Stupid Magic Band Tricks.

What is new is that with the bands they can track you without you actually knowing it. Not saying this is either good or bad.

Well yes, but they also dont NEED the bands to do that (its just more efficient). Use their wifi...use a park ticket (even if it doesnt track in real time, it logs when you do use it to get a fp entry), use a credit card to buy something..etc.

Its a scary world we live in...but it is what it is.

Yes, but in those case you are still aware of the interaction. The magic bands on the other hand can be used to track every single thing you do in the park without you ever knowing it.

I often wondered If they "tracked" us...but what ticks me off is they never use that data to help me. We always stay at POR, hot the same restaurants etc... but every time we make a rez its like they don't know us from Adam.

This many many times. We have been having our consumption and behavior tracked for well over a decade now. When are companies going to do something useful with this data? When and I going to be served meaningful web banner ads that are useful at this particular moment in time?

Case-in-point: I ran a search for eye glass outlets in my area in order to compare prices, last November. I am STILL receiving served banner ads for glasses today. Do they really think that eye glasses is the sort of purchase decision that I am going to put off for 5 months?

To that end, Disney is keeping records of our movements on property, purchase decisions as well as vacationing preferences. As mnagel55 eluded to, when is it all going to be put to good use?

Serve me appropriate ads based on my vacation patterns. Serve me meaningful discounts and specials. Know my name when I arrive wearing my magicband. You can reference all of the Fastpass reservations for all hotel guests - so allocate the appropriate number of buses to each hotel so that we all arrive on time.

These are just a few small steps to a better vacation experience.

All of my banner ads are relevant to my web traffic... maybe clean out your cookies once in awhile?

Most banner ads have a little blue icon in the corner that you can use to customize what shows up for you. You can mark specific ads irrelevant, offensive, obsolete, etc.

LMAO. You just described EXACTLY what the "business side" of MyMagic+ is. It's also the very thing people complain about the most.

Don't mine my data!

Except, hey you're not mining my data enough!

But privacy!

But cater my vacation to highly personal details you've collected about me!

If you really don't want them reading your mb, simply buy a little RFID credit card sleeve, cut off the bottom, and slide it onto your mb. When you do want it read, simply slide the sleeve off the chip. They have many different designs. If you want a less obvious fit, also cut the side down and glue it back together. It only takes a few minutes. One sleeve should do two bands.
I don't really care if they read mine, but if I ever do care, then I know what to do.

You know, unlike those *other* restaurants where the serving staff actually pays attention to the guests and remembers what table they're seated at.

This is aimed for Breakfast and Lunch where you just sit at an empty seat. When hundreds of parties are taking seats every hour this is a great way to track this so your food gets to you easily... I bet we will start seeing this at a lot of quick service places to help them start to feel fancier lol

In my mind, there are (at least) two types of data mining that could be done with the MBs. One is "John Doe was at points A, B, and C, for X, Y, and Z minutes." Another is "Guest #1257B was at points A, B, and C, for X, Y, and Z minutes." To me, these are two very different pieces of information. The first is tracking a specific guest, most likely with the hopes of tailoring future offers to them. The second is more of a "traffic monitoring" device--see how many people go in what directions, and how long they do various things. I really don't have a problem with the second type. Even the first is something that doesn't necessarily get me riled up.

Do we even know what (if anything) Disney is doing with any potential data? Until they come out and say (or demonstrate) otherwise, I just can't get all worked up about this.

(Side note: my state has gone on the record as saying they use anonymous cell phone signals in an effort to track traffic. By combining several of these start/end calculations, they can come up with average drive times that they post on message boards in strategic locations along the highway. This is just another example of us being "tracked" without knowing (or caring?)."

I will never wear a magic band specifically for the reasons they want me to wear one. Being easily trackable throughout the park is not something I approve of. I also don't want to be sent emails with targeted advertising because they noticed I like to ride XYZ ride repeatedly. I like my anonymity which is one of the many things the old fastpass system offered. Knowing that disney has a record of my attraction preferences, food preferences and even the time of day I like to get to the park makes me want to puke.

Then opt out.....of either the use of Magic Bands, or WDW completely. The most fantastic feature of all of this is that everything is optional, including vacationing at a privately (as in, not the government, which is "public") owned and operated resort.

Actually, isn't that in reference to lunch at Be Our Guest, where the Cast Member bringing you your food has, in all probability, not even seen you yet? The roses that they used to hand out had the same function, if I'm not mistaken.

Correct.

Right?! I'm surprised people haven't caught on to this yet. You're not entitled to a Disney vacation or to do anything on their property.

I have to say this... the caterer I work for just went to the World this past weekend, and their concierge at the Contempo gave them unlimited FP+. I know he isn't lieing about it. But why if they can unlock it for "certain" people, can't we do more tha 3? He said they rode so much stuff!

My guess, they are collecting the most detailed information possible and will decide later how to use it.

Correct.
I have opted out of using the magic bands.

If I choose to share data, that's on me, but gathering info without my consent (shady web tracking) is a serious problem.

EDIT: I was quoting the post about selfies and social media; still growing accustomed to this BBS.
