. We decided to share a second lunch of chicken strips and watch for few minutes. Then it was time for us to work on our Origami skills again.
IMG_1073_zps917e572b.jpg

IMG_1075_zpsc827ea12.jpg

The frogs were a little tricky but I think we did well.

After frog making. We got a cute braid put in my daughters hair and then she wanted to go to the kids club for Ratatouille cooking school with her friend who we had run into creating our amphibious friends. I returned to the room to join my HH on the balcony for a solid two hours of reading in the sunshine with a gentle ocean breeze. While W played in the Oceaneers club.

Oh, mylanta! That chocolate egg is to die for! How cute that they set the bunny up as painting it. Your daughter was quite observant to recognize the Prince pulling double duty.

We sat at our table in the corner waiting for the black and white dining room to come to life!
IMG_1083_zps3212fa2b.jpg

IMG_1084_zps5682edca.jpg

I ordered the salmon in phyllo on Evandro's recommendation; he said it would be, "life changing." And my HH and I both got the Ahi Tartare with wasabi aioli.
IMG_1089_zps098b95ba.jpg

This was the Ahi and it was really good.
The "life changing salmon"

My HH's lamb chop
IMG_1107_zps807b3aa7.jpg

Well, the salmon was definitely good one of my favorite meals on the cruise, but I wouldn't go so far as to say life changing.

Dessert was of course for my son another Mickey Bar.
IMG_1109_zpse7d0100d.jpg

And then Sorcerer Mickey came in and moved around the dining room. He didn't ever really get to close to our table. And I had a heck of a time trying to adjust my camera settings in time to get a photo so this is as good as I got. Mickey is the blur.
IMG_1119_zps3eb44e42.jpg

I really enjoyed dinner, but it was the one time I wished we had a different table location we couldn't really see all the TV screens with the characters that matched the music from their movies, that was a bummer. It was all still very cool. The servers changed there tops to be colored at the end too.

After dinner it was cocktail time.
IMG_1123_zps2a6b9fc4.jpg

IMG_1124_zpsae927992.jpg

Then we dropped W at the Oceaneer Club and the rest of us went to the show to see the comedy and Ventriloquism of Michael Harrison. It was funny, but not my favorite of the cruise. We returned to our room to find this guy.
IMG_1120_zps2b5efc04.jpg

I went to the Oceaneer Lab to pick up W, who was in the middle of a game of "Donald Says." I got in trouble for taking a picture . I guess they don't want any pictures of what goes on in there for some reason. I showed her that I only had the back of a bunch of kids and Donald. Anywaaay, now I know. "There is no picture taking in the children's activity centers during secure programming."
IMG_1126_zpse9d5800b.jpg

After that we went to bed. I wanted everyone rested because in the morning we were going to be at Castaway Cay!!!!:p:):D:cool::p

April 1st Castaway Cay!!

We were all awake early and headed up to Topsiders for breakfast. After breakfast we watched as the ship started slowly backing toward the dock. It was pretty windy and I guess they had to take it slow. As we were watching this I stared out at the beach and where we were to spend our day. It looked perfect. :)
IMG_1129_zps4fccfc88.jpg

I had every intention of running The Castaway Cay 5k that morning. I had my running clothes on and everything, but as I stared at this tropical paradise awaiting us. I realized that I didn't want to waste a second of our precious time there running. I don't feel as if I had anything to prove anyway, a 5k is a pretty easy distance for me and I just ran the Princess Half Marathon in February...So I changed my clothes and got ready to leave the boat with my family.

We went over to the port side of the ship to check out the goings on at the dock.

DSCN0732_zpsefb1cae7.jpg

Finally at 8:45 they let us off the boat. We were one of the first family's off. We didn't really have any big agenda, but I knew I wanted to find some chairs near Penguin Plunge. So we began our walk over there. We decided to walk instead of take the tram so we could better see everything there was on the island.

This is where I stopped to rent some snorkel gear for my HH and I to use and one set for W to try. I had gotten S a set at Costco before we left. I was pretty sure W wasn't going to really get into it, but I wanted him to check it out.

We found some chairs under a palm tree :p! Yes a palm tree! I deposited our enormous beach bag (thank you DVC members gathering) and then I reapplied sunscreen on everyone. It was beautiful out, mid 80's with a nice breeze. The water was so warm! At least to us it was, I was told by many of our fellow cruisers who don't live in the rocky mountains that it wasn't that warm. But official word was that it was 71 degrees, that is definitely warmer than 62 which is about the best we can hope for in my local swimming holes.

DSCN0754_zpsc1f46ef1.jpg

W and I went out to try out the water slide, while my HH took S on her first snorkel ever. The water slide was so much fun! I was so proud of my little son, he showed no fear, his only request was that I go first so I could be waiting for him at the bottom. They had life jackets to borrow and I had stuck one on him because he is not quite a swimmer yet.

