SSE changes (narration, ending)

Thanks for the update merf! I'm glad to hear the narration is getting some tweaks. I always loved the Irons and Cronkite versions and was starting to get worried when I heard the Dench version the first few times. I can't wait for somebody to go back in and re-record the audio!

The earth projector was changed in 1994; the old image was smaller than the current one (the 1994 update also introduced twin projectors for earth)

I was told there was also a new starfield projector built for the 2007 rehab; if recently the starfield appears a lot clearer perhaps it has now been fitted?

But that's not all - there are lots of changes in Dame Judi Dench's narration.

"Remember how easy it was to learn your ABC's? Thank the phoneticians - they invented them."

"...think of it as the first backup system, (paraphrased) the books were saved and thus our dreams for the future."

(180 top reveal) "....creating the next 30 thousands years together, on this, our Spaceship Earth"

(ending interactive start) "Want to have some fun with the future? On your screen..." (It's paraphrased, but I know she says "fun" which she never said before)

And that's just the parts I remember off the top of my head. Many new little bits of lines added, all in all making her spiel far less flippant and childish sounding. Audio is up higher in all scenes, could only hear narration of the vehicle directly behind me and that was just barely.
Mousermerf, could you possibly contrast the new changes with what was previously said in the narration? I can't really make out which words or phrases are new.:veryconfu

I took a couple pictures in SSE of the old props and whatnot and here's a picture of the spaceship with the window of the girl.

Martin- Everything from the 1994 Irons version of the space station remnants is there including the ceiling. However I believe a bit of the details have been lost as there have been holes and nails installed in them and the blue lights now hang from them.

thereason-14,

You may know what we mean by the girl in the window, but just to back track, it's become a bit of a joke here on wdwmagic after the surprising things we found on our spaceship earth planeterium/180top thread.

Like you've said, in the jeremy irons version you entered a large dark area with the floating television news screen in front of you and the floating classroom to your left. Once you just past the floating television, one would have had to turn completely around in their seat to see what was behind their vehicle, and sure enough on a wall right over where the vehicles are exiting the scene and entering a new scene is a giant 10ft or so 80s futuristic prop mounted to the wall. The glowing light from the floating classroom would illuminate the window prop making it easy to see. I saw it just fine in January 2007.

This was an exterior window and wall panneling left over from the first 2 versions of SSE. You actually entered a space station, with an astroanut taking a satelite repair part from 180top into the space station, and a satelite dish hooked to a mechanical arm with an astronaut working on the satelite dish. There was some various electronic blinking lights, some other dim lightning, etc...however one would have noticed a bright light source from their back right, and when looking behind them to see what it was they saw a girl staring out the window at the astronauts, she even waved to them every so often.

In the 1994 the space station was no longer used. The two astronauts, satelite repair part, and satelite dish were removed, along with all the lighting and much of the panneling. Leaving only the space station ceiling and window prop now all painted black.

The window itself that the girl looked out of was actually a small square window, but inside a larger rectangle covered with most likely plexiglass. I doubt the girl was removed from the window, but rather the window itself was just painted over black and you can't see inside.

Now as for the present day, I honestly don't know how easy it is to see the window prop. I only could see it because I was evacuated from the descent and my eyes adjusted to the dim evacuation lighting as well as my camera flash could atleast illuminate the prop for me to see, but couldn't focus and take a flash picture.

So now when riding SSE a soon as you enter the corridor of endless blue lights in the planeterium, look behind you in your seat. Now you are facing the other backwards cars as they make their way out of the old space station scene. Above the cars exiting the old space station scene will be the window prop. It's large and massive and takes up an entire wall. I don't know how many blue lights cover the window, or how much the blue light will even illuminate the window, but it should be clear that something dark and big is in that space and sure ain't the yeti cause he's in the animal kingdom!

Oh and remember to wave to the girl and sympathise with her as she has not had a bathroom break or a lunch break since 1994. :lookaroun

Oh ok, lol. I will still try and look out for it in just a few days. :sohappy:

Thanks for that though.

I wanted to add this, but don't want to get a hoopla going if i'm wrong - but the starfield in the 180 looked really good. Could of just been my excitement over the narration changes wanting there to be more - but it seems like it was either cleaned or changed or something. The stars usually have a distinct look that gets sort of "fuzzy" toward the lower edges by the vehicles. They looked like very clean and bright pinpoints of light throughout.

The premiere (IMO) planetarium projectors are prduced by Zeiss, a German company although not affiliated with Siemens. I had assumed that the refurb would include adding a state of the art projector by Zeiss. Anyone (Marni) know who made the original projector? Also, has it been replaced?

Going back to 1981 press releases, the original projector was custom built by WED since the diameter and height of 180top was too large for a normal planerarium projector. Now if that means cutom built from scratch or in cooperation with a third party I can`t say. Iwas also told a new projector was delivered last year to replace the 25 year old model.
I still cannot picture the spaceship and the little girl.
PLEASE don`t make me go through each page of the 180top thread....!!! :D Okay... it had to happen. Here`s a new composite of SSEs Core interior in 180top from 1982-1994; little girl on the right:

Ah,thanks.I wonder when they've kept Earth as a simple projection when they could have made it a model.

Is it true that there building a show scene/set in the descent? I was under the impression they were just going to be cheapos and put up some glowing tiangle things to look at for the people that don't want to play with flash animation for the umpteenth time.

the only problem is that in order to install more things in the descent or even an actual scene, they will have to evict the chickens that cluck around the chicken wire and the angler fish that hang out with their blue orbs on

Merf, call me crazy... but I could swear the narration had those lines you mentioned when I rode on April 7th. I know I definitely remember the ABC's line and the backup system part. The ride was down that Sunday, April 6th most of the day, and I rode it the next.

I think what he is trying to say is that those lines have been tweaked.

I know... I just think I might have heard the newer version a week ago. I heard the "Thank the Phoenicians for that" part... I think.

yea me too. It doesn't sound like anything has been changed. Perhaps the first few times Merf rode it the audio was skipping.

You guys are confusing the old with the new. I'll go ahead cut and paste and highlight. Highlighted parts will be the new script.

---

"Remember how easy it was to learn your ABC's? Thank the phoneticians - they invented them."

"...think of it as the first backup system, (paraphrased) the books were saved and thus our dreams for the future."

(180 top reveal) "....creating the next 30 thousands years together, on this, our Spaceship Earth"

(ending interactive start) "Want to have some fun with the future? On your screen..." (It's paraphrased, but I know she says "fun" which she never said before)

I know for a fact I heard "the books were saved and thus our dreams for the future" back in early March.
