Nothing. I think they thought they were going to, and then stopped.
They may have done some minor welding to shore up what was already there, but I don't think they ended up replacing any parts. The crews did indeed believe that they were going to do a full track replacement, they even marked a ton of areas on the support beams with yellow paint that were intended to be cut. Marks that can still be seen to this day when the work lights are on. I think the estimation was that it would be closed for 24-30 months. There was a last second change of plan.

In an attempt to prolong the life of the aging track, they also installed trim brakes back in 2013 that were intended to reduce the amount of wear and tear the vehicles exert on the aging track structure. It had the unfortunate effect of making the ride even more rough, and also slowed it down significantly. This is most noticeable on the drops.

The break before the last drop is the worst. It was more thrilling without it.

Meet The Robinsons and Tomorrowland were two Disney films that sadly had no success... Nothing from either film will probably ever be used...and they were both good in lots of ways.
But remember; " Keep Moving Forward!" Disney probably won't use the actual movies, because they didn't make it $wise. We know that the message is still in use in "some" of the WDC. The "Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana" is one, small technical advances, but still "Moving Forward". If the bean counters and executives in positions that have NO business being there would get out of the way, Magical things could happen. The talent IS there, just let it flourish!

I am 100% in favor of the re theme and I agree with you.
Posting in here so the other thread stays on topic. I'm just curious why you are 100% in favor of the retheme. I'm not picking on you, I'm just curious for your reasoning, and 100% is such a strong number.

Thank you for clarifying in case we accidentally took your post as not snarky.
My intention wasn't snark, it was honesty - I have no reason to believe Disney has any short or medium-term plans to retrack Space Mountain at WDW. I say that based on both how they've historically behaved and also word about town; there are plans in the works for WDW and no one I've spoken to has hinted at anything significant for Space, despite the track being near or past the end of its natural life cycle.

That suggests they'll only get around to it when they have to, which is exactly what happened with Space Mountain at Disneyland in 2003. That could very possibly be this decade, but they aren't preparing for that in any significant way at the moment.

Rumors tend to swirl when new attractions come online about nearby attractions finally getting some love - Peter Pan was rumored to get a major refurb when Little Mermaid opened, Everest when Pandora opened, now Space since TRON's open. But these rumors almost never come to pass and I have no reason to think they're planning anything different this time. Even though they should be.

I could see them waiting to see how Tokyo's new version turns out before they do anything to ours too.

My understanding is that Tokyo is essentially getting Cosmic Rewind in place of their old Space Mountain - I'm fairly certain WDW won't be taking many (if any) lessons from what they do there.
Oh really? That's interesting. I'm glad they're getting something like that because Cosmic is fuuuuun. But I was hoping it'd be original so WDW can steal it. 😂

Since the only time these aging MK rides get any money put into them is if they're considered "problematic"* maybe we can start a campaign that says Space Mountain and Carousel of Progress are so they can get refurbed sometime soon? ;)

*except Peter Pan's Flight for some reason
We need to start saying current Journey Into Imagination is "problematic" as well.

Don't give up hope! Despite being a commercial failure, the Princess and the Frog now has an E Ticket ride at both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom, a restaurant at Disneyland, a shop at Disneyland, and more on the way I'm sure!

Princess and the Frog has Tiana. A Disney Princess™️, she bolsters the “brand” by being represented. Meet the Robinsons and Tomorrowland do neither of those things