S had kind of a hard time relaxing and breathing with the snorkel, I am sure she will get it next time. So they came in and we decided it was time to build a sandcastle.

DSCN0751_zpsbea1c46b.jpg

I had arranged a surprise double jet ski adventure for my HH to take S on, because we had special plans for W the following day at Disney World. So we headed off in search of Cookies Bar B Q around 11:15 so they could get some lunch before there noon trip. Lunch wasn't quite ready so we sat in the shade and waited. I took a few pictures.

At 11:30 lunch was ready. It was typical bar b que lunch, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, salads. We really liked it. Especially the banana bread. After lunch we got some ice cream, the tropical flavor was the best! We walked over to the boat beach, our daughter was so excited because she had no idea what her surprise activity would be. We went to the little building to check in and were informed that all boat and jet ski excursions had been cancelled because of the wind. This was the look on my daughters face :(.

We walked back toward our beach chairs, I tried to cheer my daughter up with a second round of ice cream. We stopped and watched the hermit crab races. That was funny!
DSCN0767_zpsb8743754.jpg

She was starting to get over her disappointment after that. And then we ran into our dinner companions and she was immediately happy to see her friend. Next thing we knew the girls were off to the water slide. I decided to join them for a second ride. W began playing with his buddy at the edge of the water and my HH went and got them a floaty to play on. After the waterslide I decide to go snorkeling by myself.
DSCN0785_zpsd666d066.jpg

The water didn't look too choppy until I got out a little ways. The snorkel area is pretty big. And there are several buoys, my husband told me I needed to swim way out to the red buoy because that was where all the cool stuff was supposed to be. So I began making my way out there. I saw a huge sting ray first.!The further I got from the beach the more fish I saw.

Unfortunately my snorkeling pictures came out terrible. I can operate an SLR no problem, but not the point and shoot...apparently there is an underwater mode . When I finally got to the red buoy, I realized I was the only person out that far and I began to feel a little uncomfortable. I was also getting tired, I had been battling a head wind the whole way. If my HH had been with me, I would've had no problem continuing my search for the submarine and the Mickey statue, but I was alone so I decided to turn around. On the way back I saw more fish and a barracuda! Super cool.

After snorkeling we spent the next couple of hours, watching the kids play with their friends in the water and on the beach. We agreed to watch our new friends kids while they went to check out Serenity Bay and when they returned they did the same for us. I am so glad they insisted we go.

My HH and I caught the tram to the adults only zone around 3pm.

Sadly we could only spend about a half hour because we needed to be back on the ship by 4:30. So we got back on the tram and returned to the beach where the kids were still happily playing. I began the sad task of shaking the sand out of the beach toys and packing up our stuff. Once we got everything stowed in our giant bag we began our sad walk back to the ship. We stopped to buy some Castaway Cay souvenirs because we definitely enjoyed our day. My HH got a really nice tumbler and a coozy, I got S a big sun hat, which she really could of used earlier in the day, I got a neat cup and W got a T-shirt. They were trying to shutter the gift shop around us, but they still let us make our purchases.

W was pretty tired after 8 hours of wide open beach play, but both he and his sister made the walk back to the ship like troopers. I am a big fan of walking if there is a nice path and some shade, especially when we travel. I feel like you can really take in an area if you are outside on your feet; hearing and smelling, able to stop and look at things further and for as long as necessary. On a bus, or a tram the world passes by too quickly. I am trying to get my children to understand this...hopefully they will learn to appreciate it.

We forgot to mail our postcards before the post office closed...
DSCN0852_zps291acfee.jpg

We dropped off our towels and they handed us damp wash clothes to get off the sand and then we were back on the ship.

We went straight to our room for a round of showers. The kids had sand everywhere, it still coming out of my daughters hair, and permanently embedded into the liner of there bathing suits. I am not complaining, its a lasting reminder of a perfect day!
IMG_1134_zpseec9c9e0.jpg

After we were all showered, we realized that after 8 hours in the sun, and only four reapplications of sunscreen, we were all sun burned. Luckily S and W were wearing swim shirts or it would've been much worse...But my daughters cheeks and lower arms were already hurting her. So I immediately went in search of Aloe Vera in the gift shop...Yeah me and the 1000 other fair skinned cruisers who weren't the last people back on the boat...So they were sold out. So as an alternative I coated my daughter in moisturizer, gave her some ibuprofen and hoped for the best.

Around 5pm we pulled away.

That lambchop looks gooooood. So sorry about the burns! My W is quite fair skinned, too. Five minutes and he's got pink cheeks. And pooh on the wind messing up your jetski plans! But it looks like y'all had fun nonetheless. I can't wait to hear about W's exciting surprise (It's been one of your adventures I've been looking forward to hearing about.)!
