Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker Reactions: SPOILERS

Itā€™s also essentially like introducing a new kid into Harry Potter that doesnā€™t need to go to Wizarding School. It may look cool but thatā€™s no reason to throw away established rules. You need to train to be a Jedi and use the Force in these ways. End of story.

That's taking it to the extreme. The point of training is to learn to harness the power, focus it, and learn to control yourself. It's not "you can't do anything without training".

I can't believe we're having this argument about whether or not you need to go to Jedi school to use Force powers post-Baby Yoda. If you're arguing against Baby Yoda, you've already lost.

We donā€™t know what the child has done in the past or what it has been shown. Just because it canā€™t communicate with these people in the show we shouldnā€™t assume it is some naive infant.

We just gotta take these new force abilities with a grain of salt. It's always pushing forward and it doesn't mean X is better than Y. Kanan Jarius from Rebels put up a force field around him and his friends to save them. He definitely isn't more powerful than any of the jedi we are talking about.

You have to be careful with force powers in general I think. If you aren't careful, it will end up feeling to video game-ish. That is my problem with the whole force heal thing. It just feels like a game mechanic. I think I am more forgiving of force powers because of all the star wars video games I have played. But I do get why it can bother some people.

Alright, I went and saw it yesterday. My thoughts:

  • The first part of the movie felt like a disjointed mess. Along with that, the coincidences were kind of ridiculous (oh we fell into a series of tunnels, lets look over here. Oh look, a skeleton. Lets sweep around it. Oh look, a dagger. We can't read it, but we know it's the Emperor's location).
  • The movie got MUCH better as time went on. The ending scene, while I agree it was a ton like End Game, was exciting and fun to watch.
  • The Leia scenes were so odd. I know they were in a huge pinch, and they did what they could, but you could tell the dialogue was completely set up for what she said previously.
  • I kind of wish JJ had the whole thing. The first part felt super disjointed in large part because he had to try and set up his ending. Would have been nice to have Episode 8 as that set up.
  • I actually really liked Rey in this film (way more than I did in 8). I wish she would have shown off more just messing guys up on her own, but I like that she was finally showing some real power.
  • It's been said ad nauseum by now, but this whole thing just feels like missed opportunities. There just wasn't the build of characters. The characters JJ wanted built, RJ did not. The characters RJ wanted to build, JJ wanted nothing to do with. It made it kind of hard to stomach afterwards. Rey could have been an awesome character. Same with Ren. Just feels like the directing did them a great disservice.

One last thing worth mentioning. As I was picking my ticket, 2 things happened. First, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't select my seat. Turned out I was trying to select an already taken seat. I assumed the theater was 75% full, not 75% empty. That was compounded when I overheard a family at the counter. They were trying to get Frozen 2 seats. Turned out that along with pretty much every other movie was sold out. The guy at the counter straight told them the only seats available for any film in the next hour is Star Wars (with the 25 of us that went). They bought tickets for Frozen 2 for later and left.

Which means it won't catch the Lion King remake. Let that sink in. The ending of the Skywalker saga (a Saga that began with an almost year and a half run, created a phenomena, lines that spanned blocks, created an entire convention circuit, has a day of the year named in it's honor, defined film merchandising, created generational characters)....won't catch the a remake of The Lion King. At this point I'm just trying to see if it'll outdo Frozen 2.

The spin machine might as well have ā€œMaytagā€ slapped on it at the point...

Iā€™m talking to Thingie about forecasting in the parks for 2020 as we speak...and the counter argument is ā€œfirst summer of SW:GE...ā€

It just doesnā€™t sink in...Iā€™m sure soon the ā€œit had a 90 minute wait on Christmas!ā€ Is coming šŸ™„

I donā€™t see any conceivable way it tops frozen 2...not with its slowing domestically and traditional Star Wars weaker international numbers as compared to other tentpoles (as a percentage of overall gross)...

It took $15 on Monday, $13-14 on Tuesday, and $17 or so yesterday...

That represents the end of the holiday movie season and the last dayā€™s with widespread free time for the movies.

Itā€™s around $800 overall and looks to be hitting the drop point faster than episode 8 (the Rise of the awful Star Wars management)...

Wow...I thought it would get $1.5 or so at least before it opened...itā€™s gonna be nowhere close.

Just...wow...

Total gross is not gonna be good...so Iā€™ll go ahead and say it now and get out of the way:

ā€œGee...it only made $1.1 billion...how awful...

...did anyone see how immersive SW:GE is???ā€

...now that thatā€™s out of the way...can we move on to second grade discussion?

Already talk about Kennedy moving over into a role at Disney producing Disney+ stuff. Her contract is up in 2021. If she stays on at Lucasfilm she's nothing but a figurehead. No way Triple F (Favreau, Filoni, Feige) are taking any direction from her.

Take it with a grain of salt (as everything you read on the Internet). But this makes some sense - coming from a self-proclaimed "Lucasfilm Insider". Again it's unverified. But does hit on some reasonable points.

Disney announced this morning that ā€œseveral sequel charactersā€ will be featured in season 2 of the mandolorian

Thatā€™s marketing/merchandising damage control...classic disney approach

Who exactly?

Thereā€™s a 25 year gap between this shows events and the start of the sequels.

Actually...let me retcon that:

Itā€™s characters from some movies...but theyā€™re not saying which ones ?

Could go any direction

Iā€™d guess itā€™s OT characters...and the motivations still hold true

Well, if Mando takes place 5 years after RotJ...by process of elimination we can say not Rey, Fin, or Poe. Possibly 3PO, R2. Knowing Disney, we'll get a younger version of Holdo. I would think the following are fair game:

Maz
Lando (probably Glover not Williams)
Maybe a de-aged Mark Hamill
Chewie without Han (maybe references to Han - or certain camera angles - stand-ins from a distance or only shots from behind - or even Alden - I hope not).

However, thinking more about it. Favreau is the kind of guy that would bring Snoke back. That I'm all for. Knights of Ren?

Any others?

No I get it, I didn't like the game the forced unleashed because of all these over the top abilities. Jedi are awesome, but they aren't marvel superheroes, so I would have left force abilities to a minimum. I just reconcile with myself (lol) that these newer and cooler force abilities are just the story boards evolving with each new expansion.

I bet Luke becomes a bounty that Mando has to go after, only realizing this is the guy who can help with baby Yoda...
