So someone posted this blog, from a casual park goer, husband and wife, with 2 kids.. on their WDW vacation. these people aren't disney fans, just regular vacation goers.

"...Oh, and we watched the 1980's movie "Captain EO" with Michael Jackson. It was creepy. Mostly because this is clearly the forgotten park and you can tell no real effort or money has gone into making this park worthwhile for people to go to. You never hear anyone say, "Man- Epcot was a blast!!". You know why? Because it's not. It's a huge disappointment and at $371 or so for us to get in? Should have went to another park. Or Sea World. *sigh*..."

http://strandupdate.blogspot.com/2013/07/vacation-day-2-epcot-or-bust.html?m=1

I find the entire post very telling of what I keep hearing from people about WDW, and the general sentiment of the product.

Oh this is golden. Couldn't be more lame if she tried. Don't eat things you can't pronounce because you're ignorant? Then you deserve the cafeteria food!

And there is a Hess down the road that will sell you a case of water for 5$ instead of 200$ The difference will more than make up for the rental if you don't have one.
Sorry, but for the general public to "get it" there needs to be something there to get. The whole front of the park doesn't make any sense, it's as if the entire area was thrown together. It's disjointed to say the least. The world showcase is a glorified marketplace and bar with a little substance if you can battle the booze crowds together to it.

I'm really tired of hearing how people "just don't get it". No, we get it, it's a cash grab. Unless we can jump into a time machine and go back to the 80s, we won't "get it" the way you do, or want "us" to.

/rant
I don't think the author would get it even if she went back to the 80s. Some things just don't appeal to people, and that's okay. When they start trying to please everyone is when we run into the state we are in now, where nothing pleases anybody.

And I know how to "do" the park, as does everyone else here.

Start in Canada, buy a drink in each country (except maybe Morocco), finish up in Cava de Tequila. Agreed, thought this was common knowledge.

Of course, those silly tourists who have been conditioned by Fastpass to think everything in Disney is "Wait in line, ride the ride, but the T-shirt on your way out through the gift shop" might be a bit confused on that.

Would agree that it was obvious she did no planning or research beforehand. I mean, my God, she was buying a bottle (or two) of water for her family every time someone was thirsty? I know people do that, but what an avoidable waste of money.

I agree $200 on bottled water seems a bit crazy. However, it's also nice to be reminded that, in Flyover Country, $75 for warmed-over fast food for a family of four is ridiculous. Yeah, we all know better, but far more average guests than WDWMagic readers in the parks every day.

Spirited Friday Musings (this time featuring paragraphs for a certain MAGICal member):

So, anyone want to go back and pull the post -- because I don't have a clue where I posted it -- that said Disney would be lifting Maingate MK blockouts by about the second week in July?

It's not so much that I love being right, as I like people to notice it.

Apparently, UNI and IOA are actually busy this summer although right now that is simply anecdotal evidence from some keen eyed pals in O-town. I am looking for actual numbers.

WDW isn't having anything close to a typical summer and history shows that it gets slower and slower there post July 4th. There's a reason when free dining was first offered, it was in mid-August.

I started reading that blog from 'I hate EPCOT' tourist, but realized soon in that she came off as nothing more than dumb white trash with too much money to spend. I'm guessing she or the hubby has a good government job like with the NSA.

Folks can have legit complaints about EPCOT or any park, but she just came off as stupid as dirt. I did see that Scarlett Ashley (yes, the one with manchild Tom Wannabe Lou Corless) came in and called her on the bottled water prices, although it's a wasted effort. I don't have a great deal if respect for anyone who can't either drink from a water fountain or ask for a cup at a QSR. If you truly spend $200 on bottled water, you have no value for money and have lost all right to about the prices of anything in my Spirited book.

I don't care how good some folks are saying Pacific Rim is. It still looks to me like Transformers. I have watched the trailers. Nothing says emotion or characters. It all says explosions and giant metal toy-like creatures fighting it out.

See, how that works? People don't want to see Lone Ranger allegedly because they see PotC when they see trailers that -- other than Johnny Depp -- in no way resemble that series. But for someone who never saw Transformers because they looked like loud crap aimed at 12-year-old boys, well so does Pacific Rim.

