Star Wars themed land announced for Disneyland

I would imagine Disneyland will delay releasing the exact plans as long as possible, as they must anticipate backlash.

I noticed Disney Parks Blog didn't release the Star Wars/closures of attractions news on their Facebook page. After they announced Frozen would be replacing Aladdin on Facebook, there were over 500 comments left. Maybe 480 of them were negative ones.

There's so much Patriotic Polyester in this photo that it hurts!

In 1977 they upgraded and formalized the space as part of the Space Mountain project, but it was still a semi-outdoor stage venue for random acts and shows into the mid 1980's. It could work that way again.

It's funny how obvious it is that the original stage was meant to be temporary until Space Mountain was built 10 years after TL '67's debut. When it finally arrived the new Space Stage was glorious. I'll never forget seeing Sister Sledge, Kool & The Gang and the New Mickey Mouse Club there. :joyfull:

It was posted numerous times by the official D23 and Disneyland Facebook pages.

I assume upper management was looking at Frontierland/Rivers of America and was just like, "Well, we got this island which is not inordinately popular and isn't really making any money despite our shoehorning the Pirates movie crap in a few years ago. It's also been a headache for us due to OSHA. Guests can't go there after dusk and then it really isn't making us any money. Then we've got this fleet of riverboats that are expensive to staff and maintain and aren't really making any money, although they are used for Fantasmic, which isn't really making us any money, although it is a popular nighttime show and a guest favorite. Then there's all this excess water that isn't really making us any money. These things only operate during a portion of the day and Fantasmic, which only occurs for like an hour during the evening on the weekends, only really uses the side of the island closest to the riverbank. Star Wars can operate day and night, make money, use less water, make money, draw more people and more importantly, make more money."

Does the shortened river mean that there is possible room for a future Frontierland expansion? I was extremely opposed to the ROA situation, but after thinking about it more, it COULD work. I do feel that it is so disappointing that they're getting rid of a large amount of Disneyland's beautiful ecosystem, but in the long run it kinda makes sense. Now I would greatly prefer toontown's demolition over this. Star Wars better blow us away if this indeed is what's happening.

With the current SWL site plan, I don't know where Frontierland could possibly expand to. SWL would take up previous expansion pads, like Discovery Bay's planned site.

I took a look at the announcement video for SWL that was played at the D23 P&R presentation and something caught my eye that could really actually work well with the Frontier and Critter Country landscape.

I haven't seen it in any artwork other than the SFX video rendering during the announcement, but it shows SWL protected by a barrier of mountains on it's front side. It seems inevitable these mountains (if they are built) will be be visible from Frontierland and Critter Country. If this pans out I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of dry, arid mountains to fit with the old west theme on Frontierland side, while on the SWL side these mountains are the grassy, green peaks seen in the concept art.

Depending on how they/if they pull this off I wouldn't be surprised if it actually improves the environment of Frontierland even with the shortening of RoA. It'll shield that immediate area of the park from the towering alien landscape and buildings while adding some character to Frontierland.

Think of the London to Diagon Alley transition, but on an even bigger and more complex scale.

Here's the scuttlebutt from my friends "inside the berm". The staff shops along Disneyland Drive north of Pooh Bear are emptying out and moving to the "Cerritos Warehouse" at Cerritos and State College in Anaheim, about a mile from the park where Company D, the cast member store, is currently located. The Circle D Ranch cast have been notified that they will be adopting out the goats and petting zoo animals and moving the horses temporarily to Anaheim Hills, approximately 20 minutes away. A permanent home is up in the air.

It is widely assumed that the recycling center, due west of Circle D and north of RoA will move, as well as the horticulture center further west, and against Disneyland Drive and adjacent to the auto entrance to Mickey and Friends. This leaves the Transportation Center (motor pool, if you will) which is directly South of Horticulture and just inside Winston Gate which adjoins the U-Turn you take on the tram leaving the loading area to go South to the Esplanade.

Essentially, If you go west from Toontown and curve around the Rivers of America to Pooh Bear, this is the plot for Star Wars Land. I don't have a thumbnail estimate for the acreage, but I believe it's in the ballpark. It is believed that the Parade Float Building due North of Circle D and the two Entertainment Buildings (N18 and N19) which are due North of Toontown are safe.

Fantasmic! must go down for an extended period because the access to the boat dock for the Princess Barges and TickTock the Crocodile, located between the Indian Village the the DLRR will be landlocked during construction. All the costumes for the performers are trucked in over the railroad tracks every night for the shows.

There are rumors about eliminating all or part of the portion of Tom Sawyer Island North of the Fort, shortening the River, and routing the train on an S-curve down through the Festival Arena then back up around the new back side of the River, but this is pure speculation at this point. Remember the two absolutes are the exit of the train from Splash Mountain and the entrance of the tunnel before Toontown station.

Cast members fervently hope that if any of the previous paragraph is true they would add an access tunnel to the Fort with expanded facilities for Fantasmic! You have no idea what a challenge that is for the cast, techs, and costuming.

One historical note: there is a rumor that the Pope House, which is part of Circle D Ranch, will be located to the TDA Visitor Parking Lot just inside the Ball Road Cast Drive Entrance. This is the house that existed on the Disneyland property when it was purchased and was moved backstage to provide a home for Art Pope and his family as a condition for his hiring as the horse and rigging expert in Disneyland's early years. It now functions as part of Circle D and additional meeting space, which it would continue to provide.

Sadly, if my calculations are accurate, we would lose the original Railroad shed which lines up with the boarded-over tunnel exit behind the waving Indian Chief (Sir Waves-a-lot) on the backside of the River. We lost the original Monorail shed/garage/roundhouse when Roger Rabbit was built.

One detail I noticed--it may be that the towering structures in the Star Wars Land rendering may not back up to the Berm and Frontierland, but rather may be meant to shield and disguise the Mickey and Friends parking structure. If you stand in front of Riverbelle Terrace near the entrance to Pirates and look up-river you can make out the lights of M&F through the trees. This has to be a major concern for Imagineering.

I also don't know what will happen to Hungry Bear as there would likely be a connection from Critter Country to Star Wars Land if my information is correct. It would be a tight squeeze between Hungry Bear and Pooh, but the only restrooms North of New Orleans Square are located there. I would hate to lose Hungry Bear--it's one of the few quiet spots in the park.

Well, that's my two cents. We'll know more in six months to a year as they begin to fence off the construction zone and start clearing land. I'm told by cast members that they are already marking the utilities in spray paint on the pavement backstage and have done some cut-and-cover trenching behind Toontown. We'll see what happens!

I also love hungry bear but feel pretty comfortable it'll be okay since they just completely renovated it. I can't imagine Disney would have spent all that time and money to renovate it to then tear it down a year later.

All of this work, when all they had to do was take out Toontown, a much less loved area of the park in comparison to Frontierland and Critter Country. If a Fantasyland expansion, without Frozen, of course, is in the works, my "upset, angry, and irritated" level will go from a 10 to a 5. Hopefully something like that is happening.

I never bought into the Toon Town expansion simply because it's in the fireworks fallout zone. There's no way they could put Star Wars in that area unless it was all indoors or they'd have to close it early every night.
