Which raises probably the film's worst sin, and that's the "Junior Knows Best" trope. Parent's are stodgy old losers, stuck in the past, refusing to get with the times, and their kids need to enlighten them on all that is right and progressive.

Turning Red wasn’t any different than Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Finding Nemo, et al. in that respect. The whole point is Junior doesn’t know best, the young characters make mistakes, and plot points are resolved by negotiations between parents and kids.

I'd say that's a stretch. As a girl, I know many other girls who drew crushes in sexy poses like she did. I never did personally, but I think its cause I am asexual.

I think Disney needs to get back to their bread and butter and keep their agendas out of their movies. People want to be entertained, that's all. What they're doing now is not entertaining. It's evident they've got 2nd rate or 3rd rate people running the show, who don't know what they're doing.

Say what you want about John Lasseter, but this crap wouldn't have happened under his watch.

I generally don't like cities, particularly in North America. But I do like Toronto, and have spent plenty of time there.

This film did not increase my desire to revisit Toronto. It made Toronto look kind of like (shudder) Buffalo.

I do have Covid right now so I’m a little irritable but why does that image of the 4 Turning Red girls with that specific city background that keeps coming up bother me? Like it actually physically upsets me. Haha

After reading up-to-date, now I know what really bothers me. Considering ALL of the possible story ideas available to the creative team (if they really wanted to do sci-fi), the fact that they CHOSE to develop this specific story really makes me question the sanity of Pixar's whole C-suite. Unless they're picking stories using a RND() selection, multiple people sat in multiple meetings thinking how OK this movie was going to be. As opposed to a known (and possibly widely liked) story that would carry name recognition right away. If you start around the 1940's, up through the 90's, there's is more material available than can ever possibly be used. Piper's "Fuzzies" (60's) comes to mind right away. That would work in an animated setting as long as you treated the subject matter other than cutesy.

The convo about box office kinda reminds me of research I did on Stitch a while back. There were a few comments about how Stitch didn't deserve his marketing push because Lilo & Stitch didn't make as much money as "Mulan". Most of those comments came from people that didn't like Stitch as a character, mainly because of the Stitch's Great Escape ride. Yet Lilo & Stitch was the critical and commercial success Disney absolutely needed at that time.

My point is, some movies can do well commercially and critically and have long term lasting fans even if the commercial success wasn't as good as its contemporaries.

Strange World isn't one of those films, but there I think there are a few modern films from Disney that could fit that bill.

See, I loved the backgrounds. I still enjoyed the movie, but the character design was a turn off. The people look like fan art on tumblr with their red noses and bean mouths. No thank you. Strange World had a similarly unappealing and, dare I say, not very Disney, character design.

About a week ago via this thread, I found myself looking at the Strange World characters and I just kept thinking "Why are their noses shaped like a giant boiled potato? Why are they so ugly?"

Instead of discovering pardo, Mr. Clade should have tried inventing rhinoplasty for his world.

I've heard people describe it as looking like the movie "Smallfoot", a movie I have never heard of before.

It’s so obvious people just want that again. Maverick had a pretty diverse cast too but you can always tell what’s being prioritized behind the scenes.

Humans are very smart creatures. We can always sense when something is fake or forced. We might not be able to expound on it or explain why, but we know instinctively when stuff is fake.

And the character development of Strange World seems designed by a Diversity Committee made up of humorless HR ladies who put their pronouns in their email signatures. It's a family unit that instantly reads as fake and forced.

And then when I learned that the family had a 3-legged dog I just said... Ohhhyougottabekiddingme!?!