Yes, I've heard Figment will have a place in the new Imagination pavilion, but i wouldn't take that to mean the attraction is going to be based upon the character. No, I am not hiding any information. I just think people jump to conclusions.

So, we are how many months into Disney's new and amazing MM+ and I am so glad all our concerns were wrong or misplaced and so happy that it has made visiting WDW so much easier and more MAGICal. How about you?

Again, the economy isn't better for average people. Unemployment and suicides are two figures that you never are told the true numbers because the government doesn't want you to know (of course, it has been shown that the government doesn't want you to know anything about anything because apparently you can't handle knowing anything. I won't post the link here. But go read this week's Economist about our 'other government', it will make you want to grab your passport and run!)

How much money are we talking about for Bruckheimer and Depp in Pirates 5 and 6? Is it the difference between $50 and $100 million collectively between the two? Is it more? Is it less? What did Lone Ranger need to make for the paydays for Pirates 5 and 6 to still make sense?

There is no connection between TLR and the PotC franchise. And there absolutely is no guarantee there will be a sixth film. Frankly, if people are as tired of the franchise as folks here have used as an excuse for TLR's less than stellar box office, then why even make a fifth film?

Ironically, I believe the second (or was it the first?) iteration of the scrip did have a lot more supernatural elements. But Disney balked at the price tag and so a decent amount of sequences (and werewolves) went... And yet the thing still cost $225 million to make. Now who says Disney can't mismanage money with the best of them? ;)

To be fair, industry insiders will tell you the film actually cost $275 million.

A character in odd make-up and a strange hat with a weird vocal cadence, initially introduced as an outlaw but soon revealed to be a mentor with a heart of gold. Motivated throughout the film by revenge, even carries a token to remind him of his quest (tho we don't learn what it is until the third act). May be crazy, or that may just be an act to cover up the fact he's a genius thinking 5 steps ahead of everyone else, because his convoluted plans always end up working.

Yeah, no comparison whatsoever.

(And again, I really liked the movie!)

I understand what you are saying, but having similar traits (that come out in vastly different ways) and character arcs are common in filmmaking ... I never once looked at Tonto and thought Captain Jack is playing in the Wild West.

Except Lone Ranger IS a tonally deaf, messy Pirates knock off and Pacific Rim is nothing like Transformers.

And yes, I've seen both.

Unfortunately as much as I would like to see The Lone Ranger in the theater I doubt I will because of horrible timing. Ticket prices are such these days that I can't justify seeing 3 in the span of a month and between Monsters, TLR, and Pacific I'm sorry but TLR will be the one I drop. As much as I want to see a new western it cannot compete with a rocket punch.

Can't agree more with your first point. Not to mention the war they are fighting is the wasteful and oppressive drug war.

Also, Theme Park attendance is never a good indication of economic growth as its mostly foreign travelers with great economies.

The first point wasn't so much about the ridiculous drug war, but more on the fact that we have been militarizing our police. They aren,t out to protect and serve us. And they often start violence instead of being there to stop it or prevent it. This is all part of the post 9/11 mindset. People shouldn't fear men and women with badges, but smart ones do today. Again, just part of our very screwed up 21st century society.

As to the second point, I have a strong feeling that internationals are down this summer. Folks from Europe and South America have been able to make up for the disappearing American middle class ... But that doesn't seem so much the case this summer. Unless internationals have just tired of WDW and are still hitting UNI and SW, but that doesn't seem right.

Regardless of her being dumber than dirt, she fit TDO's target demographic. Family with disposable income, who won't be disposing of their income at WDW in the future. That to me was the important takeaway.

My brother keeps trying to persuade me to go see this as part of MY birthday celebration this weekend as I get to pick the movie to go see with my family... Something about how he'll at least graciously pay for me to go to the movie he really wants to see, but not me. Such a wonderful brother I have, attempting to bribe me so subtly. ;)

Now me on the other hand.. I'm leaning towards a repeat viewing of The Lone Ranger or Despicable Me 2. So @thedreamfinder, it is now your job to convince me that my dear brother is actually right, and I should be seeing Pacific Rim. I look forward to your thoughts ;)

Happy B-Day. I think folks with Birthdays this week are VERY special Spirits!:)

and a d23 announcement is still not looking good? i would think they will most likely announce it before sept 30 so it will seem crazy if they can't get their crap together and they end up announcing it like a week or so after d23. but i suppose we are kinda waiting on the board members??

