HA, and for me it was the last I would ever watch of the remakes. I absolutely hated it.
It was the most frustrating remake of them all. The original is pretty much perfect story wise, they didn't need to add crap about women not allowed to read (which was historically inaccurate, the original Beauty and the Beast was published for women), the parents' backstory, the plague, the nonsensical book of teleportation. None of those mattered to the story.

And the cast was horrible. Belle and the Beast didn't have any chemistry, and all of them couldn't sing. Only Luke Evans as Gaston was good.

Imagine a Beauty and the Beast adaptation with Emmy Rossum as Belle and Josh Groban as The Beast (his version of Evermore was superior).

Alan Menken was the highlight of this remake - his score was great and this is the only remake where the new added songs are actually good.

I fell asleep on it in the theater, and left early when I woke up. Never happened before or since!

Always thought I would rewatch at home, but never bothered.
SAME!!! We saw it on a cruise and I legit fell asleep during it.

HA, I agree with about everything you said, except I didn't like Gaston either. Partly unfair to Evans, cause for me, Gaston is the greatest voice Disney animation has ever used, so no way anyone was living up to it. But his voice didn't come across well for me, and he's not big enough to get away without the voice for me. Anyways, I'll stop derailing the thread any further. Will be curious to see if others go to Snow White this coming weekend (personally I have no desire to see it, but I'm still curious to see what people think of it).

It boggles my mind sometimes how bad Disney can drop the ball. These people that work for Disney are getting paid how much? 9/10 of people here could have taken a look at the description of the movie below and told you that the movie would Bomb.

Princess (Snow White) joins forces with (scary uncanny valley CGI) dwarves to liberate (🙄) her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen.

I’ve said this before but I’ll repeat they HAD to go this route with Snow White to mix it up a bit. It’s honestly a breath of fresh air to have a heroine for once. Elsa/ Anna x2 Judy Hopps, Moana x2 , Raya, Mirabel, Asha, Rey, Captain Marvel, the new super hero Bo Peep from Toy Story 4 etc were all boring stereotypical damsels in distress so it kind of made sense to do something fresh and reinvent the old dated Snow White so she could appeal to modern audiences.

How were any of those characters “damsels in distress “?

Sarcasm aside, this is hardly the first time this particular story has been told as a non-damsel in distress story. Snow White has been told many a times, both as a damsel and as a heroine.

We've even had Disney themselves tell it in Once Upon a Time a decade earlier, which by most accounts was done better. So clearly they thought they could do it again. And its just that so far it hasn't worked out with this particular take on the story. But that to me doesn't mean that Disney shouldn't try to make more takes on old stories. Just that they need to be better.

Exactly why ? All of the recent female presenting characters are at the top of their respective feudal or tribal hierarchies have not been "damsels in distress" for decades. If anything, this archetype has been over represented and is tired in modern media. Nothing new no matter how much the producers and actors claim it is, its been done and redone to excess.
