...sadly I agree. It may have started out as a "go anywhere and do anything" ride, but they've obviously been tweaking it so Grandma and every 3 year old can push a big flashing button. Sad very sad...it had so much potential.

I'm sorry, but honestly was there really going to be any other way... I know that a lot of people speculated on how the controls were going to work in a "free form" manner. But short of having a 2 hour "flight/gunner/engineering school" prior to actually getting on the attraction, it was always going to have to be flipping/pushing/pulling "flashing" x in order to do y. This was especially true for the gunner and engineering seats. There are just too many buttons, switches, and levers on the Falcon for any normal guest to remember they have to press x in order to do y to be able to complete the mission.

Agreed. I'm not sure what people were expecting? Everyone who ride this thing isn't going to be educated Star Wars nerds, they are going to need some guidance on what to do in a 3 minute ride. Personally I would've been fine they didn't give anyone controls except maybe the pilot. My guess is many people won't even want to interact and just ride it.

Which is why the ride shouldn't have been built 😂

I think some people confuse the "free form" movement in world with the actual controls. So from what I've seen the pilot will be able to move the Falcon 360 degs within the world, but in order to jump to hyperspace for example at the appropriate time the pilot will need to pull on the flashing lever.

Which is why the ride shouldn't have been built 😂

That is like saying that HM shouldn't have been built because some guests aren't into ghosts or haunted houses. ;):p

I think the whole 3D ride phase has already ended. Star Tours TAC opened in 2011 now (jesus already 7 years ago??) and AFAIK they haven't opened a 3D ride in any of their theme parks since and there have been a ton of new attractions they could've added it to including in Shanghai. There were rumors the new Soarin was going to get it (and that would've been pretty amazing) but that didn't come to pass either. And even USH had 3D on Harry Potter when it opened and I don't think that lasted more than a year either.

The 3D ride thing was never really a thing to begin with. Most of the attractions that used 3D glasses were theaters:
  • Muppet 3DV
  • It's Tough to be a Bug
  • Mickey PhilharMagic
  • Captain EO/Magic Eye Theater

Simulators that use 3D
  • SW:TAC
  • FoP

Rides that use 3d
  • TSM
  • Ratatouille

And that's about it. If you count simulators as a 'ride', then in all of WDW there are (going to be) just four out of approximately 50 rides that use 3D glasses.

My hope, if (and that is a big IF) ST stays in TL (or DHS if we're talking about WDW) they get rid of the 3D.

I wish theme park designers would stop trying to make these rides seem "interactive" or stroke the egos of riders like we're all idiotic 6 year olds. None of us are special! And NO, Little Mermaid crab, I didn't have a wonderful time. Can I get a refund? Then shaddup!

Yeah, the best part about rides is when I can be immersed in a setting and have fun for 4 minutes.

Making it interactive means the fun is dependant on me, which changes things since the experience is less consistent

I don't see why not? Just doesn't need everyone to control it. One pilot would be fine like driving the autopia. And I think they want to distinguish it from Star Tours in the sense you can (in theory) go anywhere, so that will make it a more repeatable ride. We'l see how it works.

Obviously I agree. But it was the last 10 years they really started adding 3D to rides but I don't think it really caught on although I think for rides like Star Tours and TSM it's great. I haven't ridden the other rides personally yet.

This ^^^ has me thinking their may be some express lane for engineers or it may be the designated assignment for single riders. It has to be addressed somehow. Or maybe just a point in the Q where the line gets split depending on the position desired. Otherwise it will be Chaos in the loading zone.