I would guess we hear something about something before October 1st ... That's about as specific as I feel comfortable getting with Disney.

Again, the economy isn't better for average people. Unemployment and suicides are two figures that you never are told the true numbers because the government doesn't want you to know.

The economy is abysmal. And the "recovery" is the biggest joke since when President Ford was passing out "Whip Inflation Now" buttons to his cabinet. (I just dated myself.) The paltry jobs added each month, almost all part-time low-skill labor, aren't enough to keep up with birth rates let alone put the tens of Millions still looking for a job back to work. So of course that's going to have an impact on WDW attendance, especially when there's nothing to pull in those who do have money.

And that leads me to this thought.... All this MagicBand Fastpass+ system rubs people the wrong way because it wasn't created by storytellers. The best additions to Disney theme parks, and the things that make the parks so famous, were all created by minds who are showmen and storytellers. NextGen was created by minds who are not showmen and who are not storytellers. And thus, it's place as a central feature of a WDW vacation is rotten.

And finally, The Economist is the best news magazine out there. It was very good in the 20th century when there were still other news magazines, but now that it's really the only one left it's even more important. Do you care about the world beyond your local Golden Corral? Go read The Economist.

Thoughts on Pacific Rim:
This film is in the tradition of the great summer blockbusters like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, 2001, etc. Pacific Rim has a fantastic sense of wonder and feeling that these big films, all films really, need in order to connect with the audience. We don't love Raiders of the Lost Ark solely for its excellent action sequences, but for the great characters and the staging of events to heighten our emotions. In Pacific Rim, there is a scene which brings us into the horrors of the Kaiju in such a manner that you simply connect with the character's fears on a visceral level. Guillermo del Toro make her fears become your fears. Moments like this are what makes Pacific Rim special. Yes, on its surface it can appear to be a Transformers (more like Gundam tbh)/Godzilla knock off, but it's the little touches that make this film spectacular in the way those great films made us feel.

The fight scenes in this film are very beautiful and visceral. Guillermo del Toro and his team have not only designed these amazing Jaegers and Kaijus, but they have made them feel large and massive with an understanding of scope that makes these fights believable within this universe. I'll say no more because these fight scenes have so many surprising and fun moments that you haven't seen in the promotional materials.

The cast is really good. The main character, played by Charlie Hunnam, is ok in a Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker way, but much like Star Wars, you will be more interested in the film's other characters. Idris Elba (from @Lee's The Wire) and Rinko Kikuchi's (Babel) characters are the emotion center of the film and are just fantastic. The comic relief provided by the two scientists played by Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as well as Ron Pearlman's Kaiju organ dealer can be silly and a little nerdy, but still fun and accessible.

So I really loved the film, easily the best "Hollywood" film that I have seen this summer. (Before Midnight and Frances Ha currently are my overall favorite films this summer) It's the kind of film that audiences subconsciously want, but rarely get. I saw it in IMAX 3D and it looks and sounds spectacular. (The 3D in this film, a post conversion, has received the James Cameron seal of approval) Simply put, see Pacific Rim, it's the best film of the summer and we need to encourage the studios to take creative risks and entrust the best and brightest filmmakers to dream BIG and SMART.

@bubbles1812, I hope I've persuaded you to give PR a shot. :)

Stupid, or smart? That rediculous article sure did do a great job driving traffic to her lifestyle blog.

To me, she seemed like the model of who disney should be appealing to. And for the record, I've argued everything she's said in regards to lack of things to do, lack of shade and places to sit. Also the overall feel of Epcot. Does that make me a rube too? It was my first time there this year. Did it appeal to me? Absolutely not. But for the reasons she stated, not because I "didn't get it". I thought I got it until I got there.

Anyways, disney should read that. Her family is who they should be out to impress and want to keep coming back, so they'll have something to talk/ about in twenty years when a new management takes over and jacks up the park. You know, like you guys. Sorry to sound hostile, but really....y'all who've been going to Epcot for years and years don't understand why people don't "get it" because you did, and from the beginning. The park is a different park now. It's Epcot 2.0. You just can't expect people to "get" Epcot 1.0 when they never experienced it.

/rant for the second time today, over the same topic. I swear this'll drive me to drink wine for dinner tonight
