i don't really have a question about the show but am just looking for some empathy as i've been roped into going to a 5pm spirit of aloha show in the middle of august. can i hear some sympathy oooooing and aaaaahhhhhs..... lol.

my granddaughter and i are very close. when she was really little she thought disney was hidden and only grown up princesses (aka me) could take new princesses (her) to find it...worked out well for me lol so over the years she likes to just slip in once in a while with a "take me to disney..." i've taken her for several trips always with other family members, 2 with multiple day stays and a lot of one day trips so when she said it last week i thought i'd just freak her out and say ok for a trip with just the two of us and let her (with sneaky guidance from me) plan the trip. we're staying at the poly so now she's telling everyone we're going to hawaii :lookaroun and is all into anything in the hawaiian/polynesian theme...thus the booking of the spirit of aloha show.

i've never been but i can read and have read a LOT of posts on these boards lol...

so i know it's a long show, the food is...well...it is what it is  and it's going to be hot as hades :fork:...and the only people i could vent to were my fellow disney fanatics. maybe i should have started this thread with "dear disney diary tell me i'm not alone..."

I really enjoyed the food when I was there last week.

I say go with an open mind and a positive attitude and come to your own conclusion after that.

Yea get the drink they serve in the coconut monkey head and enjoy the show. I am sure your daughter is going to love it and when we were there in June of last year it was not too hot at all once the sun went down and there was a nice breeze.

Its really not that bad. Everyone should at least do it once. Like others have said..go with open mind and enjoy. Take advantage of the ALL you can drink (if that is for you). Seeing how hot it will be at 5...I would take a refresshing COOL shower before going so you are not starting our hot and sticky. Its undercover (for the most part) and surrounded by trees. Enjoy the time with your granddaughter and let us know what you thought when you return!!!

It's an ok show. The story line is kinda cheesy but some of the dances they do are entertaining. I enjoyed the food myself. Certainly worth a first time viewing for the experience.

Last time we went was May 2006, evening of our wedding day at the Poly. Right after the show started it started to pour down raining. The rest of the show was cancelled, but they still served dinner. They even refunded back the purchase to everyone. That was nice.

I liked it well enough. Free alcohol is good, and the fire dancer at the end of the show is really spectacular.

It's pricey, and I think that's why there are a lot of negative reviews. When people pay a lot their expectations are raised. It's not gourmet food, and it's not a Broadway show. If the money doesn't bother you, just relax and enjoy it. We were on a free dining plan, so all we cared was that it was a reasonable use of credits compared to other places we could have gone.

My advice?

Drink.

Heavily.

It'll make the show (and "food" they peddle on you) more bearable.

They don't pull you onstage at Aloha do they? I took this advice(Drink Heavy) when at Hoop De, and was pulled onstage at the end while I was more than half in the tank, I have since said to my wife "if I had gotten sick on stage, would I have been the first person to ever do that?", I actually did a decent job in the end, all things considered.

Yes, an audience member is chosen to do the fire breathing segment.

I'm kidding. I don't remember there being any audience participation in the current incarnation of the luau.

But be sure to loudly applaud the fire guy. He looks irritated, like he thinks the audience doesn't appreciate how difficult his act is. He's holding sharp objects, so you don't want him too upset.

i totally forgot about the free alcohol lol...ok i'm in! granddaughter is 7 so it's not like i'm watching a toddler whose going to wander up to the fire guy while grandma gets tanked :ROFLOL: but a drink or two could make the evening much more...magical...yeah that's the word i'm looking for  i think i'm just reading to much into whats been said on the boards and the idea of 2 hours i freak a little...that's 120 mickey park minutes plus travel time lol.

i'm actually a disney addict so no matter what i'm sure we'll have a good time. she's sooooo super excited since of course no matter how many times we tell her, or i show her pics from her first wdw trip when we stayed at the poly, she thinks it's hawaii. i hope when she grows up she tells all her friends how her grandmother took her to hawaii just because she wanted to go lol.

You know what? It's the out door atmosphere and that you have been transported to Hawaii. It's a cool show. The food is so so. Our last time with the kids was horrible. Rain, no show, and crappy food, but we some how made it fun. Thats what its all about. When it's on, it' a lot of fun, and good too! I guess it's all about what you make of it. Here's our pics how we took a bad time and made it great!

lol she does love to dance, she even goes to zumba. i figure if the food is yucky they serve salad and we can eat a lot of salad or we can always make a food run later.

If nothing else, you can say you experienced this. We went years ago, kinda hokey, food was sub par, but the experience in itself, was kinda cool! We still have the monkey head carved out of a coconut!! LOL Someone asked us if the money was worth it, it is sort of pricey? But between the beautiful weather, the company at our table, and the fact we were at Disney, made it a fond memory :animwink:
