Substitute Dessert with Appitizer

Under the new Dining Plan, for a table service meal you get Entree, dessert and a non alcholic drink.

Was wondering if anyone knows if WDW would let you get an appitizers instead of the dessert.

Thanks for you help

I have never tried but I don't think most places would do that. It can't hurt to ask at each restaurant you visit? I am sure some may do it. I'm with you...i'd rather have the appetizer than dessert. I'll prob try on my trip in August, as well.

When they were changing the Dining Plan, I wrote to Disney saying that if they were going to get rid of one component of the Plan, it would be nice to be allowed a choice of appetizer or dessert with your meal. Between dessert on the Counter Service, dessert on the Table Service, and the snack options, there's a LOT of sweets on the Plan. It'd be nice to have soup or some other appetizer with your meal.

They wrote back syaing that they would "take it under advisement".

I "heard" that it differs between restaurants and it is basically left up to the individual restaurants whether they allow it or not. I've also "heard" that some of the restaurants allow a substitution only on certain appetizers (depending on the price I assume). It couldn't hurt to ask and if they say no... well, nothing ventured - nothing gained!

I had wondered about this too. At some places I would rather have the appetizer instead of dessert. Last year I tried to get a child size portion of adult meals for my DD last year and had no luck. Everywhere said no, but that's a little different since the appetizer & dessert prices are similar.
I will ask when we go in September.

I wish they would give a choice. I would much rather have something a little healthier like a salad or soup than a sweet full of calories and fat. Disney, Please give us a choice.

I believe if Disney intended to allow a choice or substitution, they would have said "an entree and a dessert or an appetizer" - don't you think????

Yes, but the new version of the Plan is only 5 months old. Before that, it really didn't change much at all for its first 3 years. I guess we're all just hoping that with negative feedback on the changes, Disney will consider reversing its decision (or at least add the option of app or dessert).

Also, the decision *could* be left up to each individual location. It's like the Snack options. The only items that each location MUST give out as a Snack option are those listed on the official brochure. Anything else that you can use a Snack option for (the so-called "Under $4 rule") is set by each individual location.

Or, it could be that we're stuck with the currect version until Disney re-negotiates the contracts for the 2009 DDP.

It never hurts to ask.

The problem with allowing a choice is that one person in a party will choose an appetizer, and the other will choose a dessert. Then it's a 3-course meal and you're taking up a table for 75 minutes or so. They want you to get the h**k out of there to make room for someone else.

on the subject of the dining plan

will be there in 10 days and will use the Annual Passholder with Dining Plan for the first time and i was wondering a couple of things to expect before we go---

1) has anyone ever noticed if you receive any noticible difference of service when the wait staff see you are on the dining plan vs. cash customer?

2) the bill you receive does it reflect the dining plan cost plus other cost (such as alcohol beverages etc.)?

3) related to (2) above when you leave the tip do you calculate the percentage on the cost of the dining plan and add ons or do you calculate based upon the menu cost of the meal?

4) any suggestions or things you think key that will help make the dining plan a better experience.

1) I never noticed a difference. And now that the tip is no longer automatic for parties under 6 people, any difference there was should disappear.
3) Suggested tips printed on the receipt are based on the menu prices of whatever you ordered. Cost of dining plan doesn't matter - you can't break out how much of the DDP price is for the CS, TS, or snack credits anyway.
4) When in doubt about what's covered - large v. small drink at CS, can 2 snacks be charged as 1 CS, etc. - just ask a CM.

1. I have not noticed a diff in the quality of service from one year off and one year on it. I have heard that some complained that the service was not so great bc they were receiving their tip anyway, thus making the tip now to be paid...gee thanks.

2. Alcohol will show up as the amount uyou should pay only. You will see all prices and then when the tiotal is there, only the drinks will need to be paid.

3. Tip should be at your discretion, of course, but should/could reflect the entire bill, I think.

To confirm...

Was wondering if anyone knows if WDW would let you get an appitizers instead of the dessert.

Per official policies...

At all Disney operated restaurants, appetizers may not be substituted for dessert in the Disney Dining Plan. Guests with dietary needs should discuss available options with the Chef. Guests may order a second non-alcoholic beverage or non-alcoholic specialty beverage in place of the dessert component of their meal.
