Wow, 50 years or so and he hasn't aged a bit.
Yes, and the Uncle Remus character is no where to be found, his portrayal as a subservient character is the route of most of the film's controversy.
To be clear, you should say that some people interpreted him as a racial caricature; it was always denied that he was intended as any kind of racial caricature. Personally I don't find him a racial caricature; having seen films with Stepin Fetchit, Mantan Moreland, etc., it's pretty easy to see the difference!Jar Jar Binks is a racial caricature. They won't use him for that reason.

Yea the ride is really only "inspired" by song of the south. It has none of the human charecters or anything to do with the main storyline in the film which was the bulk of the movie right there.
All they really used from the movie are the 4 cartoon charecters (brer rabbit, bear, fox, frog), some of the songs, and the setting. The rest of the ride is more of a sequel to the Disneyland ride America Sings and in Disneyland it recylces 90% of the AA's from that attraction.
It's almost guaranteed (knowing Lucas and ILM) that the new film will be 100% digital CGI rather than based on models (used in the original ST film). The problem with that is, the eye and brain can subtly detect the "fakeness" of CGI over actual props and thus it registers as far less convincing on a subconscious and conscious level.
Ask yourself the last time a 100% CGI monster in a film was scarier than a physical make-up, model, costume or prop, e.g., the make-up-based Thriller or London werewolves versus the digital Harry Potter werewolf. The most convincing dinosaur shots in Jurassic Park were the animatronic ones, not the CGI. The model-based space battles of the original Star Wars trilogy are far more believable and fun than the all-digital ones of the prequels. The rubber shark in Jaws is still 10 times more affecting than the expensive digital sharks in that Sam Jackson movie.
My point is, there is serious potential for a digital-effects-based 2009 Star Tours to be less convincing on a several levels than the special- effects-based 1987 Star Tours. Probably best to keep your expectations in check.
Well, the space battle in episode 3 was very convincing and if they can carry that quality onto the ride, then I'll be satisfied.
If we are visiting Life Day then I want to see a cameo for Bea Arthur. It might be fun to visit say, Kashyyyk for the life day celebration, or Naboo for some reason, but still be post galactic empire.
For the record, the newer Star Wars films still used plenty of models, background plates, and matte paintings blended seemlessly with the digital effects (see the Mustafar Battle).
Things done practically and in-camera are still cheaper and can look great too tied togetherh CGI, so depending how they want to go about doing the new film for the ride, or what the story will involve, will determine how much CGI will be used. But that isn't to say that the ride will be 100% computer effects.
ILM did Davey Jones, he was pretty convincing. I noticed a vast improvement in ILM's work in Pirates 2 and 3 compared to pirates 1. They are constantly improving and inventing new techniques. Can't go cheap though. :animwink:
One advantage an all "Digital" production should have is the possibility of different story lines being produced for each simulator. Not sure if that is what they will do but it would be easier to make 6 different 5 minute "films" in a computer. What it will definitely mean is that they should, at the very least, be able to offer an updated adventure every couple years. Then we will be talking about Star Tours III eventually and then Star Tours IV etc etc. with a new film every 2 to 3 years (sound familiar)
Another interesting thing I found out is that, according to Martin's documentary, when they put together the rdie film for Star Tours the length of the footage was 20 minutes! Realizing this would be too long for a theme park ride they took only the very best elements and cut it down to 3 minutes and they felt that was too short of an adventure so they brought it up alittle bit to 4 minutes.
