They're really far apart right now... mostly random, so it's not been worth timing them so far.

Right.
Sometimes labor is such a definite thing. Water breaks, pain becomes stronger. Then you definitely know what to do.
Other times things are more vague and uneven for a while. So you might not be exactly sure what's going on. If that should be the case, don't hesitate to call the doctor. I'm sure he/she is used to false alarms.
