Stray Cats at Disney World ??

I've seen feral cats at MK twice. We always wondered if they took the ferry or the monorail to get there.

I know the Stray Cats have never performed at WDW, but Brian Setzer's Orchestra did for one of the Walt Disney Very Merry Christmas Parade tapings back in 2002. Or was it 2003?

I would definitely book a trip to Orlando to see Brian Setzer or the Stray Cats perform. I hear Brian likes to play the House of Blues chain.

But there is nothing mention on Brian's website about the Stray Cats touring near Orlando.

No, Im talking about like stray cats (the pets that usually live as pets in people houses)

I've seen them every time I've ever gone to Disneyland, but never at WDW.

I have seen lots of other wildlife at WDW, however. Fortunately, that has never included snakes, though I know they're out there. (Disclaimer: I have a completely irrational fear of snakes. I'll gladly take my chances with one of the gators any day.)

I don't recall ever seeing one at MK. I also didn't know about the cats at DL until I went there last summer. I was waiting for the train on Main St. and a gray and white kitty just came strolling down the train tracks. It didn't seem to care that there were a bunch of people looking at it and making loud noises. :shrug: I sure hope that the cat had the sense to get the hell off the tracks before it became a flat cat. :lookaroun

You can often see a clowder of cats and a kindle of kittens near the Nine Dragons Restaurant at EPCOT. There’s a different group every time we visit. :wave:

I saw a stray dog once by the entrence to MK and he was wearing a top hat... oh never mind i think it was just Goofy

Yep. I was sitting there that night waiting for the train and watching World of Color happen way off in the distance. Next thing you know this little cat just comes parading down the train tracks. :shrug:

I think WDW is too far away from a huge city to house stray cats...... Remember Disneyland is IN a HUGE city....

Disneyland is in a huge city NOW, but the cats have been there since the 50's. I swear I read somewhere that they were brought in to get rid of rodents, but I can't find where I would have read it. In The Vault of Walt, though, the cats are mentioned as living in the castle in the space that would become the Sleeping Beauty walkthrough.

Yup, they sure do.

The cats at WDW are much less used to humans, though. They don't come out nearly as often. I've seen them several times late night by Splash Mountain, which is where I'm told a large amount of them hang out. Apparently nobody let them know about MNSSHP and EMH's so they come out thinking everyone should be gone and then dart back into Splash.

They are very different from the cats at Disneyland, who aren't terribly afraid of people. The cats at Disneyland will not run away until you get within a few feet, whereas the ones at WDW stay out of sight as much as possible.

Oh, and a few people have asked how they got there - did they swim? The lagoon is only on one side of the MK, it's just for show - MK really isn't on an island or anything.

My only personal spotting was during the day, near the tram stop at DtD. However, they seem to wander more at night. I've seen pictures of them at night near the teacups... I think they really get around.

You are correct. I read somewhere that Walt himself let them stay to control the rodent population.

About eight years ago, I saw an orange tabby taking an afternoon nap on the 4th tier of the Tiki Bird tower. I was just exiting the Jungle Cruise and there he was, plain as day. I asked a couple of CM's if he frequented the area and they told me that they had never seen him before. I checked back a few hours later and he was gone.

While on the bus I saw a gator in the lagoon right outside of AK's Parking lot

We have seen gators every trip. Some at resorts, some in the parks and some in the canals/lakes/ waterways on property. Got pics somewhere of 2 decent size gators in the pond across from AKV from last summer. I have also seen a smaller one in the lake by Everest in AK(got a video of the small guy) and have seen gators in MK and the lake by Beach Club. Seen plenty of snakes(have always seen at the waterparks and other locations), raccoons, deer, turkeys, armadillos, opossums pretty much every year... but no stray cats.

I am sure they have to be there though.

Yup, there are a whole bunch of feral cats around WDW to help control the rodent population. They don't come out often because they are usually afraid of people and spend most of their time in the many wooded areas that surround the resort.

I would never go pet them but they generally won't come near you if you see them at all.

they're mechanical just like the rabbits by cinderella's castle and the ducks that walk around crystal palace...at least that's what we've convinced many a child over they years and sadly more than one adult :ROFLOL:

My fiancé and I, once saw a cat at OKW. but this wasn't your normal cat. Now we take our bikes to WDW every couple of years and ride through the resorts. I highly recommend doing this. Anyway, after we were done riding through OKW, we were cruising back to the hospitality house following the river. A huge cat jumped from out the woods. We both looked at each other in disbelief. It was a Florida panther. Very big and fast. It came out of the woods looked around and took off back into the woods. It was unbelievable. A family in two sea raycers witnessed this as well. We stopped and talked to them, they were in shock as much as we were. We will never forget that day.

Could have been a Panther as they do exist (I have seen them personally here in Florida though not as WDW as of yet)... but it could have also been its far more common smaller cousin: The Bobcat.....
