Studio Backlot Tour Closing on September 27, 2014

Revised touring plan for the Studios yet again. Down to 5 rides now. At first FP was not available all day for the Great Movie Ride so I thought it was closed for a wedding event or something. I wasn't going to use a FP+ but the fact that it wasn't there piqued my curiousity. Now Backlot Tour is closed. Not a "Frozen" fan. Suddenly, GMR is again available as a FP+...did someone have to move their party? How ridiculous that the Studios is down to 5 rides.
5 rides...I think we now know what rock bottom looks like. Here's to hoping that the long climb up starts NOW and not 3 years from now. Things have to get better, but that's not saying much right now.

Was there not less rides when it first opened? Although one was the backlot tour which was about 100 hours in length at that time. So probably no good to compare. :)

I never experienced the original version, only the current version which left me completely underwhelmed. Have no issues with them getting rid of it especially if it signals something big and new on the horizon. Of course, depends on exactly what that is. Hoping it's not toy story playland

Has there ever been any talk of retheming Streets of America to Monster's Inc as part of a Pixar Place expansion? If memory serves me correctly, Monstropolis looks like a regular city with regular buildings. Add some monsters looking out the windows, Mike's car on the street, add some more monster theming, replace the theatre with MILF, and then build the door coaster next to it. The other plus is that the Osbourne lights get to stay =)....A lot of people seemed bent out of shape thinking all we are getting is the Toy Story Play Land but it seems like a LOT of space for just that addition. C'mon Disney! Time to wow us all....

Not a bad idea. This is the kind of thing that probably will happen. I could see them looking to utilize some of the existing structures rather than just flattening everything. They could have the Mike and Sully Meet and Greet there and could even incorporate Monsters University somewhere in there. I would like the Door Coaster, but would even settle for a Monsters Inc dark ride similar to the one at DCA. It would make sense to move MILF there too, but I'm not sure they would spend the money to relocate it from MK.

I still think (hope) if they build an area like Toy Story Playland that it won't be necessarily themed to Toy Story. It could have rides representing a variety of Pixar films.

Does anyone know any sites detailing the many changes to the Backlot Tour throughout the years? Something with a lot of pictures like this.

http://www.yesterland.com/erasing.html

Specifically I would like a picture of the original entrance to the watertank section (which can be still seen in the current version, it's just blocked off).

Couldn't you just see them instead making the official announcement that the Tour was going into "seasonal status" to try to avoid some of the backlash, and then they'd just hope that no one would ever notice that its "season" never returned?;)

I think that's known in the trade as 'pulling a River Country'.

This other Yesterland page doesn't have many pictures but does have a lot of good info and should explain the context of what the Backlot Tour used to be, and why some people might see its closure as the end of an era:

Still is, but only if you do absolutely everything. But once the Tour closes, probably not even if you do absolutely everything.

Because of the show times it was very hard to organize it so you catch everything in 1 full day. I think when people call it a 1/2 day park they are usually skipping most or all of the shows and just doing rides. If that's the case it's about a 4 hour park now with the longest ride gone.

As far as i'm concerned, a park is only a "Full Day" park if there is so much to do and see I can't do it all in one day. If I have to literally seek out things to do to and look for reasons to extend my visit to the park, we have a problem.

I experienced the Backlot Tour in its full, original format. As I read through YL's bio on the ride, I keep having flashbacks to those parts of the tour that I had completely forgotten existed. The tour was simply incredible, and had me in full-on brainwash mode, thinking "wow, this IS a working studio."

Even if it wasn't, the attraction was awesome.

As for closing it, I liken it to finally flipping the switch on all the equipment in the hospice room. It's time to go....your quality of life has long since passed....and it's just going to be more painful for everyone if it continues on.

By showing up, you are literally seeking out things to do.

That said, I have spent many a full day there in recent years, without trying hard to extend the day. Granted, this was all when AiE and BLT existed. Typical day, we'd ride TSMM twice, ToT, RnRc, and Star Tours once or twice each. Those 7 or so rides consume about 2 hours of lines and riding, using FP for some. BLT another hour. See IJ and LMA is another 1.5 hours or so. American idol and Muppetvision is another 75 minutes. GMR around 45 min between line and riding. Little Mermaid and Disney junior (I have kids) and there's another hour plus. Animation exhibits, including the academy (always try to hit it) is a little under an hour. Add on one mans Dream, Fantasmic, and lunch and dinner, and I haven't even seen the Jack Sparrow thing, done any meet and greets, seen any street entertainment, shopped, etc and the day is done.

You may not enjoy all those things, but we do. Knock out BLT and AIE and it's probably not a full day, but until a month ago, it was for me.

Not necessarily. As a local, I go to the parks fairly often and can go to Magic Kingdom or Epcot and just walk around and be happy because not only are there things to do (Epcot obviously not as much attraction wise as MK), but there's a lot going on around you in terms of entertainment. DHS is a very bland park to me. I actually do like the park, don't get me wrong, I just wish it were treated better.

My point being, I can go to MK, ride the Peoplemover and see Carousel of Progress and be happy with my day. There aren't any side attractions like those at DHS to let you take a break from the rush of TSMM, ToT and RnRC. I think that is my larger point i'm trying to get to.

Excellent analogy.

I agree, it is a full day experience, and never hasn't been...

However, most of that experience the past few trips has been waiting for show times and waiting in lines.

That's my point, you should never have to wait for show times in order to fill out a day. You should have many choices rather than being limited to waiting for one specific show time in order to stay longer.

I know if you do EVERYTHING at DHS, it can be a full day experience, but most people don't. The majority of people want to ride rides, they don't want to sit and watch a bad stage adaptation of BATB (that's been staged for 20+ years now) or a puppet-ed version of TLM which CLEARLY by the grainy video footage hasn't been updated since opening.

Point is, People want rides. Shows are nice people eaters. Indiana Jones is still a great show and i'll go to bat for it. However, when there are more shows than actual rides in a park, there's a problem.
