SSE Planetarium

I love planetariums! I even worked in one during college. I've never considered the star projection in SSE to be of typical planetarium quality because the stars can be hard to see (maybe I'm still blinded by the FL light even by then) but I understand it does in fact have a stellar projector.

Does anyone here know what kind of projector that is? I'm guessing its not a hardcore Zeiss model like in many of today's planetariums.

Also, do you know if there used to be a spaceshi...JUST KIDDING.

The projector was custom built for SSE. I've got the manufacturer somewhere.

I've always found the brightness to be fine. Assuming the ball has been dusted recently!

Although the projections of the Stars are bright, they are still slightly out of focus or have a slight "bleed over" effect. If this were an elipsoidal fixture I'd suggest the use of a donut to correct this. But obviously this isn't going to help on this fixture.

I think I'm in the minority of people who can't see the stars that well. I also can't remember the last time I rode it without flash photography going on at that part either (note, I only ride it a bunch of times every two years when I visit).

I'll just say it could be much better, it always bugs me when the cars turn how bad the edges are especially on the right side you lose the space effect. I do love space ship earth. My favorite part is the smell of the fire.

Its too bad you dont get a decent presentation of the stars. A better viewing would enhance that part of the attraction and could be stunning.

I've also been a little underwhelmed by the stars lately, though I wondered if it was just wrapped in with my feelings about the descent. It's too bad they covered up the space station, which added so much to that scene. I know it's been gone for years, but I believe it's still up there and just covered. It doesn't make sense to me not to use it.

The focus is now on the planet earth as viewed from outer space. After all the attraction is named Spaceship Earth and the focus is how magnificent our planet looks from out there. Up close it loses a lot of it's attractiveness. So now you ride to the top and see just how fantastic that planet Earth should be and was before people messed it all up.
