Space Mountain

Well what if you get there for only one day and feel nostalgic and want to ride the old Space Mountain but your stupid relatives want to break tradition and start out at Epcot instead which I like but not as much as the Magic Kingdom and we end up going to there instead and end up getting to Magic Kingdom later and miss the original space mountain and have to end up going to Rockit Mountain instead of the other one which is the one you wanted to go to.

Well, for one thing the updated Space Mountain at Disneyland is the same track layout, but feels all new due to new effects and soundtrack, so to be able to ride the "old" SM might not even be an option (depending on how you look at it).

I for one am very excited to see what all Rockit Mountain consists of when it debuts this spring. The whole subject of re-rideability is very important, especially in DL where MANY guests are locals who come to the park very often. I would venture to guess that if SM at WDW is ever updated it will also get Rockit Mountain attributes installed to at least have the option of using it down the road and have it as a marketing ploy like they did when they reprogrammed Tower.

Having seen the lighting effects at WDSP Rock`n`Roller, I can`t wait either.

For the unitiated, Paris RnRC has none of the black light props from MGM; instead it features the mother of all lighting rigs. Over a four hundred Vari*Lites, Jumbotrons, Strobes, LED fittings - you name it. It`s like a whole new ride - and each Limo triggers it`s own light show. Yep, each car has a lighting program, in sync to the audio in that particular car. And each one makes the ride again like a whole new attraction. The way the lights are used dosn`t brighten up the interior either.

Of the photos from the new DLC SM, you can make out the odd Vari*lite, and also the LED rings (again from Paris) that the car passes through. Looks very interesting; though I doubt they`d open it before Remember concludes it`s run; with crowd control being the nightmare it is and with the company actively discouraging guests to enter Disneyland after dark I`d be surprised if a whole new experience opened up for evening guests until Remember has finished.

I think I read somewhere that the soundtrack was speacily made for RM by Van Halan or fetures there music.
Some music by Van Halen was used for testing purposes earlier this year. It remains to be seen whether or not any of that will be in the final version.

I have a quick question...... Does Fed Ex still sponsor Space Mountain? When I was there in early December, I noticed that at the end of the ride, the scenes where missing the futuristic Fed Ex "space boxes", I saw no signage as I was leaving. With to small kids I never made it around to the main sign to see if Fed Ex was still there. Does anyone know?

I think they dropped the sponsorship.

Disney is also planning on using this principle when the rehab of DL's Pirates of the Caribbean happens...(I'm gunna say it) to create the rumored Pirates of the Scaribbean. Once again, if this approach works then we soon will get it too!

It is one of those things that you would have to be aware of when planning your trip. If it is that important for you to ride it as SM instead of RM then you should coordinate your day to make it work. At least it isn't as drastic as HMH were it is changed over for a period of months.
Noooo! But what if you didn't?

Disneyland's Space Mountain

Now if I remember correctly DL's Space Mountain had no choice but to be revamped. The track was rusting away. It was going to be unsafe if they left it that way.

They went ahead and updated the sound and lighting at the same time.
WDW's space mountain has nothing wrong with it except that it is 30 year old technology. No damage or anything like what happened to DL's track.

If you notice as I have, Space Mountain's line is always one fo the longest wait times. It seems it is just as popular as it has been.

I know many people that still are afraid of Space Mountain. hahahaha

Everest will be open the end of the month for passholders and March/April for all guests so if you want something more thrillers, there ya go.

That is correct about DL's Space Mt. being redone in part to structural problems. In fact, the ride was closed months earlier because the issues were a little worse than previously believed, but this didn't speed up the constuction process because plans were not set and crews were not lined up to work on the ride.

Before the redo, it was also one of the most popular rides at DL and continues to be. I think it is good of Disney to freshen up some of the rides to keep the guests excited and not let the rides become too dated. This is what they have done with Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion at DL as well.

There could definately be a redo of WDW's Space Mt. without making it more wild in terms of being an intense roller coaster. It would just add to the show and make what is there better (having it darker, adding a soundtrack, and just overall refreshed and cleaned up).

Considering WDW is the more popular of the two, it makes me wonder why DL gets all the refurb's. Will WDW eventually get all the same, or is it just DL doesn't have as much to offer as WDW and needs to freshen up old attractions to keep people coming back?

I wouldn't mind a big rehab like Disneyland's Space Mountain. Keep the queue tunnel effects and music, rehab everything else. New effects, Rockit Mountain, new track with same layout. I think it would be good for it's long term future.

It is a little of both. Space is an issue around Disneyland so redoing current attractions can be like adding a new attraction. Also, the 50th was a big reason for redoing some rides. A couple years ago there were apparently much larger plans to redo some of DL's main rides in honor of th 50th, but then was scaled back to what we have now. Redos and changes were also a way for the new management at DL to quickly fix things in the park and make their mark on the resort. WDW has already had some things done like DL with the redo of Small World and rumors abound with changes for Pirates and Jungle Cruise.

Ummm..."going to be" needs to read "was already". That ride came VERY close to hurting people. Seriously.
Just curious Lee, what would the timeframe be from when it closed to when it would have hurt people had it been left open (if that makes any sense at all).

I mean, there would have been an accident if the ride stayed open what, a week, 2 weeks, 2 months longer?

Just curious.

The way I heard it...there is a good reason it closed one night and never opened again. The ride was deemed too unsafe to continue running AT ALL after the night it closed. *cough*falling apart before their eyes*cough*
