Spaceship Earth: Then and Now

They need to spend the cash on doing actual show scenes of a lest outdated future during the descent. The LCD screen stuff is nonsense.

The in-vehicle displays cost a lot more than a few plywood cut outs, a plastic sphere and some strands of fiber optic wire.

Great video, very interesting. Though I feel we always like to reminisce in the past I think change is good, at least they are trying to keep the ride updated. I'm still not happy with the speakers warning you your vehicle is turning around and the lcd displays showing your vehicle is turning (guess the lawyers had their way with this one and guest relations was tired of hearing complaints).

The warnings aren't reallty new. They've been around for as long as I can remember.

Oh, I know that. They have been around for ages. I just get annoyed by them. I was in Disney back in February 2011 for the first time in years and was reminded by how much little things like that take away from a great ride. Still just more of an annoyance than anything though.

indeed. The in vehicle tech and whole choose your future system is surprisingly complicated and very very clever. Just a shame it was a system looking for a showcase as opposed to a story needing a tool to tell the tale.

Pre-refurb, I would ride SSE several times a month. Post-refurb, it's lucky if I ride once every few months. I'm sure some people enjoy the new version, but, for me, it's a frustrating experience knowing what used to be there (but I guess I could say this about several attractions).

Spaceship Earth is still my favorite attraction at EPCOT, no doubt. Yes, I miss elements of the Irons version but I don't think the 2007 version is the abysmal failure so many claim it to be. The ascent looks better than it ever has with the new animatronics yet so many seem to completely ignore the improvements done to the first two-thirds of the show because it gets in the way of trashing the descent.

What's really frustrating is that they COULD use a separate narration for a more mature audience...heck they have what, 6 narrations now? (languages)

The story ends at the top since communication is hitting a dead end. Then you have a screen activity for the ride back into Rome. Unless you want a big display based on droid phones of the future there's nothing to show.

That honestly sums up a lot of the new tech at Disney... including a lot the next-gen show elements...

I've been on Spaceship Earth in 89, 96, 99, 2003, and 2012.

The version there now is really awesome in my opinion. I loved the seamless transitions into each scene. Especially the garage scene, with the car parked out front. Felt like I was there in each scene. Amazing.

The descent back to earth with the millions of lights hanging from the ceiling is a neat effect, and putting yourself into a cartoon was fun. :)

I had fun shouting "Thanks Phoenicians" when the narrator says to thank them. haha

I agree. I go on Spaceship Earth at least a few times per day any time I'm at Disney World and I couldn't tell you what the current score is, to be honest.

Funny that you mention this. I have been on the new version countless times, and I cant really imagine the current score. However, when I think of the Jeremy Irons version I can recall the beginning, and the descent score just like I heard it yesterday. The musical score of the Irons version was easily the best of any attraction at Disney no matter the time period.

I agree. The descent score in the Irons version was soaring and emotive. Speaking only for myself, it was a very memorable piece of music and perfectly underscored the scenes you saw and heard.

Admission: I hated the Cronkite narration and Tomorrows Child. I didn't want to ride it because of that stupid song. Jeremy Irons era was one word: Perfection.

The sad thing is, the descent that was planned for this latest refurb, as described to me once, would have been the best descent of all versions of SSE. Thanks a lot TDO.

The current refurb? Or was there another one?
