Stupid Magic Band Tricks.

I will never wear a magic band specifically for the reasons they want me to wear one. Being easily trackable throughout the park is not something I approve of. I also don't want to be sent emails with targeted advertising because they noticed I like to ride XYZ ride repeatedly. I like my anonymity which is one of the many things the old fastpass system offered. Knowing that disney has a record of my attraction preferences, food preferences and even the time of day I like to get to the park makes me want to puke.

dont the other tickets have rfid tags in them now too? though that could maybe be blocked with the right wallet
 
Not to get people (overly) worked up or anything, but they (Disney and others) have been tracking you for years. It's just much more efficient now with the Magic Band.

I find that MBs are great, I can go to a park or even DTD (er Springs) without ever taking my wallet (Disney Transportation), I can open my room, enter the parks, use FP+, shop (Mrs Gen is a great fan of that) and eat meals and snaks (my favorite part). I could also get pictures taken (by a pro) but I prefer to take my own.

This is aimed for Breakfast and Lunch where you just sit at an empty seat. When hundreds of parties are taking seats every hour this is a great way to track this so your food gets to you easily... I bet we will start seeing this at a lot of quick service places to help them start to feel fancier lol
its not about feeling fancy, its just more efficient, pananera is installing a system at all their stores.

it saves an employee wandering around looking for table number cards

overall it seems adoption has been pretty slow since the techs been around since 2012, and haven't really seen it yet, as the panera's in my area haven't added it yet despite it being announced

im sure theyve always tracked purchases, lines, etc, the biggest change is that some of the things they could use mb tracking for in the future change the tracking from non identifiable to identifiable, like a character saying hey how was pirates, after you just rode pirates.

while real world 1984 tracking such as liscense plate scanners when you enter/exit a town, feel very 1984 and scare me a bit as to the long term implications of all that data being linked and stored somewhere

the magic band seems like it would add more immersion. and
its easy to opt out by simply not going to disney parks

is it really a good idea to wonder around without a wallet? without id? I would feel so naked without my wallet

I believe the tickets only have the short range RFID tag, so you have to touch them to the reader to use them. The bands also have a powered tag that can be read at a distance.

the magic bands have a long range transmitter built in. the plastic media is not readable without direct contact to a reader.

First off we are discussing an article about possible uses of MagicBands. Having said that, when Disney first announced the whole MDE stuff they were pretty clear that they would not be tracking your movements inside the park. I am pretty sure that there is no one sitting in an office somewhere saying "Oh look, John is standing outside Mission Space." They most definietly are collecting information anytime you use your MagicBand or your ticket within the park. Anytime you use any media to enter a park, at a FP machine of any type, using either to charge to your room they are collecting that information. I am not sure I believe that using a MagicBand is any worse then your ticket at Disney. And considering how many people think that Disney's IT and in park online stuff works so poorly I think it is a good day if your able to get into the park and into attractions with no MDE problems

I am also convinced the people that complain about the tracking also have an EZPass in their car, have eight different “shopper cards” on their key ring and enjoy and sign-up for discounts from stores with their phone number. Don’t think the grocery store is selling your information so you can save a quarter on those bananas? I am in the marketing business and I can buy any bit of data I want for a price. I can find out what you drive, how much you make, how many kids you have, what you read, where you shop, etc. Marketers have been using this information for a long time and it is only going to get more complex. We love the convenience of all this but we have to realize everything we do is traceable and linkable.

The sad thing is people are not smart about their risks; Disney is trust worthy enough with your information but companies like the free to play games or random websites or FB games are where people don't think twice about installing them on their devices or signing up for them without realizing they are giving them everything. Those companies then sell that information. Disney is most likely honestly just using this information for making your stay more convenient and easier. The other companies are using your information for personal gain...

As far as selling and manipulating personal data goes, generally, as long as you don't behave as loathesomely as OkCupid did, then I really don't care. The REALLY sensitive information they can't touch (theoretically), so basically they're just selling standard statistical info.
