My feeling is the role playing is an option of many options. Some are more into it than others. I only know the characters casually. Many can choose their adventures.
I’m not really interested in role playing either. However, it seems that’s what a large part of this resort will be. People won’t be forced to dress up and pretend they are a real Jedi, but if the entertainment revolves around some aspects of interactive adventures and role playing you will be missing out on a lot of what you are paying for.

First of all, I wanted to comment on the fact that there are really two or three scenarios that we could talk about:
Scenario 1: Disney succeeds in creating an amazing, addictive experience.
Scenario 2: Disney fails to create a truly enjoyable, addictive experience.

It's impossible to explain what scenario 1 will be like, because I'm not sure anyone has done it before. At any rate, I think in scenario 1, everyone will be enthralled, engaged, and addicted to the available experiences. For a person to not enjoy themselves in this case would be like having someone go to Tokyo DisneySea and say that they didn't enjoy any of the rides.

In scenario 2, anything could happen because, well, Disney failed to create fun for the whole family - Star Wars fans and novices alike. All the naysayers could be right in this scenario, because some people will hate it. Heck, even fans could hate it.

Second, has anyone hear tried to plan a multi-day fishing trip? My wife doesn't really like the great outdoors, so she would be automatically out. And let's not talk about touching the fish or the bait. :) Anyway, you can imagine that the idea of a father/daughter fishing trip isn't out of the question, though sometimes the "compensating" day spa expenses are outrageous. Who knew you could spend more than $1000 for half a day at the spa?

Spa and pool? I highly doubt that.
I could see a spa for the upsell value, if they "sold" makeup treatments. And you've got people with money to burn under the roof, so it's a possibility. OTOH, I don't know enough about the number of people they would draw for the treatments if they were truly successful with other immersive experiences. OTOOH, maybe they could sell Hoth Immersion Treatments?

Ageed. A super-fancy, long trip for my family runs about $8500 on the high end including airfare.
Remember, you need to fly first class. :) New York to San Francisco is $3000 per person round trip. Europe is $6000 per person and up.

How much does it cost a family of four for a one week deluxe Disney vacation?
7 nights 2-bedroom suite at the Grand Floridian = $2400 x 7 = $16,800 (whoa!)
Deluxe Disney Dining Plan = $300 x 7 = $2100
7-day park hopper = $490 x 4 = $1960
Round Trip First class New York to Orlando = $600 x 4 = $2400
Total: $23,260

Now I'm sure you'll say that you could get by with a 1-bedroom suite for $1400 a night or even squeeze into a standard club level room for $950 a night. This would get the total price down to $13,000. But I'm also not including room taxes or shopping, which I'm sure could add thousands. o_O

Again, we're not talking "normal" people like you and me here. We're talking about the straw one-percenters.

You should see the money my brother in law spends when he goes out to eat.
There is no concept of value.
Paying over $100.00 each for bottles of wine that go for $20.00 in a store means nothing.
And he'll buy several.
Appetizers, and full entrees for the kids that will only be picked at...
I once saw this guy spend $20.00 for a shot of some scotch which he simply downed.
I agree that I don't like paying more than $100 a bottle for wine, but $20 for a shot of a decent single malt isn't extravagant. Industry standard prices per shot are 1/6th to 1/3rd the price of bottle. So my go-to Oban 14 is $50 a bottle or $9-$16 a pour, while my "special occasion" Bowmore 18 at $80 a bottle is $13-$26 a pour. This is why I prefer to stick with beer when we go out, though I will splurge on a nice bottle of wine every so often - or a "value" bottle more often. :)

And of course all reason goes out the window when dining at Victoria & Albert's.

Someone asking why you even need to drink on vacation in 3... 2... 1...

It's extravagant when you toss it back instead of sipping it.
Not to mention, that the night he downed this shot was before my kids were born so, well over 16 years ago - so $20.00 around the year 1999.

My prediction:
Disney tries to cater to all, landing in some sort of middle ground. This results in the fans who want a serious experience being disappointed and the casual fans being disappointed because it's not a normal deluxe hotel where they can do whatever they want.

I think we've breached maximum princess saturation thresholds in all aspects of everything. Disney needs to focus on other areas, which I think they are. For the first time in years, I don't feel like I'm walking through a pink nightmare in the parks. Even thought Disney is churning out the Elena's, Vampirina, Sophia crap, they're starting to finally focus on other types of characters.

I think they can pull this off. Just because I go to Magic Kingdom it doesn't mean I have to go on Small World. Maybe somebody goes to the Star Wars hotel and want to participate in the VR lightsaber training, but not the X-Wing flight simulator (random activity examples). That's fine and dandy for them, I'm sure there's other things they can do. But you can bet that the serious guests/fans that want to do both will be participating in both, myself included.

A pink nightmare? Wow.

Where do you see this pink nightmare? I want to go there

I have to say I'm really shocked Disney hasn't tried to put together an upscale Princess package along these lines. I know it's not very PC to like the princesses, but as long as people keep having babies, there's going to be a market. Just witness those $300 (or is it $400?) rental carriages.

Bah. I like Sophia, it's a solid series and a lot of clever in there - and if you insist on cynicism, you can treat her like she's in Fight Club - she's the only one who see's and hears the other princesses....

The success of the Star Wars resort could well influence future efforts, but the cost and complexity will keep things to a small number regardless. An Enchancia hotel would be pretty fun for some families:)

I was going to bring up Sophia myself so I was pleased when you did first! I like the episode where she relives her birthday over and over again because things keep going wrong. http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/The_Birthday_Wish

It's obviously derivative of Groundhog Day but they get it right - both in actually being funny and in getting the point about internal transformation.

Right? Where exactly is this pink nightmare? I mean, it's not at DHS, not at AK, not at Epcot. Lots of new stuff coming. None in Pandora, none in SWL, none in TSL. Maybe it's in the MK? Let's see, none in Adventureland, none in Tomorrowland, none in Frontierland. Oh, that's right. There's some princess stuff in Fantasyland. Can't see that there's enough there to call it a "pink nightmare" though.

The pink nightmare exists in most toy departments - in the form of the "princess aisle". (And in the takeover of the castle restaurant...such a shame they had to make that princess central...we used to love dining there.)

We're talking about merchandise? I thought we were talking about attractions in the parks. I'm pretty sure Disney knows what sells and the stock in the stores is a reflection of where people are spending.

And princesses in a castle? That's just crazy. Once again, that's different from park attractions.

And the Christmas short with Donald's nephews. ;)
